Clash of the Titans --- Duke Vs. Kansas Preview

11/12/2013

Picture
CLASH OF THE TITANS

Duke (#4 AP, #4 USA Today) comes into the match against Kansas (#5 AP, #6 USA Today), following an incredible performance against Davidson where the Devils shot 70.4% from the floor and had four players with at least 20 points. A solid game by any standards but frankly Davidson has nowhere near the talent the  Blue Devils will see tomorrow night in Chacago's United Center at 10:00 p.m. (ESPN).

Meanwhile, the Jayhawks defeated Louisiana-Monroe at home by 17 points, led by super-freshman Andrew Wiggins who netted 16 in his inaugural college game. Sophomores Perry Ellis (6'8", 225lbs, PF) and Andrew White, III (6'6", 210, SG) each had 12 for Kansas, which had 10 players to score in the game for a balanced attack. Freshmen Frank Mason (5'11", 185, PG) and Wayne Selden (6'5", 230, SG) started the game along with Ellis, Wiggins, and standout transfer Tarik Black (6'9", 260, PF / C).

The spotlight will be on the freshmen, with Jabari Parker versus Andrew Wiggins taking center stage following a barrage of hype from ESPN, et als. The acclaim so far seems to be appropriate, however, as Parker was nearly flawless against Davidson, (8/10 FG's) and Wiggins showed some flair and serious confidence on the court leading a deeply talented Kansas team in scoring in his first collegiate game. Kansas also has another freshman with high potential in 7'0" center, Joel Embiid from Cameroon.

The Blue Devils will look to ride the momentum from the Davidson game and continue it on the Chicago Bulls homecourt (and also homecoming for Coach K, Parker, and new Assistant Jon Scheyer). Expect another fast paced game as, unlike Davidson, Kansas will be able to run with the Blue Devils and match Duke's athleticism. Both teams have great depth and can throw 10 legitimate players on the floor.

Kansas is traditionally a very efficient team, taking good shots and playing solid defense (Kansas was 9th in the nation in FG shooting % last year). Duke does have a slight advantage in overall experience as Kansas only has 3 upperclassmen on their team. This should help the Blue Devils a bit at tipoff when the entire college basketball world will have their eyes glued to this matchup.

There are a few different "Vegas" lines on the game currently. Some sites have the Blue Devils as 5 point favorites, while others have them as 3.5 point favorites. This game can be whittled down essentially to two main strengths in each team: 3-point shooting for the Blue Devils and post play / rebounding for the Jayhawks.

Duke has capable 3-point shooters all over the floor in Quinn Cook, Rasheed Sulaimon, Rodney Hood, Tyler Thornton, Jabari Parker, Matt Jones, Andre Dawkins, Matt Jones, and even Semi Ojeleye; as a team Duke ranked 6th in the nation last year in 3-point shooting percentage. Duke needs to hit their outside shots to beat the Jayhawks.

What the Jayhawks lack (by comparison) in 3-point shooting ability they make up for in the post. Tarik Black could be huge for the Jayhawks in this game. He already has a degree from Memphis in only 3 years and is using his last year of eligibility in Lawrence, Kansas, after heavily considering a Duke transfer. His intelligence, experience, and size could pose a problem for the Blue Devils down low. I can see Black drawing fouls from smaller Duke defenders (Jefferson, Hairston, Hood and even Parker). Further, his play could lead to Duke playing 7'0" freshman Marshall Plumlee  more, which would change their otherwise athletic pace. This would be a great game for Marshall to develop the Brian Zoubek ability of altering shots.

At the end of the day in this "Clash of Titans" and matchup of title hopefuls, I expect Duke's 3-point shooting ability and defense to win the day over a tenacious and well-balanced Kansas team. Look for freshmen on both teams to mature quickly under the bright lights of the United Center, and hopefully we'll see these two teams playing each other again in April.

            DUKE 84,  KANSAS 75.

Duke Vs. Davidson - Game Preview

11/8/2013

Picture
Chip Slate @chipslate
As Duke gears up for their home season opener against the Davidson Wildcats, one should stop for a minute and appreciate the rarity of seeing two coaches in the same game who've collectively spent more than 59 years with the schools they're coaching. Coach K now in his 34th year with the Blue Devils and Coach Bob McKillop in his 25th year as the coach of the Wildcats are legends in their own right. McKillop has put Davidson on the national stage with his consistently gritty and well coached teams. He shares the spotlight with Lefty Driesell in terms of legendary coaches to lead Davidson.

Davidson's consistently cerebral and scrappy teams remain the paramount reason Duke tends to schedule them on a regular basis. They are consistently well coached, tough minded, and play their hearts out on every possession. (not to mention they show up in the NCAA tournament with regularity) This will mark the third consecutive season the Blue Devils and Wildcats play each other in the regular season with Duke winning in 2011 at home by 13 points and then winning last season in a game played in the Charlotte Bobcats Arena by 17 points. Both of those Davidson teams made the NCAA tournament despite failing to get past the first round.

This year Duke opens the season at home against Davidson while coming off a respectable Elite Eight finish in last year's NCAA tournament. Duke loses their three top scorers from last season and their two top rebounders, all of which were seniors: Mason Plumlee, Seth Curry, and Ryan Kelly. Any other program losing that much talent would be disastrous but this is Duke where the Blue Devils tend to reload rather than rebuild. Arriving are super freshman forward Jabari Parker, forward Semi Ojeleye, and guard Matt Jones as well as transfer Rodney Hood who is ready to break out after having to sit out a year. Expect the starting five to include point guard Quinn Cook, Jabari Parker, Rodney Hood, Amile Jefferson, and most likely Rasheed Sulaimon, but expect guard Andre Dawkins to get plenty of minutes as well after taking last year off. Other key reserves include the Tenacious D-fender Tyler Thornton and Josh Hairston who was just this week named as the third captain along with Thornton and Hood.

Davidson likewise loses three starting seniors off last year's team in forward Jake Cohen, guard Nik Cochran, and guard J.P. Kuhlman. Returning for his senior year however is 6'7" forward De'mon Brooks who was 2nd on the team in scoring last year averaging 13.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while shooting 50% from the floor. Chris Czerapowicz, a 6'7" guard also returns as a starter from last year when he averaged 9.1 points and 5 rebounds per game and also led the team in three pointers made. Tyler Kalinoski a 6'4" junior guard returns as well and can also score from three-range. New additions to the team include three-star point guard Jack Gibbs (5'10") and center Andrew McAuliffe (6'8").

While Davidson is poised to win yet another Southern Conference title (before their move to the Atlantic 10 next year) expect them to have trouble with a more athletic and overall more talented Duke team. While De'mon Brooks remains an outstanding athlete he can only play one position at a time. Duke arguably has the most athletically deep team they've ever fielded. This should lead to a battle of game pace as Duke will look to speed up the tempo and run while Davidson will almost surely try to slow the Blue Devils down and play a half-court game. The size differential is minimal unless Duke employs Marshall Plumlee in the middle.

Ultimately, look for both teams to try and find chemistry with their newly assembled groups and look for Duke to take advantage of mismatches in transition. Hood and Parker both have the ability to score at will regardless of who's guarding them. Sulaimon has had a few twenty+ point game performances in the past himself and will be fighting to maintain his supposed starting spot. Amile Jefferson is poised to win the Mr. Clean-up Award for his ability to 'clean up' around the basket with 'garbage' points and steady rebounding.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are 'flat' periods for both teams as it is so early in the season and with having lost so many contributors from the year before. Davidson has the pieces to  hit occasional three's to keep them in the game early. Nonetheless, I expect Duke's superior athleticism and depth to suffocate the Davidson offense. Couple that with a raucous Cameron Crowd fired up for the potential of their team and you could have a powder keg that ends in a traditional Duke home-rout of a non-conference opponent and Duke's 102nd consecutive non-conference win at home (currently the longest such streak in the nation).

Vegas has Duke as a 16 point favorite but I believe the Blue Devils will come out running / gunning, cutting off passing lanes, and cover the spread going away:  DUKE  87,  DAVIDSON  64

Duke Vs. NCSU - Simulation Preview

11/7/2013

Picture
I've been using my NCAA Football Game (on Playstation 3) to simulate several football matchups and help me determine the best games to bet on. It's remarkable how accurate the available rosters are and I've made sure the depth charts are real and accurate as well. I thought it'd be an interesting 'experiment' to see how well the simulator does for the upcoming Duke games, so here's what the breakdown looks like for the coming home game at NC State.

After the stunning upset in Blacksburg, I've tweaked the rosters to more accurately reflect the current state of each team. (i.e. Duke's linebackers have been upgraded due to their performance this year)

As a result I feel we have the most accurate simulation to date. Duke began in Vegas as a nine point (-9) favorite but on one betting site it's already up to -10. 62% of all current public bets are on Duke to cover the spread.  I may be biased... OR AM I? Let the numbers decide:

1. 27-24

2. 38-35

3. 0-28     W

4. 10-17    W

5. 10-25    W

6. 14-29    W

7. 24-9

8. 31-24

9. 17-31    W

10. 21-17

11. 10-35    W

12. 7-30    W

13. 14-28    W

14. 24-31    W

15. 11-21    W

16. 24-21

17. 14-42    W

18. 15-23    W

19. 0-24    W

20. 7-27    W

According to the simulations Duke wins 14 out of 20 or a 70% Winning Percentage for the Blue Devils. And the average score is 16-27 or Duke -11. The simulations predict Duke to cover even the ten point spread with -11. Looking at the Mode we have: NCSU 10 or 24     to    Duke 24. The average yards for duke were as follows:  302 Passing Yards and 71 Rushing Yards.

It's clear the simulations believe that Boone will have no trouble throwing against the NCSU secondary. I've always thought the simulations didn't accurately reflect the realistic running yards for the Blue Devil's deep running backs. So I expect Duke to actually have at least 100ish running yards if not more.

Here's to hoping the simulations are on point this week and the wolfpack continue to 'rebuild.'

DUKE 27, NCSU 16

Alana Beard started her season in South Korea with the Shinhan Bank S-Birds.  With increasing financial instability affecting paycheck reliability around Europe, South Korea has become an attractive option for American basketball players.  The six teams in the league are all sponsored by corporations.  With a limit of two foreigners per team in the Women's Korean Basketball League, there is a higher number of foreign players that want to join the league than there are available spots.  Each team got to draft two players out of a pool of players that made themselves available for the league and Alana was one of the players selected.  The other player that the team picked was former Tennessee player Shekinna Stricklen.  In their first game of the season, they faced KDB Life Winnus and overcame an early deficit for an 89-78 win.  Alana had 16 points and 7 rebounds in 18 minutes.  Shekinna Stricklen had 14 points and 7 rebounds.  In the loss, ex-Tennessee player Kelley Cain had 25 points and 15 rebounds.
