Apologies, we had some problems with our upload for last week. Here are both weeks.

On Tuesday, Nolan Smith and Cedevita Zagreb hosted France's Elan Chalon as they tried to ensure their passage into the next round of the EuroCup.  While they could have done so by not losing by too big of a margin, they went ahead and completed a fourth quarter comeback to win outright 75-71, leaving them just waiting on other results to determine their three opponents in the next group.  Nolan had 18 points and 8 rebounds in 33 minutes to lead his team.  Goran Suton added 12 points and 7 rebounds.  Ex-Western Kentucky player A.J. Slaughter had 19 points in the loss.

Even though they are not covered here in depth, every so often I like to provide brief updates on players who started at Duke before playing for other schools.  Chelsea Hopkins is having a good first overseas season in Israel with Bont Hertzeliya.  Eric Boateng is playing in Argentina for La Union Formosa.  Jamal Boykin just made his debut in Ukraine for Cherkasy.  Earlier in the season, he was signed on a short term deal as an injury replacement for Wurzburg in Germany.

Duke Vs. Gardner Webb Preview

12/15/2013

Picture
After a nearly two week break for exams, the Blue Devils (7-2, 0-0) host the occasionally pesky Gardner-Webb Running Bulldogs (6-5, 0-0) in Cameron Indoor Stadium (Monday, December 16th, ESPNU, 7 p.m.). Some may remember the Bulldogs upsetting Kentucky in Rupp Arena by 16 points, although that was six years ago now. Duke's last meeting with the Bulldogs came in 2009 exactly four years ago today when the Blue Devils won easily at home by 45 points.

This year's Bulldogs are an experienced team but were picked in the preseason to finish in the middle of the Big South Conference by most talking heads. They lost their head coach, Chris Holtmann (also last year's Big South Conference Coach of the Year) who accepted a job on Brandon Miller's staff at Butler.

The Bulldogs are led by 6'5" senior shooting guard, Naji Hibbert, 6'7" junior forward, Donta Harper, and 5'10" junior point guard, Tyler Strange. Hibbert and Harper both average more than 12 points per game and Strange is second in the Big South Conference in assists at 6.1 per game. The Bulldogs also feature a 6'10" senior center in Mike Byron but he's only playing around 17 minutes per game. The Bulldogs only have a handful of players who will even attempt three-pointers: Hibbert and Strange from the starters and reserves Ivey and Castellanos, all shooting in the 30%-37% range.

Essentially with the loss of their coach, the Bulldogs are seeking a new identity with their players. As is common with Gardner-Webb in the past, their non-conference schedule has been fairly challenging for a mid-major squad. They've already played (and lost) to Xavier and Missouri both on the road and also lost to Chris Collins' Northwestern team. So far their most impressive win has been an overtime win on a neutral floor over Morehead State.

Enter the Blue Devils coming off their best win of the season over previously #22 Michigan in a win Coach K referred to as "an outstanding defensive game." After two weeks of exams and practice expect the Blue Devils to come out amped to play. It will also be interesting to see how much, if any, Rasheed Sulaimon plays. He didn't play any against Michigan as the Duke coaches were not pleased with his preparation in practice and before games. Likewise, this will be the first game since reserve Alex Murphy announced he was transferring.

Some may look at this game and think that another near-disaster like the Vermont game is possible but I don't see that here. Vermont while also an experienced team laden with upper-classmen was predicted to win their conference while Gardner-Webb doesn't have nearly the same backing. Also, Duke has played a vigorous schedule thus far and is finally learning how to play together both offensively and defensively.

Look for the Blue Devils to run away with this one. While there may be some rust after two weeks without a game, I expect Duke's talent inside and out to turn this game into a blowout early. The focus then will be on them finishing the game and closing the other team out. (See issues with ECU, Vermont) Unlike other teams Gardner-Webb doesn't have the 3-point firepower to climb back if they find themselves in an early hole. While Vegas hasn't released a line on this game, I'd expect it to be at least 20 and most likely more.

Duke Vs FSU -- ACC Championship Game Preview From a PS3

12/6/2013

Picture

Duke enters Saturday night's ACC Championship Game a 29 point Vegas underdog, which suits the Devils just fine. They were picked to finish towards the bottom of the Coastal Division by all the big media outlets yet here they are with a school record 10 wins and riding an 8 game winning streak. Their quarterback is undefeated as a starter and in true Vegas fashion, the Blue Devils are playing with house money.

Game time conditions look to be around 50 degrees by the 8pm kickoff with light rain and a slight breeze. My simulations included those conditions and even the Bank of America stadium setting. Here are the numbers:

DUKE  -  FSU
1.  13 - 38

2.  21 - 42

3.  49 - 21  (W)

4.  24 - 14  (W)

5.  7  -  33

6.  30 - 42

7.  23 - 37

8.  14 - 24

9.  28 - 44

10. 24 - 23  (W)

11. 42 - 35  (W)

12. 20 - 21

13. 37 - 34  (W)

14. 28 - 14  (W) 15. 17 - 30 16. 31 - 17  (W) 17. 14 - 44  18. 17 - 28 19. 22 - 24 20. 18 - 15  (W)

The numbers show Duke has a 40% chance to win this game winning 8 of the 20 simulations. The average score was a tantalizing 24-29 in favor of the Seminoles.. The simulations showed a balanced Duke attack in the wins with roughly 110 yards rushing and 285 yards passing. The Mode (which has been fairly accurate in the past) is Duke: 28 or 24 to FSU: 24 or 14.
The computer believes this game will be much closer than the talking media heads believe. They continue to be caught up in the irrelevant past, i.e. Duke has never defeated FSU. What matters is THIS year and this Duke team which has done nothing but prove everyone wrong all season long. They'll hope to 'shock the world' on Saturday but I guarantee you Cutcliffe's crew EXPECTS to win this game. LET'S GO DUKE!
DUKE 24,  FSU 29
