Duke Vs FSU -- ACC Championship Game Preview From a PS3

12/6/2013

Picture

Duke enters Saturday night's ACC Championship Game a 29 point Vegas underdog, which suits the Devils just fine. They were picked to finish towards the bottom of the Coastal Division by all the big media outlets yet here they are with a school record 10 wins and riding an 8 game winning streak. Their quarterback is undefeated as a starter and in true Vegas fashion, the Blue Devils are playing with house money.

Game time conditions look to be around 50 degrees by the 8pm kickoff with light rain and a slight breeze. My simulations included those conditions and even the Bank of America stadium setting. Here are the numbers:

DUKE  -  FSU
1.  13 - 38

2.  21 - 42

3.  49 - 21  (W)

4.  24 - 14  (W)

5.  7  -  33

6.  30 - 42

7.  23 - 37

8.  14 - 24

9.  28 - 44

10. 24 - 23  (W)

11. 42 - 35  (W)

12. 20 - 21

13. 37 - 34  (W)

14. 28 - 14  (W) 15. 17 - 30 16. 31 - 17  (W) 17. 14 - 44  18. 17 - 28 19. 22 - 24 20. 18 - 15  (W)

The numbers show Duke has a 40% chance to win this game winning 8 of the 20 simulations. The average score was a tantalizing 24-29 in favor of the Seminoles.. The simulations showed a balanced Duke attack in the wins with roughly 110 yards rushing and 285 yards passing. The Mode (which has been fairly accurate in the past) is Duke: 28 or 24 to FSU: 24 or 14.
The computer believes this game will be much closer than the talking media heads believe. They continue to be caught up in the irrelevant past, i.e. Duke has never defeated FSU. What matters is THIS year and this Duke team which has done nothing but prove everyone wrong all season long. They'll hope to 'shock the world' on Saturday but I guarantee you Cutcliffe's crew EXPECTS to win this game. LET'S GO DUKE!
DUKE 24,  FSU 29

Duke Vs. Alabama Preview

11/27/2013

Picture
The Blue Devils come into the next round of the Pre-season NIT tournament in Madison Square Garden off the heels of a dreadful performance against the Vermont Catamounts. Duke barely escaped by one point and were beyond fortunate to come out of that game with a win. Their performance led Coach K to proclaim his team, “didn’t respect the game of basketball” and you can expect those comments to stick with this young team.

You’d expect Duke to address their awful defensive effort against Vermont in practice but there’s been very little time to address those concerns as the team used Monday to travel to Madison Square Garden. MSG has been kind to Duke in the past and remains the site where Coach K became the all-time winningest Division I men’s basketball coach in 2011 with a win over Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans.

Duke will face a 3-1 Alabama Crimson Tide team led by former Duke spoiler, Anthony Grant. In 2007’s NCAA tournament, Grant led his VCU team to an upset of 6th seeded Duke in the first round. Don’t think either coach has forgotten this. Alabama’s wins have come over Texas Tech, Stillman, and Georgia State all at home, while losing to respectable Oklahoma on a neutral floor.

The Crimson Tide are led by 6 foot senior point guard Trevor Releford who is averaging 18 points per game this season and looking for his second All-SEC and All-Defensive team selection. He’s joined in the backcourt by 6’ 1” inch sophomore shooting guard, Retin Obasohan who is currently second on the team in scoring at 15.5 ppg. Guards essentially dominate this team which follows along Grant’s traditional coaching recipe. The Crimson Tide has a few big bodies with both Shannon Hale and Nick Jacobs checking in at 6’ 8” , freshman Jimmie Taylor at 6’ 10”, and Carl Engstrom at 7’1”. The big bodies however aren’t getting a lot of playing time with Jacobs getting most of the minutes between the big men at 20 minutes per game this season.

The Blue Devils have had no problems with offense this year averaging 93 ppg so far led by an incredibly talented tandem of Rodney Hood (21.8 ppg, 5.2 rpg) and super-freshman Jabari Parker (23 ppg, 8.8 rpg). Quinn Cook has shown an outstanding ability of finding his teammates averaging 7.2 assists per game and some clutch shooting / drive-scoring at 12.8 ppg. Nonetheless, expect defense to be the focus of the Blue Devils against the Crimson Tide.

This game should be interesting given the games Duke has already played this season. Teams have figured out how to play the Blue Devils so far as Duke’s struggles (at home) against East Carolina and Vermont have shown. Will Alabama follow the same blue print and will these previous games give the Crimson Tide added confidence against the #6 ranked Blue Devils in the spotlight of Madison Square Garden?

Expect to see some small lineup changes as Coach K will be searching for guys who are willing to play all out on defense. Andre Dawkins in particular looks like he’s evolved his defense from past years and has become pesky on the perimeter which will be necessary for the guard dominated Crimson Tide.

I think Duke’s recent struggles come to an end tonight and their experience in the spotlight of high-end neutral courts will lead them to a dominant victory against a team that Duke matches up with very well.

Route To Rio Part 1: Introduction to Spain 2014

11/21/2013

Picture
This is the first in a series of articles that will follow Coach K on his quest for a third straight Olympic gold medal.  Even with the tournament nearly three years away, there are lots of pieces in motion right now that will determine what the USA Men's National Team will be doing in the next three summers to prepare.  This past summer, most of the national teams around the world were hard at work for long periods of time.  That is because teams were playing in their continental championships to fight for a spot in next summer's FIBA Basketball World Cup.  As the reigning Olympic champions, the Americans were able to turn down a berth to the FIBA Americas tournament and let the star players take a rest knowing that qualification for 2014 has already been earned.  Instead, USA Basketball was able to put on a brief training camp for younger players looking to establish their presence on a national team level, hoping to find some players that can supplement the more veteran players who have already declared their interest in playing for the national team next summer and beyond.

Next year's FIBA Basketball World Cup will be an important test for Team USA, not only to defend their crown, but to try to win that automatic bid to the Olympics.  This will allow the team to have relatively little activity in the summer of 2015 to keep themselves rested for Brazil.  Given that one slip-up in the wrong place can mean an extra summer of competition for the team, the other 23 teams in the tournament will provide a test for the United States.  Spain, which has played Team USA tough in recent years even though they eventually lost, will be looking to put on a show for their home fans.  With a number of key players in their prime and several more towards the end of their international careers, expect them to be the biggest threat.  Besides Spain and the United States, 18 other teams have already qualified for next summer by virtue of their performance in their continental championships.  4 more teams will be chosen from a pool of wild card applicants to fill out the field.

With the United States not participating in the FIBA Americas tournament in Venezuela, it was wide open for the other teams to finish in the top four places to qualify.  Mexico ended up being the surprise tournament winners over Puerto Rico with Argentina and the Dominican Republic joining them and the Americans next summer.  In Europe, Spain still participated in the Eurobasket tournament held in Slovenia, even with their spot secure next summer as hosts.  The top six finishers besides Spain were going to qualify and France beat Lithuania to win the title with Croatia, Slovenia, and surprise team Ukraine joining them as Serbia managed to win the final spot.  In Asia, Iran won the tournament, beating the home team, the Philippines, in the final.  The hosts also won a spot for next summer, marking a big return to the world stage for one of the most basketball-mad countries in the world, and South Korea also qualified with a third place finish.  The African tournament was held in Ivory Coast as traditional powers Angola beat another surprising team, Egypt, to win it all as Senegal also joined the other two teams with a spot next summer by finishing in third place.  Australia and New Zealand automatically qualified by virtue of being the only two countries in the Oceania region to field teams, but they did still contest their continental championship as Australia prevailed in the two game home and home series.

With some big names not making out of their continental qualifiers, a total of 15 teams have applied to grab 4 open spots.  Here are the teams by region with their current world ranking:

Nigeria (18)

Brazil (10)
Canada (25)
Venezuela (28)

China (12)

Qatar (42)

Bosnia and Herzegovina (57)

Finland (39)
Germany (14)

Greece (5)
Israel (37)
Italy (21)

Poland (40)

Russia (6)
Turkey (7)

There are a number of strong contenders with the rule that not all of the teams can be from the same continent.  With a number of factors being used to consider teams, team strength is not the only consideration.  These teams will be cut down in the next week before the final picks are made next year.  At that point, it will become more clear how the path will shape up for the United States as they look to defend their world championship crown and become the second team to punch their ticket for the next Olympics.
