Route to Rio 9: Filling Up the Field

The United States qualified for the upcoming Olympics last summer with 8 more teams joining them after this summer.  The 5 continental federations had their qualifying tournaments, but FIBA made some important announcements before those even started.  First, Brazil was allowed to take its place in the field as the host country after meeting certain conditions.  The other announcement was the expansion of the final qualifying tournament in 2016 from 12 teams to 18 teams with an accompanying change in format.  Instead of 1 country hosting all of the teams with the top 3 teams advancing, there will be 3 separate tournaments with each winner advancing.  3 of the new spots were directly allocated to the continental federations as Europe got 1 more team to bump its total to 5 teams and Africa and Asia each got another team to join the Americas with 3 teams each.  Oceania retains its sole spot.  The other 3 spots are reserved for hosts.  In the past, only teams who had already earned spots in the tournament were in contention to host.  That has changed as all teams who failed to qualify from the Olympics via the continental competitions can apply.  If a team that already earned a spot in the qualifying tournament is also selected to host, their continental federation will be able to send an additional team to the tournament.

The first federation to conduct its championship was FIBA Oceania.  With only Australia and New Zealand participating, the tournament was held in a two game format with each team hosting a game and the scores of both games being combined to determine the winner.  As expected Australia's greater star power and depth helped them win the first game at home 71-59.  They then sealed the lone Olympic berth up for grabs by also winning the second game outright 89-79 to win 160-38 overall.  New Zealand then had to settle for trying to qualify next summer.

Next, FIBA Africa conducted Afrobasket 2015 in Tunisia.  16 teams competed knowing that only the winner would be able to claim a spot next summer.  The tournament uses a unique format, not eliminating any teams after the first round robin stage which splits the teams into 4 groups of 4.  All the teams participated in the knockout round, which always creates unpredictability as another last place team was able to eliminate a group winner.  The quarterfinals were the key round as a win there was necessary to at least make it to the final qualifying tournament.  The hosts actually had the closest game, beating Mali.  Nigeria, Angola, and Senegal beat Gabon, Egypt, and Algeria by more decisive margins.  In the semifinals, Nigeria needed overtime to beat Senegal and Angola eliminated the hosts.  In the end, it was Nigeria winning the final 74-65, bringing them back to the Olympics.

FIBA Americas held its championship in Mexico City, after Mexico's original choice at Monterrey fell through.  10 teams arrived with 9 hopefuls fighting for 2 automatic berths after Brazil received their berth as hosts.  The first stage was 2 round robin groups of 5 teams, which eliminated 2 teams, Brazil and Cuba.  The remaining teams played 4 more games and tossed out previous results against eliminated teams to create a new giant round robin.  The Dominican Republic, Panama, and Uruguay were at the bottom of the standings at the end of this round, taking away hopes of another chance next summer.  Puerto Rico finished 5th, giving them another shot at qualification.  The semifinal winners would take the automatic spots and Venezuela took one by stunning Canada 79-78.  Mexico had used the energy of the home crowd to have a strong tournament, but Argentina's veterans pushed them over the finish line 78-70.  Both teams had already qualified, but they still had a trophy to play for as Venezuela competed a 2nd consecutive upset 76-71 to win their 1st title.

Eurobasket was the most anticipated tournament, with 24 teams battling for only 2 automatic spots at the Olympics.  The original plans to hold the tournament in Ukraine were scrapped last year and there was not enough time to arrange a single host, so 4 different countries hosted parts of the tournament.  France, which was awarded hosting for the knockout round, also hosted Group A at Montpellier.  They along with Israel, Poland, and Finland moved on as Russia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were eliminated.  Group B was held in Berlin, Germany and Serbia took the top spot, moving along with Spain, Italy, and Turkey, eliminating the hosts and Iceland.  Group C was in Zagreb, Croatia, but Greece was able to finish first with the hosts, Slovenia, and Georgia also advancing at the expense of Macedonia and the Netherlands.  Group D action took place in Riga, Latvia where the hosts moved on right behind Lithuania, with the Czech Republic and Belgium moving on as well while Estonia fell short and Ukraine suffered another setback.  From there, the remaining 16 teams descended on Lille.  In the all-important semifinals, Spain beat France 80-75 in overtime and Lithuania beat Serbia 67-64 to complete a set of thrilling games for the two automatic spots.  Spain then beat Lithuania, 80-63 to also win the championship.  The losers at the quarterfinal stage knew that three of them would definitely also have a chance next summer.  Greece beat Latvia 97-90 and Italy beat the Czech Republic 85-70 to grabs their spots in the final qualifying tournament.  The Czech Republic beat Latvia 97-70 to take the last spot.

The final tournament was the FIBA Asia Championship, held in Changsha, China.  16 teams arrived knowing that only winning it all would be enough to ensure a spot in the Olympics.  The teams started in 4 groups, with only 1 team in each group getting eliminated.  Those turned out to be Malaysia in A, Kuwait in B, Singapore in C, and Taiwan in D.  The remaining teams in Groups A and B combined to form Group E while the teams from Groups C and D formed Group F.  Each team played 3 games with the teams they had not played yet and after tossing out results against eliminated teams, completed a new round robin.  Palestine, Hong Kong, Jordan, and Kazakhstan exited at this stage, leaving 8 teams for the quarterfinals.  The quarterfinals were important because wins meant that the team would at worst have another shot at qualifying next summer.  Iran started by beating South Korea 75-62.  Japan beat Qatar 81-67 and then China eased past India 104-58.  The Philippines closed out the day by beating Lebanon 82-70.  China won one semifinal and the Philippines the other, setting up a showdown for the continent's lone automatic berth.  It was China in the end winning in front of the home crowd 78-67 to complete the Olympic picture for this year.

After the results, countries began to contemplate applying to be hosts either to increase their chances to qualify with a home court advantage or to just get back into the qualifying game if they were not among the 15 teams to get spots with their on court results.  9 teams now know that they can plan for next summer and the ultimate international basketball prize.

Chelsea's teammates include ex-Oklahoma player Ashley Paris, ex-Robert Morris player Artemis Spanou, and rookie Tay'ler Mingo from Florida State.  Tricia's teammates include ex-USC player Jacki Gemelos who was also delayed by the WNBA playoffs, ex-Florida State player Leonor Rodriguez, ex-Hofstra player Vanessa Gidden, ex-Drexel player Gabriela Marginean, ex-UTEP player Kristine Vitola, and ex-WNBA player Astou Ndour.  In this game, Uni Girona trailed for most of the game, but Chelsea led them back as they held on to a 61-59 win.  Chelsea had 14 points in 30 minutes as she was awarded the MVP trophy.  Spanou added 10 points and 8 rebounds.  In the loss, Gidden had 16 points and 8 rebounds, Ndour had 14 points and 9 rebounds, and Marginean had 10 points.

On Friday, Haley Peters started her season in Spain.  After a strong season in the league last year, Haley found herself with an offer from a better team, joining Conquero based in Huelva.  Her teammates include ex-Texas A&M player Adaora Elonu and ex-Cal player Talia Caldwell.  The WNBA playoffs prevented another matchup of former classmates as their first game was against Tricia Liston's Avenida.  Tricia and Jacki Gemelos were missing again for Avenida with Elonu away from Conquero to play for the Nigerian national team in their quest for the Olympics.  Haley led her team to victory, pouring in 25 points and adding 6 rebounds in 37 minutes.  Caldwell added 10 points.  Gabriela Marginean had 13 points in the loss.

On Saturday, Shay Selby missed the start of her season in Germany due to injury.  After a return to professional basketball late last season, Shay impressed teams and ended up signing with Osnabruck, which was just promoted to the top division after winning their region of the second division last season.  Her teammates include recently arriving ex-Michigan State player Jasmine Thomas, rookie Katelyn McDaniel from San Diego, ex-Arkansas player Skye Rees, and injured ex-Auburn player Chantel Hilliard.  Ex-IPFW player Juliane Hohne was going to play, but will probably only be the head coach.  Their opener against Avides was expected to be tough with all of the player absences, but they put up a good fight before losing 72-70.  In the win, ex-Texas Tech player Kierra Mallard had 15 points and 10 rebounds and former Wisconsin-Milwaukee player Angela Rodriguez had 10 points.

Mistie Bass was still in the middle of the WNBA playoffs, so she did not make it to France in time for the start of the season.  It will be the second season for her with Lattes Montpellier as she continues her overseas career in France.  The team returns a number of familiar faces, including WNBA player Jenna O'Hea, who also did not make it to this game, Valeriane Ayayi who just finished her first WNBA season, and ex-UC Irvine player Naomi Halman.  On the opening weekend, instead of starting the regular season, the team played in the Match of Champions against defending league winners Bourges.  Both teams were a little short of their full rosters, but it was a close game throughout as they fell just short 63-60.  Halman had 11 points.  In the win, ex-Nebraska player Danielle Page had 18 points and 13 rebounds and ex-Maryland player Diandra Tchatchouang had 12 points.

Route to Rio Part 8: A Busy 2015

8/11/2015

The United States already qualified for the 2016 Olympics by winning last summer's World Championships.  While that left the team with a mostly free summer, teams around the globe are busy trying to grab the other spots in next summer's tournament.  Each continental federation is holding its championships, which will provide some of the automatic entrants into the tournament, while the teams that just miss out on those berths will have one final chance next summer before the Olympics to qualify.  The teams are having a gathering in Las Vegas this summer with meetings and some practices leading to one intrasquad scrimmage.  Not all of the players who accepted invitations are participating in all phases of the minicamp, leaving some room for some new players to impress the coaching staff.

The first continent that will complete its qualifiers is Oceania.  Only two countries have senior national teams, so instead of a tournament in a single location, Australia and New Zealand each get to host a game with the score combined across both games to determine the winner.  The champion will qualify automatically for the Olympics with the loser getting another shot next year.

AfroBasket will be held in Tunis and Nabeul in Tunisia as only the winner will be automatically entered into the Olympics and two more teams getting a chance to play next summer for the final spot.  The sixteen teams are broken up into four groups, with the final group standings determining the placement of the teams into the knockout bracket, leaving the exciting possibility of another team catching fire in the elimination games after struggling in the group stages again.  The hosts along with the Central African Republic, Nigeria, and Uganda are in Group A.  Group B includes Angola, Morocco, Mozambique, and Senegal.  Group C has Cameroon, Egypt, Gabon, and Mali.  Group D has Algeria, Cape Verde, the Ivory Coast, and Zimbabwe.

The championship of the Americas was originally slated to be held in Monterrey, Mexico but will instead be held in Mexico City.  At the start of the summer, it was not clear whether Brazil would receive an automatic berth as the host country due to lingering financial issues, but they were just cleared to claim their spots in both the Men's and Women's tournament, reducing the competition in this tournament although they are still fielding a team.  The first stage of the competition has the ten teams broken into two groups for round robin play.  Group A features Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama, and Uruguay.  Group B includes Argentina, Canada, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela.  The bottom team in each group is eliminated and the remaining teams play four games against the qualifying teams from the other group, combining those results with the three games against the qualifiers from their own group to form an eight team round robin.  Only the top four teams after that stage have a chance at automatic Olympic qualification with the winners of the two semifinals grabbing those berths.  The two losing semifinalists and the fifth place team by round robin standings will get one more chance next summer.

Eurobasket was supposed to be held in Ukraine, but the ongoing conflict there forced a change.  The scope of the tournament made it impractical to be played in one country on such short notice, so it will be spread out.  France hosts Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, Israel, Poland, and Russia in Group A.  Germany hosts Iceland, Italy, Serbia, Spain, and Turkey in Group B.  Croatia hosts Georgia, Greece, Macedonia, the Netherlands, and Slovenia in Group C.  Latvia hosts Belgium, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, and Ukraine in Group D.  The top four teams in each group move on to the next round, which will be a knockout competition held in France.  The two finalists will also qualify for the Olympics with four spots up for grabs in the last chance tournament next summer.

The final continental competition will be in Asia as teams head to Changsha, China to win the tournament and grab the continent's only automatic Olympic bid with the next two teams getting another chance next summer.  The sixteen teams will be divided into four groups with the top three teams in each group moving on to the next stage.  Groups A and B will combine their teams into Group E and Groups C and D will combine their teams into Group F.  The results against the other two qualifying teams in the first stage carry on to this round, where each team plays the three qualifiers from the other group to form a six team round robin.  From there, four teams from each group qualify for the knockout stage.  Group A includes India, Iran, Japan, and Malaysia.  Group B has Kuwait, Palestine, the Philippines, and an additional team from the East Asian section of the federation.  Group C consists of the hosts, Jordan, Singapore, and South Korea.  Group D will be contested by Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Qatar, and Taiwan.

A couple former members of Duke's women's team who finished their careers at other schools also had overseas seasons finish earlier in the year.

Chelsea Hopkins returned to Israel for another season, joining Bnot Herzliya again.  She once again proved to be one of the top point guards in the league, setting up her teammates while also finding her own scoring touch and leading them to strong performances in both the cup and league, reaching the semifinals before having their season ended.  Her work led to another WNBA training camp invite, although she failed to make a team this year as well.  As she continues to reach that goal, it is clear that she has established a solid reputation in Israel that can carry her there or elsewhere in Europe as her career continues.
