Duke Basketball Overseas -- part 56 of a season long series

On Monday, Marty Pocius and Zalgiris Kaunas needed a win to keep themselves in championship contention and took care of business at home to beat Lietuvos Rytas 72-57 in Game 2.  Marty had 16 points in 31 minutes.  Justin Dentmon had 18 points and 8 rebounds and Robertas Javtokas had 18 points and 7 rebounds.  In the loss, ex-Louisville player Juan Palacios had 20 points and 7 rebounds.

On Tuesday, DeMarcus Nelson and Red Star Belgrade eased past their farm team FMP 87-65.  DeMarcus had 8 points in 21 minutes.

Nolan Smith only made a brief cameo due to lingering injuries as Cedevita Zagreb pounded Alkar 106-63.

Daniel Ewing and Paris-Levallois started their playoffs with Game 1 of the quarterfinals at Nancy, with a late comeback attempt falling short in a 70-61 loss to put the team at risk of elimination in the next game.  Daniel had 8 points in 21 minutes.  Elton Brown had 13 points and Blake Schilb had 12 points.  In the win, ex-Wichita State player Clevin Hannah had 26 points and 6 rebounds, ex-Syracuse player Paul Harris had 18 points, and ex-DII player Nicholas Pope had 10 points.

On Wednesday, Marty Pocius and Zalgiris Kaunas played the deciding Game 3 of the semifinals against Lietuvos Rytas.  The game was close throughout before they showed their championship mettle and did just enough in the second half to win 73-71.  Marty had 11 points in 28 minutes.  Justin Dentmon had 14 points and Robertas Javtokas had 10 points.  In the loss, ex-Texas A&M player Antanas Kavaliauskas had 17 points and 6 rebounds, and ex-Wake Forest player Darius Songaila had 15 points and 6 rebounds.

On Thursday, Daniel Ewing and Paris-Levallois kept their season alive by taking control of Game 2 in the quarterfinals against Nancy and winning 97-75.  Daniel had 11 points and 7 assists in 17 minutes.  In the loss, Clevin Hannah had 16 points and Paul Harris had 12 points.

On Friday, Kathleen Scheer and the Hobart Chargers lost their momentum in the second half against the Brisbane Spartans and lost 75-64.  Kathleen had 19 points and 16 rebounds in 36 minutes before fouling out.  In the win, ex-Southeast Missouri State player Natalie Taylor had 12 points and 8 rebounds.

On Saturday, Daniel Ewing and Paris-Levallois had their season ended with a 90-73 loss at Nancy in Game 3.  Daniel led his team with 22 points in 36 minutes.  Blake Schilb had 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists, and Elton Brown had 12 points.  In the win, Paul Harris had 22 points and 11 rebounds, ex-DII player Austin Nichols had 20 points, and ex-UNLV player Marcus Banks had 18 points and 7 assists.  While Daniel had a solid season, he did have to deal with the suspension from an on-court altercation, and the team did not get as far in the playoffs as they had hoped, dealing with suspensions and injuries.

Kathleen Scheer and the Hobart Chargers had a quick turnaround and recovered to beat the Canberra Capitals 71-56.  Kathleen led all players with 32 points and 14 rebounds in 38 minutes.  Klara Wischer had 18 points and 8 rebounds and Izzy Chilcott had 10 points and 10 rebounds.  In the loss, rookie Caitlin Rowe from South Florida had 18 points and 8 rebounds.

On Sunday, Nolan Smith was held out as Cedevita Zagreb expected to be able to beat Sibenik, but ended up being tested as they held on to a 91-87 win.  Tomislav Zubcic had 17 points.
