Duke Basketball Overseas - 4/14/2015

4/14/2015

On Wednesday, Tricia Liston and Cagliari tried to keep their season alive, but fell 74-62 at home in the second game of the quarterfinals against Schio.  Tricia led all scorers with 16 points in 33 minutes.  Lauma Reke added 15 points and 8 rebounds.  In the win, ex-South Carolina player Iva Sliskovic and ex-WNBA player Raffaella Masciadri had 10 points each.  Tricia completes her first season overseas with possibly the strongest individual season in Italy, willing her team to the last spot in the playoffs to improve on their performance from their last season despite a flurry of midseason roster issues.

Shay Selby and Binnenland looked to take command of the semifinals with the chance to win the series if they could defend their homecourt, but gave the advantage back to the Loon Lions and put themselves on the brink of elimination after losing 57-53.  Shay had 6 points and 8 rebounds in 37 minutes.  In the win, ex-Southern Illinois player Molly McDowell had 21 points and 7 rebounds.

On Thursday, DeMarcus Nelson and Panathinaikos looked to advance to the EuroLeague quarterfinals as they took a trip to Serbia to face his former team Red Star Belgrade.  As it turned out, an earlier game in Germany already sealed their spot in the playoffs, but they did fight hard for the win before losing 69-68.  DeMarcus had 8 points in 18 minutes before fouling out.  Esteban Batista had 15 points and 6 rebounds.  In the win, ex-UConn player Marcus Williams had 11 points and 7 assists.

On Friday, Marty Pocius and Galatasaray finished up their EuroLeague campaign at home against Spain's FC Barcelona and put in a decent effort for a while before losing 88-65.  Marty had 6 points in 30 minutes.  In the win, Ante Tomic, the 44th pick of the Utah Jazz in 2008, had 20 points and Tibor Pleiss, the 31st pick of the New Jersey Nets in 2010 before three trades left his rights with the Utah Jazz, had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Kathleen Scheer and the Hobart Chargers started their season by edging out the Sandringham Sabres 76-73.  This year marks the third for Kathleen on the island of Tasmania where the team competes in the regionally based SEABL, one of several State Leagues that run during the offseason of Australia's national league.  Last season the team made the final before losing as Kathleen scored more points than any other player in the league.  With many of the players locally based, the team roster does not change that much each season as it now has three former San Diego players with returnees Izzy Chilcott and Klara Wischer and newcomer Amy Kame, who has not reported to the team yet after just finishing her European season.  In this game, Kathleen quickly showed her scoring touch by leading all scorers with 28 points and added 15 rebounds as she played all 40 minutes.  Chilcott had 20 points and Wischer had 10 points and 10 rebounds.  In the loss, Brittany Smart, who played for NAIA turned DII school Cedarville, had 26 points and 14 rebounds.

Shay Selby and Binnenland could not extend their season after a 68-52 Game 4 loss to the Loon Lions.  Shay had 19 points and 6 rebounds in 38 minutes.  In the win, Molly McDowell had 10 points.  After more than a full season's absence, Shay returned to professional play for a team that desperately needed the short term help.  She provided an immediate spark for them, although they were not able to replicate their team success from the previous season.  Still, Shay did help win the Dutch Cup and has re-established her professional credentials for her career.
