I would think since it is the player's mother, not the player, it would be OK...but then again it IS the NCAA. Hope you hear back, I will contribute.CathyCA wrote:Under a strict interpretation of the rules, I think it could be construed as a violation. Many thanks to my esteemed colleague, Madame Lawgrad Commonwealth for raising the initial question.

Here is the email I got back from Todd Mesibov in Duke's Compliance Office:
Hi Ms. Thompson,
Thank you very much for checking in with us. You gut reaction is correct, fans are not permitted to provide direct benefits (meals, money, and other tangible benefits) to a student-athlete or his family, even in extraordinary circumstances like this. For situations like Brandon’s, the NCAA does allow us (Duke) to help with meals and other expenses that are not normally permissible, and we are doing our best to make this difficult time a little easier for Brandon and his family. We are looking into additional ways to help, and if there is an opportunity for our fans to provide any assistance, we will be sure to let you know as part of our efforts to get the word out.
Thank you again both for your desire to help Brandon’s family and for checking in to ask if the assistance is permissible. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

This fuckin' ridiculous. The NCAA needs to get their head out of their ass. I understand why there are rules, but meals, really? Especially for an extraordinary situation like this.CathyCA wrote:Many thanks to my esteemed colleague, Madame Lawgrad Commonwealth for raising the initial question.

This is why I've always been concerned about the basketball players getting food at tailgate. NCAA is so picky that you never know which direction they will go.

The issue is drawing line on 'extraordinary' - next thing you know some tarhole parent would be getting free meals because they were agoraphobic.

Duke football parents posted a link today on FB to Caring Bridge. Dad Connette posted about Mama and it sounds like more serious vibes and prayers are in order. Am not sure if this link will work but best I can do.

Thanks for posting ID. I just saw the link on the Duke Football Parents page and was going to post it here.
Also thanks CathyCA for checking into the NCAA compliance rules on providing meals. I never would have thought of that. Do you think it is okay that other football parents provide meals because I know some have signed up?

Based on the NCAA response NO. It is absolutely NOT okay. Having said that, I would hope the NCAA would consider the intent and circumstances before they even considered imposing any penalty, but I wouldn't chance it.

So, how did we get by with all the collections for the Holliday hospital bills? What made that ok?

I was thinking the same thing too, Ima. I think it's more of "we" haven't been caught than why was it okay.Ima Facultiwyfe wrote:So, how did we get by with all the collections for the Holliday hospital bills? What made that ok?

I think those were set up by, or at least with the help of, the university. If you remember there were all kinds of strict rules about what the money could be used for. Like, I don't think Blair's mom could use the money for a hotel when he was in rehab in Atlanta.Ima Facultiwyfe wrote:So, how did we get by with all the collections for the Holliday hospital bills? I would hope that the compliance office is aware of the effort and that the NCAA would view it as friends helping friends since the parents are a unique friendship group.Cheermom wrote:Thanks for posting ID. I just saw the link on the Duke Football Parents page and was going to post it here.

LG is right. If it comes through the help of the university in an extraordinary situation, it's okay. The university likely needs to get pre-approval from the NCAA first.lawgrad91 wrote:I think those were set up by, or at least with the help of, the university. QFE from Brian, the guy from Duke's Compliance office:
It may not seem fair, but our university is doing things by the book, and for that we should be grateful. For situations like Brandon’s, the NCAA does allow us (Duke) to help with meals and other expenses that are not normally permissible, and we are doing our best to make this difficult time a little easier for Brandon and his family. I think the key phrase is:
We are looking into additional ways to help, and if there is an opportunity for our fans to provide any assistance, we will be sure to let you know as part of our efforts to get the word out.
that tells me there is no current path for fans (or football parents) to provide assistance.
