Actually, I am trying to cut back. (yea, right... ;) )

Thanks to all for the well wishes for pain relief and a speedy recovery. Keep those cards and letters coming...

Oh WTH, it's certainly worth at least ONE more post   ;) .

I would have honestly NOT like to have had either procedure but I was 5 years late on the colonoscopy (but I think that was a 100+ post thread, not ALL of which were mine... :D ). I shoulda had the hernia surgery a year ago or so. I hope it's a long time before I need local/general anesthesia or conscious sedation again :(( :(( . I have not enjoyed being a health care consumer. I much prefer the provider role but I now have a brand new association/relationship/understanding with those on "the receiving end" of the spectrum. That's also quite an interesting point as my surgeon recently had a prostate biopsy and he was not a happy person either being the comsumer intead of the provider.

I had reconstructive ankle surgery back in 93 and was prescribed percocets then as I was laid up in bed for close to a month and went stir crazy, one day I hobbled to the kitchen and started cooking with some wine (Ya know ya have to taste to make sure it is okay), I found that I was able to walk without pain, WOW, felt it later, but not being a fan of these mind knumbing Rx products (the percs really messed with my stomach), I found the experience to be quite surprising!!!! Apparently, similar to the retrospective analysis of THE situation!! :D :D :D
I never had the percocet and alcohol together. I abstained from adult beverages the night before surgery and the night of surgery, enjoying my 1st adult beverage again last evening about 14 hours after my last Percocet. I am not sure I would have been conscious partaking of both after my experience with the narcotic alone.

I have my own, but thanks anyway. They will be filed away in the back of the medicine chest, hopefully NEVER to be used again.

You'll have to draw and quarter me for it...

(you know I legally can't sell/give it to you...  )

OTOH, thanks for the well wishes. :D

Yes, I of course know that. And frankly, that's just as well...I seem to recall enjoying it maybe a little too much the time or two I ingested it recreationally in college (yes, I also know what a terrible idea that was, hence the cessation of such activity). Anyway, glad you're on the way back.

Thanks, man. When you coming down to the Triangle area? I'll show you my scar. No, I won't, but I will make sure you have a nice meal at one of the Brunchgates in the fall if it coincides with a home game OR the Kansas game/housewarming party for Tilly in Sept. :D I would certainly offer you a fine, hand-crafted ale, too, but I know you are not much of a beer guy. DukePA makes some great mimosas and BONES makes some dee-lish 'tinis, too. :D

I seriously don't ever recall having taken ANY narcotics before except before/during surgery. I really do believe that is why I passed out twice and almost a 3rd time yesterday AM. The Motrin and ice packs are working fairly well since I "abandonded ship" on the hard stuff.

Glad to see that you're recovery is allowing you to continue this conversation online.

Wonder why your surgeon didn't use Vicodin with acetaminophen?..... worked pretty well for my two recent encounters with the surgeons and radiologists at Wake Forest. (My surgeon also advised taking 100mg. of Colace with each dose of Hyrdocodone APAP.... smart advice considering typical side effects of pain killers.)

Please keep the commentary coming! :ymapplause:

He thought about switching to Vicodin when I had the reaction to Percocet. He chose Percocet 1st because the repair he did was more extensive than he thought and figgered something stronger would be better. I elected to bag the Percocet and go with 400 mg Motrin every 8 hours and an ice pack every 1-2 hours. The last combo has worked well. I may have waited a bit too long to take the Colace but thought I had consumed enough soft foods, fruits and liquids (non-alcoholic) in the first 12-18 hours after surgery to render me "regular."

(more @$#% quote problems again)

I hope all's well, and that our wives' get-together has run smoothly.

Sounds like you didn't have the same hernia that I had a few years ago. Mine was an umbilical one, which meant a fairly good, less than an hour in surgery kind of deal, and no scar. I didn't warn you about the pain afterwards. It was mostly bad/tolerable for 24-48 hours. After that, the worst of it was when I had to sit up... a definite no-no if you don't figure out alternate ways to do so. Do NOT go toting six packs and large package containers; let the assistant do it for you. Follow those directions about not lifting things. You'll get back to it at some point, but don't push it.

And it also hurts to laugh.

To avoid laughing hysterically, avoid all posts by mojo and ej. ;) On the other hand, I think the first mate's 13 pillow treatment is great for rehab.

On another note, now that you've completed a colonoscopy and a hernia, do you have any other exciting things planned for 2009?
Cheers,

I had an inguinal hernia repair and the pain has been 1-2/10 today and was 3-4/10 yesterday. As I mentioned previously, the 400 mg of Motrin every 8 hours and ice packs every 1-2 hours has helped, in addition to realizing which actions hurt more than others. My surgeon said it was a bit more complicated/extensive than he thought and had to do a bit more complex/longer repair than he initially believed needed to be done. I'll find out about THAT one in my 1st post-op visit next week. I think it was more than 60 but less than 90 minutes. I have no qualms about him at all as he is a friend of the family, from our church, has been practicing for 20-25 years and the anesthesiologist also spoke VERY favorably of him when I informed him who was doing the procedure.

I am well aware about the lifting (nothing over 20 pounds for a month, but 12 ounces curls are acceptable :)) ) and the laughing, In fact, I thought BONES' post from yesterday or earlier this AM was hysterical and he thought the laughter may have caused my "other" problem. We exchanged a few PM's and I assured him THAT was not the cause of the other "situation." :(( And, no, it was not busted sutures/surgical repair site   .

For other exciting things in 2009, I was considering a root canal and perhaps gluteal implants.
