Duke v. Miami (OH)

Post by windsor » November 17th, 2010, 9:40 am

First thing….wholly crap we’re good. Really good. Really really good.

Second thing: Miles/Mason – free throws gentlemen…free throws. No one is guarding you. Neither you nor the basket are in motion. It is not difficult. This chubby middle aged woman can do better than 1-6 from the line. Really. Also…two small points…if you are going to go to hoop go STRONG to the hoop. Lastly..DO NOT DRIBBLE.

Third Thing: Kyrie Irving is a freak of nature. Just one thing – I understand that you were all everything in high school. Please look around. Most of the young men wearing the uniform that looks like yours were all everything in high school as well. This is good news. It means you do not have to everything yourself. Trust me on this. When you drive the lane and three defenders collapse on you simple math says that someone (more probably TWO someones) is unguarded. Please consider the pass from to time…oh and speaking of passes, please save the over the shoulder dipsy-doo for the playground. Thanks so much….oh yes…one more thing…look up in those rafters…see the jerseys? I have no doubt yours could be there one day…think about it.

Fourth Thing: Kyle you are on a basketball scholarship not a crowd surfing scholarship. I think K will still let you start if you skip the once a game throw yourself into the crowd/band. These have been home games and the crowd WILL catch you. The wine and cheesers in the dean dome will not. We need you. Please be careful. Thanks.

Fifth Thing: Coach K – far be it from me, who has never coached a single basketball game in her life, to tell you (with 870 wins, 4 national titles, Olympic Gold And a world title) how to coach but…I’m really loving how deep our bench is and it is great to see so many players getting solid minutes…it would be really nice if we could keep that up. See what you can do….if it isn’t too much trouble…sir.

Six Thing: Crazies - you were in great voice again last night. Do NOT let up. DO NOT LET UP. Remember it is "OUR HOUSE!!"

Bonus props to the Blue Devil, whose head band read "Red Hawk Down" - made me laugh.

The article on goduke.com has this gem from the m-oh coach:
"When you're getting beat pretty thoroughly, first thing is, you realize, 'OK, they're beating us,'" Miami coach Charlie Coles said. "And the second thought you have is, 'OK, they're beating us pretty good.' And the third thought you have is, 'Uh-oh, are we going to set any records tonight?'"

Their coach was dead-pan hilarious with some of his quotes.

This was my favorite from their coach:
(from Charlotte Observer)
...young reporter asked Charlie Coles, the colorful coach of Miami (Ohio), why his players seemed nervous and were fumbling the ball against Duke.
Coles looked the reporter in the eye.
"Let me ask you something," he said. "Are you scared of a bear?"
The reporter said yes.
"Why?"
"It's bigger and stronger," the reporter said.
"Now you understand why they were fumbling the ball," Coles said.

Fear the bear...and the spork :happy-bouncyblue: :happy-bouncyblue: :happy-bouncyblue:

This game was the first game I watched this year of Duke's. I heard all the hype this year but hadn't watched them play. I have a few observations

We are crazy deep. Last year, it was evident that Nolan, Kyle, and Jon were our 3 best players. Just watching that game, it's hard to say who our best player is. Kyle, Nolan, Kyrie, Mason, and Seth all impressed me. And Andre looked like he got his shot back. The only discouraging thing was Miles play, but it appeared he had an injured/dislocated finger. Kudos to him for playing through the pain, though

We are alarmingly athletic. Mason was flying high and Kyrie was flying down court. When Nolan is arguably you're third most athletic player, in my opinion, that shows you how deep we are.

We have a great mesh of players. By this I mean our players work well together

Nolan and Kyrie are the athletic PGs who can make plays. And Nolan can play the 2 spot and do the same
Kyle is the playmaking, versatile SF with senior leadership
Andre and Seth can spot up and hit threes from anywhere
Mason and Miles are athletic big man down low

Honestly, the only thing we lack is a back to the basket scorer, which we knew we'd be missing. I don't know if Mason or Miles will develop that as we go, but I think we may be able to simply overwhelm teams. The only team that scares me as of right now is Ohio State and Sullinger.

Needless to say, this game got me giddy about basketball the rest of the season

Agreed on the depth, it's going to be interesting to see who is riding the pine in March...there is so much talent on the court and on the bench it's nuts. Hopefully nobody gets hurt this year, but if we do we have the depth to handle an injury well.

I would only add one thing.
Ryan Kelly, so far, appears to be the most improved player from last year.
Good observation.
