She was TOTALLY surprised and happy! The funny thing was that when I came downstairs, my second son said "Hey daddy, where are YOU going?" I said "Why?" And he said "Cause you're wearing your FANCY shirt! You NEVER wear that."

I told him I just wanted to look good for mommy's birthday dinner. I was wearing long pants for the first time since Easter, and my good shoes too. I managed to pack the boys' sleepover stuff in the back of the minivan while Erica was at the market, so she never suspected a thing. I NEVER surprise her. She always stumbles across cards or gifts I get her and hide, or I hide them so well I can't find them on the day. I'm constantly giving her past due gifts that I find months later.

Anyway, she was SO pleased. And SO surprised. Michael ALMOST gave it away. My dad was a couple minutes late meeting us, and he climbed in the back and said, "Hey dad, why is there a sleeping bag back here?" So I thought fast and said, "I must have left it back there from your last sleepover." Then he said, "Hey dad, why is my..." I cut him off and yelled, "Boy, what are you doing in the back of the van! Get your behind up here RIGHT now or you're in big trouble!" Luckily, that shut him up. Dad got there and hopped in the van and took off with the kids while we hopped in his Lexus and drove up to Arlington to Ruth's Chris. We had a WONDERFUL time. Erica said it was her best birthday ever, cause it was such a nice surprise, and we got a little peace and quiet. They put birthday confetti on the table, which we brought home for the kids, and she got a free piece of chocolate sin cake, her FAVORITE. We ate a quiet meal with a beautiful view of the Potomac River from the 11th story restaurant. She even cut loose a little and had a pina colada, which she only does once or twice a year. All in all, it was a GREAT evening, and a great meal. After dinner, we picked up Katie on the way home (she's not QUITE ready for sleepovers just yet). Erica was also really surprised and happy, as were the boys, to find out they were getting to sleep over with PopPop. And, since Katie still sleeps in a bed with rails, the wife and I had a little private time that evening.

All in all, it was a great birthday for her. She had a wonderful time. And I TOTALLY surprised her for once!

At the lake tonight. The OP burned us some nice, little filets and DukeRah sauteed squash and onions. And we had a nice red to wash it down.

Our daughter, Dana and her husband, had us over for a mid day meal at 3:00, So I'm calling it "lupper" (lunch & supper). We had oyster stew, salad ,salmon cakes with a dill sauce, red potatoes and crusty bread. Desert was Italian ice cream . It was great. Good food and wonderful company.

Early, yes. Danny gets up at 1:30 am to go to work and Dana gets up at 4:00 to start her work day. They go to bed early to begin their day. I can not imagine living with their schedule.

Kelly and I split a porterhouse last night, along side maple-glazed baby carrots, mushroom quinoa, and lovely bottle of Bordeaux.
