Re: All Time Favorite Cameron Crazy Cheers
I wasn't at the game (or any other for that matter) but heard about this from someone who was coaching the visiting team.
A Canadian school (St. Francis Xavier University) was on a tour of US schools and played really well against Harvard. I can't remember if they beat Harvard or just came really close to doing so (something tells me they did beat them) but a couple of days later they were playing Duke in Cameron. Duke was winning handily and the Crazies started chanting "We're not Harvard. We're not Harvard." I thought that was priceless.

When Ken Denlinger of the Washington Post referred to the Duke students as "majoring in smartass," one of our fellow students responded with a poster at the Duke-Carolina game: "Hey, Denlinger! I hadn't forgotten about my promise here. Now for the rest of the story. Well, actually, another question before the rest of the story ;). Then, when the best/most accurate recollection is posted, I'll share the "punch line."
The cheer that has moved to the top of my list now is : "Inhale, exhale." Not only do I think this is one of the more clever cheers in CIS history, there is an "update" to it. ;)
Who can recount the best/most accurate story/explanation about this cheer?

So, unc player, Steve Hale, had either suffered a rib fracture or pneumonia or something respiratory (can't remember which). When the holes came to Cameron, Hale was instructed to, "Inhale . . . Exhale!" If I remember correctly, Hale wen't on to become Dr. Hale. A pulmonologist perhaps???devildeac wrote:I hadn't forgotten about my promise here. Now for the rest of the story. IIRC even Steve Hale thought the "InHale/ExHale" cheer was clever and got a laugh out of it.

This is pretty darn close, IIRC. It could have been a collapsed lung, also. It may have also had to do with his going into or exiting the game. He did indeed go on to becoming a physician, but a pediatrician. A lung specialist would have been much more fitting.
Now for the most ironic or funniest part.
My daughter, now a Duke cheerleader, is at summer school, at unc (don't ask, it's a strategic move), taking Physics and her roommate for the summer is none other than Steve Hale's daughter, who my wife says is a very nice, sweet young lady.
I am not quite sure how/when I am going to break the news to her about the history and the cheer.
That folks, is the rest of the story.
I need to excuse myself now.

Re: All Time Favorite Cameron Crazy Cheers
I would think that she is well familiar with the story. I'm sure her father would probably love to meet you, as someone who was there for the cheer and discuss it with you. Of course, he'd probably bring up some rather unpleasant recent "history", so I'd avoid it at all costs!devildeac wrote:This is pretty darn close, IIRC. It could have been a collapsed lung, also. Been sitting in the same seat in Cameron since 1969. Heard 'em all and I think "OH BABY!" ranks right up there with the best of them! Inhale, exhale has always been a fave of mine. And a big banner strung on the rail once when Oklahoma came to call read "Oh Go Homa!" (Not a chant per se, but I liked it.)

Steve Hale has a daughter in COLLEGE? My gosh, the guy was class of Dawkins, Alarie, Bilas, Williams & Henderson. He has a daughter in COLLEGE? I'm getting old. It flips me out when people who are younger than me have kids who are older than my kids. Steve Hale has a kid in college. I am so old.devildeac wrote:This is pretty darn close, IIRC.
