Cut, a Blue Devil "for a very long time"

Post by devildeac » January 13th, 2010, 10:41 pm

Heard at halftime tonight that he was heading to UT to interview. This was from 2 fairly reliable sources. No confirmation of this from our "source" from the sidelines...

Thanks DD for the update..I've been looking and I trust sources from inside Cameron. Of course I would hate for him to go, but if he does I hold lots more respect for him than Kiffin will ever get from any of his current or future teams. He turned them down once before they even asked, but you have to know it's a dream job for him. And IF he leaves, he leaves us better than when he got here.

According to the Chronicle, quoting sports information director Art Chase, Tennessee hasn't contacted Duke for permission to talk to Cut as of this evening, The article further says that Coach Cut is in Durham tonight:

Fingers majorly crossed. If Cut leaves, it sets us back several more years.

ESPN just had some nice video shots of Cut, stating he IS the number two choice after Muschamp.

ESPN is saying that Will Muschamp is TN's top target. I sure hope they're right.

I asked the question to the two best non-team sources I have, and DD heard the answer. Not at all what I wanted to hear. If UT hires Fulmer as AD, which is rumored, Cut is gone. Fulmer is his mentor and best friend. If they don't hire Fulmer, we have a chance to retain Cut. I sure hope we keep him, but my optimism meter is mighty low...

The two articles linked on DBR are pretty interesting. The Duke perspective is that he won't leave because he hasn't finished what he started. The TN perspective is that he'd be crazy to turn them down, along with all the usual slams about Duke's football team and the chance to coach in the SEC and win national championships. I sure hope the Duke perspective article is correct. It may be wishful thinking, but it seems to ring a bit more true than the "anyone would want to be here because we're a superior team in a superior conference" argument. This whole situation has a bit of the "Coach K to the Celtics" and "Coach K to the Lakers" feel to it. (Anyone else remember that?) I could be completely off base, though.

Coach Cut to UT? Oh come now.... that's just crazy talk! (pun intended...hehehehe)

He isn't going anywhere and I agree, this has the 'stank' of the "Coach K to LA" scent to it.

It don't look good. According to ESPN this morning, Muschamp has rebuffed Tennessee, and all accounts are that Cut is the second choice in Knoxville. That said, there's a sizable portion of the Vols fanbase that would be displeased with retreads (Fulmer as AD, Cut as head coach). Tough crowd...but that's another discussion entirely.
If Cut does head to Knoxville, I'd really like to see us at least put in a call to the Ol' Ball Coach. They're not exactly thrilled with him in Columbia these days, and if he can win 7-8 games a year there in the SEC, here's betting he can do the same in the ACC in Durham.

Dennis Dodd, a very reputable college football columnist at CBS Sportsline, suggests in his latest missive that Air Force coach Troy Calhoun might be Tennessee's next target, now that Muschamp seems to be off the table:

It's not too late to start a strong vibe campaign to keep Coach Cutcliffe in Durham!

They're posting over yonder that we're out of the woods! UT has hired themselves a coach and it's NOT OURS! Assuming this good news is true, lets everybody get their behinds into seats in WW next year and yell our silly heads off!!!!
