NOVA beat us last year...badly. I witnessed it in person. Given what also happened in LAX, I will no longer attend Duke sporting events in New England. Thus the relocation to Ohio.

My rice is also underway.

Good morning all.
Just trying to work up the fortitude to get outside and start shoveling the 20" of snow on my driveway and sidewalk. Wish me luck!

My father in law has a snowblower. That thing is a godsend. We used it twice last night, each time after about 6 inches on the ground. We have another 6 inches to blow this morning.bjornolf wrote:Good morning all.

That's awesome. What's the poem?CathyCA wrote:Yeah, thanks to my grandmother, there are about 30 million and a half books on grammar (I Before e (except after c), Woe is I, and Grammar for Dummies. I just happened to run into this the other night, Affect-verb, effect-noun. Used as a verb: "How will divorce affect Tiger Woods?". Used as a noun: "What would be the effect of divorce on Tiger Woods?" And fwiw, I found a way to remember pi. There is some sort of poem that every word represents a number. So "How (3) a (1) bird(4)" would represent the first four letters. Now I remember it to 32 decimal places and can recite it: 3.14159265358979323846264338327950Hancock4Duke wrote:Yes, it should be 'affect'.

It's just the number of letters in each word. I think. 3.141592653589793238462643 etc.

Okay. I understand that part now. Memorizing the poem is going to be my downfall.bjornolf wrote: It's just the number of letters in each word. I think.
I think it would be easier to remember a limerick.

Re: Grammar police, grammar police to the LTE...
Or the number. I remember pi out to 7 decimal places without a poem. The poem idea is a good one, though. I can see where some people might remember a poem better than a number. A calculator uses pi to a gazillion decimal places, but is there really any need for that? Won't you get rid of most of the extra decimal places because they're not significant?CathyCA wrote:Okay. Most people say that is it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong: it is character.

Re: LTE 2.0
I use pi out to 5 places. Rarely does anything I do require more than that precision wise. Of course, I really don't use pi much at all any more. Not since I left the world of Mech E.

In my advanced physics classes, we'd just set pi = 1. We'd also set c (speed of light) = 1.
Makes the calculations so much easier.
