I heard y'all get a crapload of snow, hence the "great white north" name.

Regrding my previous post in this thread. I spent a summer in Montreal with a Duke program. It snowed in May, twice. Granted 20 years in Boston may have raised my tolerance level but my opinion is that in Canada you have two choices - fucking cold or July. Sorry, colchar, you won't be able to convince me otherwise.

I spent my honeymoon in Nova Scotia, early September, very nice trip, enjoyed myself very much. It was fucking cold.

Crapload is relative - depends on where you are. The Maritimes (the provinces on the Atlantic) get the shit kicked out of them every year. Here in Ontario it depends on where you are in the province - up north is bad, Ottawa can get killed, but here in Southern Ontario it isn't really that bad. Out west can be bad but once you hit British Columbia their climate is totally different (think Washington state) and they get relatively little snow.

It snowing in Montreal in May was something of an anomaly as it doesn't normally happen. The average temp is 66 degrees. The record high is 93 degrees and the record low is 24. Keep in mind, that is the record low and is just cold enough for snow. With an average temperature of 66 degrees getting snow was an anomaly.

I was last sitting out on a bar's patio about ten days ago and will be again in early May. We only really get winter from December (not really that bad at all) until March. By April things are warming up again.

As for Nova Scotia - that, too, was out of the ordinary (unless you have/had a low tolerance for cold) because they are usually one of our warmest provinces (because of the Atlantic). Nova Scotia's climate would be about the same as that of somewhere like Maine. In the late summer and fall they are usually subjected to hurricanes and tropical storms - although these have usually weakened by the time they reach land.

Umm, ILJ and I honeymooned in Quebec/Montreal in mid-April. It was boo chilly.

I agree completely with BD's comments.
I agree completely with Tilly's response to Ozzie's comments.

Did Ozzie say something? I wasn't paying attention.

Temperature has relatively little to do with whether or not a place is fucking cold. It's something about the air quality. It's not like I think it's a bad thing, well, not always. The cold can seep into your bones. But my admittedly limited exposure to Canadian air has done nothing to alleviate my opinion that it's fucking cold there.

It really isn't - trust me.

Is it true that there is a town in north Ontario with dream comfort memory to spare?

If so, what does that mean?

Also, if you're talking to someone from North Carolina andyou say "it's not that cold - it's just like Maine, or Detriot" you're not making your point very well, IMO.

Today, here in NC, it was 51 degrees and breezy, but very moist air - but it was fucking cold to me.

I knew all time spent listening to Neil Young in HS and at Duke would pay dividends:

That explains why I wasn't familiar with it - I hate Neil Young.

And to me, too! I was freezing my tushie off today! I had on a turtleneck, a little sweater, a leather jacket and a scarf, and I was still cold when I stepped outside.

Seriously?!? A turtleneck, sweater, jacket, and scarf?!?!? That's about 10 degrees celcius. In that weather I might, maybe (and that's a very very big maybe), put on a sweatshirt. Maybe.

ETA: In the spring, as soon as it hits 5-10 degrees celcius, people start wearing shorts.

Seriously. I left my earmuffs and gloves in the car. It wasn't quite cold enough to use them today.
