How difficult is it to install memory in a desktop? Is it basically a case of just popping it into the slot and off you go? I'm thinking about just buying the memory while on campus and putting it in myself so that I don't have to lug my desktop with me. If it is a simple process then I'll try to do it. If it isn't simple then perhaps I would be better off just having it done at the campus tech store.

ETA: I just called the campus tech shop and the guy said he would have to order the RAM so it looks like I'll end up just taking it in to a local guy who has done work on my system in the past and having him do it for me - just easier that way.

Yes it's that easy.

Cochar, memory is cheap. If you're going to the trouble and expense of buying another 1 Gig, splurge and get more. I'm pretty sure the two slots don't have to have an equal amount in each (CB&B?), but I don't think so. Be sure to get whatever "speed" RAM you already have (ie, 533 MHz or 800 MHz); whatever the slowest speed you have the other will match, so you don't gain anything by buying "faster" RAM. While 2 Gig is "enough", more will be faster, a lot faster. The 32 bit version will only use 3 Gig, but the 64 bit version can use whatever you have.
Unless pigs can fly, you do not need to pair memory of the same size in different slots.
Really, because I've always been told that it was a best practice to match your DIMMs in capacity. I didn't think all motherboards could handle mismatched DIMMs.

It is definitely best practice, as Ozzie has eluded to the fact that systems will dumb down to the lowest common denominator, which means you'll take a performance hit. However, you can still throw in a 1 GB and 512 MB DIMM and expect your computer to utilize the full amount of RAM.

I just took it to the guy who has done work on my system in the past and it will only cost $40 to have another 1GB of RAM thrown in there.

How much for 2 GB? http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... &srkey=ram Looking at prices at TigerDirect, 1 GB is ~$30, 2 GB is ~$50, and he's only making $10 profit for installing it (which is a very fair price). If you've got an extra ~$20 (USD), you should get the extra RAM. It is $20 well spent.

I agree with that unless he's using used RAM which he has available. (Nothing wrong with that, I do it all the time). But if he's getting it new, Ozzie is correct, get it now while you are doing it.

If I wanted 2GB he would have to get it new (eg. order some in) and it would have cost $70-$80 (prices up here in Canada are higher than down there in the US despite the dollar being damned near at par). He had a bunch of 1GB memory sticks sitting around so he gave me one slightly cheaper than it would have cost to order it in.

ETA: At Tiger Direct Canada 1GB or DDR2 RAM starts around $32 and goes up from there.

2GB of DDR2 Ram starts around $55 and goes up from there.

I guess the price he quoted me depends entirely on where he gets his RAM and how much he had to pay for it when he originally got it. I thought $40 was a decent enough price to have it installed especially as it is a small shop and he has done work for me in the past which was quite reasonably priced. Being a small shop his level of service is also very good.
