Notre Dame Football
They fired Charlie Weis today...he had 10 years remaining on his contract and potentially up to $18 million still owed to him. Damn, I want that kind of contract!
The other item I found laughable was this statement by Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick: "It’s time to move forward because it is critical to this program and to its place in the university and college football that we compete at the highest level. That we compete for national championships.” He's a little high on Notre Dame football. I guess he hasn't noticed that the college football world has gotten on fine without ND as a NC for the last 21 years.
Finally, the not so laughable part...the "less than brilliant" person who offered Mr. Weis that contract is none other than Kevin White, recently appointed AD at Duke.

This last bit about Kevin White was mentioned on Sunday's "The Sports Reporters." I forgot which reporter made mention of this, but he also wondered why Duke would have hired him.YmoBeThere wrote:Finally, the not so laughable part...the "less than brilliant" person who offered Mr. Weis that contract is none other than Kevin White, recently appointed AD at Duke.

I think I saw somewhere that White looked pretty smart when he gave Weis the extension. Not sure. For some reason I've never particularly liked Weis. Maybe it's because I thought they treated Ty Willingham poorly.Lavabe wrote:This last bit about Kevin White was mentioned on Sunday's "The Sports Reporters." Re: Notre Dame Football
I think the Kevin White situation is a bit more complex than it has been portrayed in the media. My recollection is that White was opposed to firing Willingham after only 3 years (making him the only ND coach every to not be allowed to finish out his initial contract; that, coupled with the PR nightmare of initially passing on Ty for George O'Leary, didn't make Notre Dame look like the most progressive institution in America). He lost this battle and from that point on felt as though he was only AD in name.
The Weis extension was in large part engineered by Weis's people. After the close loss to USC (Weis's signature "win" in his tenure), they began floating the idea that he would leave ND and take a head coaching job in the NFL. The Irish--and Kevin White--responded by tying him up for the long-term, a stupid move, but one that showed how confident they were in Weis. Weis's people played them like a fiddle.
Eventually White got sick of not being a real AD and left Notre Dame. In all honesty, Notre Dame is a more prestigious AD job than Duke, so a lot of people were surprised that he made the move. But, he wasn't really the AD.

If this is really how things played out, it makes me a bigger fan of Kevin White.rockymtn devil wrote:I think the Kevin White situation is a bit more complex than it has been portrayed in the media. Yeah, I mentioned that somewhere, I guess on DBR. It was Mike Lupica who said something like "how did this guy ever get another AD job?"Lavabe wrote:This last bit about Kevin White was mentioned on Sunday's "The Sports Reporters." Since ND is now looking for a football coach, I understand there's an experienced coach who will be available after his team plays their bowl game.

They'll announce current UCincinnati coach Brian Kelly as their new head coach in the next day or so.
