It's time this thread took off. Since we played Virginia last year, Coach Cut has tape from last year's drubbing to use in planning for the game Saturday. (I'm thinking back to what he said about the planning fro the NC Snake game.)

I hope Cut has them focusing on one game and one game only this week and learned his lesson about the sub-standard preparation, both physically and mentally, prior to the Richmond game.

I'm thinking that Richmond game will be used as a motivational tool for the rest of the season, but you have to hope that time hasn't faded the memory of it too much. UVA is not the same team we beat the hell out of last year..and UVA has that game as their own motivation. I wish we could see it.

Even more significantly, we'll see what Coach Cutcliffe puts together for this contest. Game after game this year I have been amazed at his genius anticipating and organizing what is necessary for the team to improve..... and they've been doing just that..... exponentially each game. Coach Cutcliffe doesn't always follow the conventional wisdom. He has his own clear path and follows it. In many ways, I think his coaching acumen surpasses Bill Murray at his best..... and Bill was good coach who produced nationally ranked teams before the world started changing on him.

I believe that Wallace Wade is looking down on all this and is watching with a big smile on his face! It's uncanny that the coach who's pulling us out of the ditch now is actually part of the Wade coaching tree. Wallace Wade was hired when Duke needed and wanted to rise out of modest success into a national power. David Cutcliffe has a similarly difficult and important mission. Could there be another coach who would do this well at Duke right now? Not in a million years. I believe we're seeing history being made. I'm kept that notion to myself pretty much because I was certain it would be viewed as unrealistic, wishful thinking. The Richmond game shook me off stride and left me confused about my strong premonition. The NC State game proved to resonate with what I thought would happen. Oh well, so much for that.

I do think we're going to continue to see lots of passing while the running component is strong enough to try again in a mix with the passing. It's kind of like hitting lots of threes on the basketball court. As long as we're succeeding with the passing game and Thad is hot, we'll develop that path to success. In many ways, it's a case of following your strengths. Using that sort of strategy will also allow the offensive line to continue to improve in ways that will benefit the running game.

Well stated. He publicly acknowledged it was his fault the staff and the players were not mentally and physically ready for the Spiders. I don't think that happens again for quite a while.

If you listen to the player being interviewed before or after games now, thy tend to say much the same thing. I think this reflects how much on top of focus and attitude the staff is and the guys on the team are soaking it up and believing it.

If I thought for a minute that the players were falling into the old mental traps before games, I'd have already ordered some Gris-gris from NOLA.

I can't imagine us overlooking ANY team this year. I'd be SHOCKED if that's what really happened against Richmond. Anyway, we should definitely be ready for UVA. Whether we win or not is another matter, but we should be ready, and we definitely shouldn't overlook them.

Considering what I've learned about the flu over the past two-three weeks, the flu outbreak during training camp may have had a lot to do with Duke's lackluster performance against Richmond. Look at long it has taken Thad to get into a good rhythm.

Not "ready" doesn't necessarily mean you overlooked the team. There is a difference, albeit a subtle one.

I like the confident, determined sound of the players being interviewed. I'm sure that Coach Cutcliffe has something in his plan we might not be anticipating...... and that VA will be surprised by.

Watched the Duke Football Show this morning.... interesting that Brandon King was coached in high school by Randy Cuthbert.
