Vibes for OzzieDad

Post by OZZIE4DUKE » October 22nd, 2009, 10:00 am

My dad (95) had a ministroke again last night. My mom was helping him back from the bathroom about 1 a.m. when he lost feeling on one side and couldn't walk. After a 911 call and checkout at the hospital, the scan found a small bleed in his brain. I spoke to them both about 9 a.m. (my brother called to tell me about it about 8:30) and they were still in the emergency room. He's feeling much better and spoke without any slurring that I could tell, and his feeling has come back. They were waiting for him to be taken up to a room (and admitted). Being in crankypants mode, he wants to go home but that's not going to happen and he knows it. They both told me not to go running down there (Ft. Lauderdale). So my current plans are to sit tight and see what develops. I am planning to be at Brunchgate and the games on Saturday. Brisket gets sliced this evening.

CRUD.

I hope OzzieDad is well enough to go home soon.

I'm sending hugs, prayers and vibes your way, Ozzie, that you will not worry and stress over your Dad. (Even though I know you will!) He's in good hands and getting wonderful care.

Hope he's recovered and home soon. So difficult to know what/how much to do with the elderly, especially when they're our own.

Quick update, and it's all good news so far. The vibes from here are certainly very powerful and muchly appreciated! :ymapplause: :)

I spoke with his doctor, who is both a neurologist and a psychologist. He said my dad had a small bleed on the right side of his brain, near the front. He is currently fully alert and lucid. Movement and feeling has returned on both sides. He is speaking without difficulty. He suffered no apparent trauma to cause the bleed - it is just a result of old age weakening the blood vessels. They will repeat the exam/scan in the morning and hopefully he'll be able to go home in a couple of days. My mom, who was up all night with him, has gone home to get some lunch and take a nap, and she'll go back to the hospital later this afternoon.

I know how scary this all has been for you and your family. Been there, done that. Sounds like you all did everything right. Realized what was happening and got him help right away. That's the critical part. Good job all of you!!!! He's a lucky guy to have such a close and loving family. (So are YOU, I might add!) Here are some vibes to assure that all continues to improve and go smoothly the rest of the way. We'll lift one to his health on Saturday!!!!

Just a quick update.

They moved my dad from the hospital to a rehab center on Tuesday afternoon. He has a good appetite but other than that I don't know much about his physical condition. They were going to try to get him up out of bed today. I'll find out later tonight how that went when I speak with my mom.

I'm driving to Ft. Lauderdale tomorrow and will see him Friday morning. Also, at the suggestion of a friend down there, I have called the local Hospice service and set up an appointment with them (and with my mom - she doesn't know this yet) for Friday afternoon. I think they will be of great help for them when he has to leave the rehab after two weeks (that's what Medicare will pay for). Medicare pays for all the Hospice service, even if it is (almost) 24 hours/day assistance. They sound wonderful. I'll let you know.
