Any Guitar Players Here?

My wife plays flute. I bought her a brand new Jupiter, which I understand is a pretty decent model, for about $400. Maybe it's time to take up the flute.

I also play the flute and still have the same one I've had since 1972!! It cost $50

She still had her old student model, but it didn't work right, and when I took it in, they said all the seals were rotted, and it would be cheaper to replace it than to fix it. So, I got her a Jupiter on sale. She loves it.

I kinda wish I were a guitar player. I need to buy a new instrument, but I'm a saxophonist and pianist. The sax I want is $4000 and the piano I want is at least $5000 used. I think being a guitarist would be cheaper.

It all depends on what quality of instrument you want to play, and the sound you want to make. You can find plenty of replicas, or Japanese/Chinese-made knockoffs that are quite affordable, but I'd really love a vintage Fender Jazz. That'll run about $5,000 used, in decent condition. Could run up to $10K in mint. None of this includes the amp/cabinet.

I have various AIR GEE-tars and the good thing about dem is.... they always sound perfect, they never break a string, I rock with them, they can be any brand I want them to be (even double necked), they didn't cost me a dime or a nickle, and I am perfect with each and every one!!!!! ;)

At least you're not a bassoonist like me. I played throughout school and for a little while in a community band. I used band-owned instruments because I've never been able to afford my own. Plastic student model bassoons start out around $3,000. An excellent wooden bassoon is more than $45,000. Maybe I'll win the lottery one day, sigh.

Time to switch to the saxophone!

I play the piano, but not very well. Shortly after moving to St Louis I went piano shopping and ended up with a Yamaha Clavinova (a digital piano). The sound quality was far superior to the spinets that were sitting in the showroom, and it was cheaper. The spinets all sounded tinny. The Clavinova actually sounds close to a grand piano. Love the sound of the grand, don't have the space.

Same here. I have a Kurzweil sp88 semi-weighted digital piano. Very nice quality. Got it used for about $500. We moved into a bigger house two years ago and I have plenty of room for a piano. Just need to find some money.

DukeUsul, I'm of the mind that you should buy a new saxophone, cost be damned. Let's face it, you are a saxophone player, you need a sax. If your car died, you'd buy a new one, right? In 10 years are you still going to regret the 2 grand or are you going to still be playing that sax?

Our piano has a cracked (but not all the way through, thank goodness) sounding board. My tuner, Fred 'The Magnificent', has kept it going for the last two years. He thinks he can get another three years out of it for me but not much more than that. Grand pianos are expensive, and no, I don't have to have a grand but well, once you do go grand, it's hard to go back. We inherited this one from my in-laws. They didn't take the greatest care of it. We used to have a studio upright. I took excellent care of that piano but it's just true a somewhat beat-up mediocre grand still sounds better than a well-cared for high end studio. So, I'm in the market for a new to us, decent used grand piano. When I find the right one for the right price, I will buy it, because there is no way we're going without a piano in my house. Three of the kids play now and it's only a matter of time before number 4 does. (And yes, I play too.) But if I sat down and was strict with my finances? No, a piano is not in the budget. Doesn't matter. We are piano players. We need a piano.

Fender makes it (and it's an American Fender). It was made years ago before Fender released the Blackie remakes in 2006 that are ridiculously expensive.

Yeah. "Blackie"--as I'm sure you're aware-- is just one guitar. It was the name of the black strat played by Clapton for years that was somewhat of a Frankenstein guitar. Long story short, he bought six vintage Strats in 1970 at a shop in Nashville. He gave one each to George Harrison, Pete Townshend, and Steve Winwood. With the remaining three, he assembled the best parts in the black finished one and that become his ax. That guitar was played for years before it was retired by Clapton, with all sorts of rock & roll scars.

Back in the 80s or 90s, Fender began making black Strats based on the Clapton Frankenstein guitar. They labeled these "Blackies". That's what I have. In terms of sound, pickups, etc., it's identical to Blackie. Then, a few years ago, Fender re-did Blackie with replicas of all of the scratches and burns and whatnot that Blackie had on it. That's the $24,000 guitar.
