One thing I've noticed, Lavabe and I very much disagree on the seriousness of the steroid issue in baseball.

I also think it's a guy thing. Granted I don't know all that many female sports fans. Present company excepted, but I think of you as Duke fans more than sports fans. But I think the whole steroid thing just doesn't bother the female fan as much.

On the contrary, I wasn't so much affected by it until I talked with a mother of a high school baseball player who was already feeling the effects of the situation. The trickle down effect and pressure on high school baseball is very real.

I hate it. I don't think it is good for the sport but, more importantly, I worry about the health of the athlete using PEDs. And that is true for any and all sports. As a cycling fan, I have to confess that it is nice to see use in other sports getting some of the bad press about PEDs.

LOL; great use of emoticons. I thought "sow cow" looked a tad off. Should've done some research before posting. The important thing is that a nonuple salchow would be wicked sweet.

Ulrich Salchow invented the jump. For those of you who can't tell the difference between the jumps, it's all in the take-off. And as anyone who has ever listened to Dick Button knows, the Axel is the only one that takes off moving forward. The Axel is, of course, named for Axel Paulson. Salchow was a Swede, Paulson a Norwegian but it's been since Sonja Henie that a Scandanavian figure skater has made much of an impact on the world stage (Finnish ice dancing team Rahkomo and Kokko excepted).

John Lester's mother was a competitive figure skater.

I was never a good enough athlete to necessitate the use of performance enhancing substances. My best event was the 400 and while I was decent for high school a career as a sprinter was not in the offing.

BD feels compelled to point out that Lester, Buchholz, and Papelbon are homegrown. But then again, so is Delcarmen.

And Wakefield has been on the Sox for so long that he almost feels that way. He was on the scrap heap when the Sox got him, so, I'll count him as talent the Sox recognized.
