I've never seen a reindeer with paws. In fact, I guess i've never seen a reindeer at all, but I'm sure they have hooves instead and they "pause" on the the rooftop so out can jump "Claus"....I guess as opposed to "claws". Then I've properly executed my medicine.Ima Facultiwyfe wrote:

I've just thought about it, and I've diagrammed the verse, and it MUST be "Up on the housetop, reindeer pause. . ." to let "good old Santa Claus" jump out of the sleigh. In "The Night Before Christmas," the narrator states, "And then in a twinkling I heard on the roof, the prancing and pawing of each little hoof." So, there were PAWS on the roof in at least one Christmas story or song!
