Words I hate

Post by wilson » September 19th, 2009, 10:54 pm

You all know (I think) about "webinar."
But I also really hate the word "physicality." It seems that one can't watch a football game without hearing it.

ITA. Where the heck did "physicality" come from? Is it just me, or are sportscasters the worst about making up words and somehow getting them into accepted usage?
Most people say that is it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong: it is character.

OED has it, but that doesn't make it OK.

Along the same lines, "irregardless," "judgement," and the like are also making their way into certain dictionaries.

differential

Mostly, I dislike it in calculus (proper use of the term, but I didn't get good grades in calculus), but I loathe it when sportscasters use the term instead of difference (subtraction).

Supposedly. I hate to hear people replace the 'd' with a 'v'.
...and the previously mentioned.

I also hate it when people say something is 'beyond approach' when they obviously mean 'beyond reproach'.

How about "for all intensive purposes," rather than "for all intents and purposes"?

vice

Not as in "drinking is my vice."

But as in "Let's focus on beating NCCU vice beating UNC right now."

That usage is like fingernails on a board to me, I don't know why.

Would someone please enlighten me on the use of "preventive" and/or "preventative"?

You certainly could misunderestimate someone if you underestimate them incorrectly. Not sure anyone ever means it that way. :D
