I feel bad for Paulus...
I watched a little bit of the Syracuse v. Penn State game last night, and I couldn't help but feel a little sorry for GP3/2. It seemed like every time there was a critical play, he made a nice pass. Then his receiver dropped it. In the short time I watched, I saw two passes for first downs on third down dropped, plus a PERFECTLY thrown ball dropped in the end zone on a 4th and goal from the 5. It's just brutal. He's starting to remind me of Jason Campbell of the Redskins, who led the league in dropped passes thrown by a QB last year at 39. He's doing everything he can, but if his guys can't hold on to the ball, there's nothing he can really do, is there?

(isn't that the substance used in the past to make receivers hands more adhesive?)

Technical question: Is he officially attending grad school, or is he finishing off some credits for his BA/BS?

Paulus is nothing if not a realist. I think he had a good idea what he was getting himself into. He must have a hide of iron and we all know he's very cool under fire. It was Penn St, for goodness sake, at home. Still, it's remarkable how composed he's been. I predict something good is just around the corner.

Remember that Syracuse was predicted to be a really bad football team, so don't expect a lot of wins. I am looking forward to GP getting his first though. He also needs a game without an INT.

Winning more games would certainly sweeten the the experience, but for Greg Paulus what a great opportunity to do something he loves!

Since GP had only one more year of total eligibility left, he had to find a way to waive the normal one-year transfer sit-out rule. One way to transfer (from an NCAA perspective) is to do it for academic reasons. He had to go to a school that has a program that Duke doesn't have (that's the way to get the NCAA to approve the waiver). Syracuse has a one year masters program in communications (which Duke doesn't).

Bjornolf - I am not sure that I would make the comparison of Greg to Jason Campbell. I've never thought Campbell was the guy Zorn or his predecessors should have put the investment in. They've been grooming him for now, what 3-4 years or more, I rest my case. This is the pro's and he's 1st string, produce baby!!!!! I am not sure of that 2nd statement and then making it all okay by deferring the blame to his teammates. The QB is pretty much the leader of the offense (IMHO and from the school I came from) and I have yet to hear him take the bullets for his mates and IT always seems, again IMHO, that his backup's do much better than him. I haven't looked at the stats but will as I've set myself up here for ridicule and chastising, but my gut is pretty good. However, I will note that I occasionally I do make mistakes and the one time I thought it happened, I was mistaken! ;)bjornolf wrote:I watched a little bit of the Syracuse v. Re: I feel bad for Paulus...
When including college, Jason Campbell has had 7 different coordinators and 7 different offensive systems to learn in 8 years. This is the FIRST time in his career that he's had the same system twice. Also, he was injured his first two years, so he's only started 37 games despite being 4 years in the league. According to Steve Young, who I'm sure everyone would agree knows more about playing NFL QB in the West Coast system than all of us combined, it takes 3-4 years to master the WC offense, and Young has said twice that I've heard that he thinks Campbell can do it. Campbell's had one season and one game so far in that system. Unfortunately, Zorn and Campbell are not gonna get more than two if things don't go right now. Also, Zorn has said he MAJORLY dumbed down the offense in the second half of last season to try to protect Campbell. Portis was hurt and the o-line had so many injuries it was like swiss cheese. Zorn cut the playbook down to simple 3 step and throws to protect Campbell's body. That's a big part of the reason the team fell apart in the second half last season. We'll see what happens this year.cl15876 wrote:Bjornolf - I am not sure that I would make the comparison of Greg to Jason Campbell. Re: I feel bad for Paulus...
We will have to agree to disagree at this time and I hope your defense and accounting of all the reasons why he hasn't performed is accurate, but I still see no comparison in spite of my favor for Greg compared to Campbell! Nothing personally against Campbell, but I don't think he is the leader (they are adaptive, agile, flexible, creative, make things happen and inspire their team mates to do things that they didn't believe were possible!!!) that he should be and that your defending. Frankly, I actually like the Skins! I'm not a Steve Young or a cumulative consensus of the talent, expertise, and opinion here, but frankly I don't see his potential that apparently everyone else does, but then again, I've been told I need some glasses now before I get my drivers license renewed again!!!!! ;) :roll:bjornolf wrote:When including college, Jason Campbell has had 7 different coordinators and 7 different offensive systems to learn in 8 years.
