Checking in from the dump on the hump w here vibes to you are going nuts with energy!!!!! The feeding tube will help him get his strength back and he'll recover so much more quickly. Just make sure he cooperates with getting upright and moving ASAP. Gotta keep those lungs clear. Sounds like he's still full of vinegar. That must be where you get it!

Hugs to all of you. It's gonna be okay. You'll see.

Earl (that's my grandpa's name) had his feeding tube put in on Tuesday. It is the external, abdomen-mounted one, so he will still be able to enjoy what they now call "pleasure food" (albeit from a severely limited list of allowed foods) if/when he wants to. I went to see him yesterday, and he was in much better spirits (this according to my dad and uncle, as well as my own observation). He still looks quite small and frail, but his coloration was much better, and he seemed to be more encouraged about how things are going. I took him my picture with Alex Trebek from the Jeopardy! set, which he loved...bragging on my brother and me (his only two grandchildren) is apparently the thing that brings him the most joy these days.
I still have no idea when (or if) he'll get out of the woods, but I think his chances have at least been enhanced with this. I also had the chance to speak to Dad, and he and his brother have at least begun to allow themselves to consider the possibility that Earl may not pull through (something I was beginning to worry they hadn't/wouldn't do).
It was really hard being in the care facility (I stayed about an hour). It's just an uncomfortable place that, for lack of a more artful way of saying it, kind of gives me the willies. I would prefer not to spend a great deal of time there, but I would rather hang out with Earl than avoid the discomfort of the place.
Thanks again to everyone for your concern and well wishes. :ymhug:

I understand the 'willies' completely. Even the best of facilities like can be sad and hopeless places. Spent too much time in them with my grandmother and mother in law.

It is also good that your father is at least beginning to see that he might not recover. I know my Mother came to that realization about my grandmother (her mom) long after my uncle and I had.

If I may suggest getting him out of the room (even in a wheelchair) and outside will do you both a world of good. It is an excellent sign that he seems to be in better spirits. Take your cue from him. Both my grandmother and MIL reached a point where they were clearly ready to go. Your grandfather obviously isn't there. As long as he finds some joy in life, celebrate it...spend time with him ...remember with him....you won't be sorry.

Vibes for you, Earl and the rest of the family!

Wilson - I just found this in my attempts to catch up with all the threads I missed! I am sending vibes and prayers from VA for your grandfather, your family and yourself as I know this must be very hard for you! I would like to hear about how Earl is doing with the feeding tube now as you see fit! :ympray: :ympray: :ympray: :ympray:

Just checking in on you again. I hope your grandfather is comfortable and that you and your family have plenty of chances to visit and help each other deal with it all. It's not an easy time, I know. And yet, using this time to strengthen family ties and remind yourselves of all you mean to each other is invaluable. I get the feeling that that is your grandpa's legacy to all of you who love him.

Considerably better. I went to see him on Saturday morning and was very pleased to see him up and sitting in a chair instead of just lying in bed. He has put on a bit of weight, and specifically told me he's feeling much improved. Still skinny as hell, but his appearance continues to improve. The man battles on.
Thanks very much for asking, Tilly.

Wilson, thanks for the update. Glad to hear that your grandfather's health is improving! Renewed vibes are headed his way for continued improvement.
