Re: Milestones
Post 1790: Congress moves to Philly. SCOTUS meets for the first time, and the US justice system starts dying. ;) First State of the Union Address. Ben Franklin dies.

Re: Milestones
Post 1792: US Mint is formed, allowing presidents to print money when times are bad. ;) Washington uses veto for the first time. I'm gonna leave that one alone. Raleigh is chartered to be new capital of NC. Guillotine first used in France. I'm sure a lot of people were REAL happy about that in the following years. White House corner stone is laid. When Bill Clinton read that, he misunderstood the meaning of the word "is". And "laid". ;) Kentucky becomes 15th state, damning college basketball forever. Columbus Day is first celebrating, making workers everywhere cheer for an extra day off, making Native Americans everywhere weep bitterly.

Re: Milestones
I was gonna stop there, but I found one for Colchar:
1793: Simcoe decides to build Toronto after sailing into the bay.
Marie Antoinette has her run-in with the aforementioned guillotine. Washington lays cornerstone for capitol building. Eli Whitney applies for his cotton gin patent.

That's not exactly how, or when, it happened but I appreciate being included.

ArkieDukie wrote:Totally random question: Dumbledore's phoenix in the HP books is named Fawkes. Would this be where J. K. Rowling got the name?wilson wrote:1605: Guy Fawkes' infamous Gunpowder Plot, in which he and his conspirators planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament, assassinate King James, abduct the royal family, and induce broad-based rebellion, is thwarted. The plot makes freedom of religion for English Catholics even more unthinkable than it had previously been and sparks a new wave of English patriotism. Today, Guy Fawkes day, November 5, is celebrated as an occasion of deliverance of the crown and the Protestant nation.
Most likely.

Oops, I was thinking of 12 ounces, as in standard bottles of beer  . Good catch. But, then again, I might do anything for pastrami and/or corned beef, even altering the standards for weights and measures.wilson wrote:Hey, what are you trying to pull? A pound and a half is 24 ounces. 18 ounces is but 1.125 pounds. You schemer.devildeac wrote:Or perhaps a pound and 1/2 (18 ounces ;) ) of pastrami or corned beef?

A most excellent commemorative.colchar wrote:Since this my millennial post I would like to dedicate it to the founding of L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada which was the first European settlement in North America. Although the exact date of its founding is debated by academics there is a large school of thought that argues that it was founded in 1000 A.D. which is good enough for me and this post!

AD 391: Emperor Theodosius puts the final touches on making Christianity the official religion of Rome by disbanding the last vestiges of the Roman religions, including closing down the Temple of Vesta and extinguishing the eternal fire, as well as banning taking the auspices.
