Dukies in the NFL update

Post by CameronBornAndBred » August 16th, 2009, 12:50 pm

Goduke.com has this article about the 8 players Duke has in the NFL now. It sounds like Tauiliili had a hell of a debut!

Great effort against a Minnesota team on the rise.

A nice read...thanks for passing it along. Most impressive to me is Patrick Bailey's award as the Steelers' Rookie of the Year during their Super Bowl campaign last year.

Patrick was in Cameron with Coach Cutcliffe for a b'ball game soon after the Super Bowl last season and was recognized before the home crowd. He's one more Dukie who's making us all proud of what he's accomplishing in life after Duke.

Mike Tauiliili is currently in the Ind-Det game. #59 LB for Indy.

Yup. He's listed as 4th on the depth chart at ESPN at MLB for Indy. I hope these plays help him stick around. The guy was money tackling some very good ACC talent these past four years.

I looked him up earlier in anticipation of the game today, here is what scout.com has to say (in this article about 5 rookies to watch)
Mike Tauiliili: He would appear to be the undrafted rookie linebacker that does not make the roster, as Ramon Humber has been slightly better and more effective, both on defense and special teams.

There are only so many slots available and, historically, Indianapolis has not kept many linebackers to run with the final 53. Injuries were an issue last year at the position, so they may keep seven players instead of six, as Hartz suggests in his article, but that still leaves Tauiliili on the wrong side of a talent squeeze.

The battle for that last linebacker spot is not lost yet. Tauiliili and Freddy Keiaho still have just as good a shot at securing the job as Humber. It will be important for Tauiliili to outperform, outhustle, and outhit his competition in order to make a favorable impression on the Indianapolis staff.

Even if he doesn't secure a spot on the depth chart with the Colts, the skills he displays on Saturday and in the final preseason game will be noticed by other teams in the league -- other Cover 2 teams, such as the Lions, in particular.
I'd say he made himself known to both teams today.

Another mention after making big special teams play. He's getting some great props today.

And he only had 15 minutes to do it. Pretty sweet.
