Re: Ymm, Beer!
Escape Sour IPA-Forgotten Road Ales, “A collaboration with our friends at Casita Brewing Company”
Forgotten Roads is in Graham and Casita is in Wilson, so I’m surrounded by local.
Credit-pilferage for housesitting for an hour; thanks!
Style-fruited sour IPA
Format-pint can
Stemware-large wine glass
Appearance-canned pineapple juice; modest meringue foamage
Nose-pineapple and coconut
Mouthfeel-juicy and tart
Tastes-pineapple, Coco Lopez cream of coconut and some lemon/lime
Adjuncts-pineapple, coconut and lactose
Hops-Sabro
IBU-N/A but I’d guess high 30s but tour to tell as it’s a sour but also an IPA
ABV-6.4%
Overall impression-quality stuff here from a relatively new NC brewery and a known quantity; no disappointment here
Ymm, Beer rating-low cat 3; checks all the boxes in a beer/style I would imagine is not easy to brew

Re: Ymm, Beer!
Brian’s Barrel Blends 2022 No. 16-Hardywood Park Craft Brewery
Local for you know who…
Credit-yet another round of applause @wbmcards88 for his campout at the winter warehouse sale
Style-blend; see below
Format-ya can likely guess
Stemware-Hardywood teku
Good looks-dark brown and cloudy with 4 bubbles
Nose-dark. dried fruits and bourbons
Mouthfeel-alluring
Tastes-figs, dates, dark cherries, bourbon, apples and orange liqueur
Beers and barrels-wheatwine from brandy barrels (Laird’s Apple Brandy?) and Belgian style quad from bourbon casks
IBU-19
ABV-10%
Overall impression-fantastic combination; tasted/felt more like about a 13+% brew
Ymm, Beer rating-mid cat 3; I’d take a case of this one

Re: Ymm, Beer!
Staying in the “Family Tree” here…
Brian’s Barrel Blends 2022 No. 15-Hardywood Park Craft Brewery
Credit-more accolades @wbmcards88 for this selection
Style-blend; more below
Format-maybe a stubbie; shared, I think one night last week
Appearance-cloudy, medium amber with scant effervescence
Nose-bourbon and gin
Mouthfeel-pillowy
Tastes-bourbon, orange liqueur, hint of smoke and juniper/gin
Beers and barrels but no polkas-wheatwine from Old Fitzgerald bourbon storage units and a smoked German rauchbier from Caledonia Spirits Tom Cat gin barrels
IBU-18
ABV-10.6%
Overall impression-a bit lighter than the wheatwine/quad combo but almost as tasty
Ymm, Beer rating-low cat 3 is no disgrace and the rauchbier/smoke is not a deterrant; would most certainly sip again and, IIRC, there may be another on the way in the form of a 750 ml bottle that’ll set me back about $8 ; yes, please!!

Re: Ymm, Beer!
KC ain’t local for most of us.
Chocolate Ale-Boulevard Brewing Company, collaboration with Christopher Elbow (no, it really says that on the label )
Credit-thanks @nrrrrvous for not liking this and gifting to me
Style-flavored ale; looks like an attractive blonde to me :face_with_peeking_eye:
Format-12 ounce bottle shared 3 ways
Stemware-cute mini snifters
Appearance-as in photo; thin, off white foam
Nose-white chocolate and vanilla
Mouthfeel-soft
Tastes-followed the nose
Grains-Pale malt and Cara wheat
Hops-Columbus and Cascade
Adjuncts-cacao nibs and ‘nilla extract
IBU-11
ABV-8.7%
Overall impression-a rather pleasant dessert starter
Ymm, Beer rating-anticipated a high cat 2 but I’m comfy with a low cat 3; reminded me a bit of Sam Adams Chocolate Bock

To close out Wednesday night:
Parallassein-Olde Hickory Brewery
Local it is!
Credit-a whim purchase from Bottle Revolution late summer, 2022 after a tap takeover; @fuse amd @wbmcards88 may have gotten singles, too
Style-barleywine aged 299 weeks in port wine barrels
Format-12 ounce bottle, shared 3 ways
Freshie info: Bottled on 6/22/2022
Stemware-rinsed and dried mini snifters
Appearance-ruby mud; no head
Nose-red wine soaked leather
Mouthfeel-wet leather
Tastes-cherries, tobacco, tannins, port, wet leather
IBU-N/A but gotta be at least 40
ABV-15%, the NC legal limit
Overall impression-a fascinating combination of tastes
Ymm, Beer rating-low cat 3; BBA barleywines are more palate pleasing but very happy to try a new twist

Re: Ymm, Beer!
Currently, the leader in the clubhouse for Beer of the Year 2023.
Straight Talk Vol. VIII-Hardywood Park Craft Brewery
Adopted local
Credit-you know who strikes again at the winter, 2023 warehouse sale; huuuuge thanks @wbmcards88 for queuing up, advancing , storage and delivery
Style-“single beer and barrel experience” (see below)
Format-stubbie, shared 3 ways but not quite equally
Stemware-mini snifters
Appearance-liquid fudge, onyx and no head
Mouthfeel-lubricious
Tastes-heavily laden dark chocolate fudge, dark caramel, black strap molasses
Barrels-double oaked Woodford Reserve for 46 months (no typo )
Adjunct-lactose (base beer is an imperial milk stout, guessing Cassowary)
IBU-N/A but probably 50s
ABV-12.6% but sipped like 15%+
Overall impression-I’ve not had a better beer this year, yet, but will keep sipping
Ymm, Beer rating-front and center high cat 3; I’d say cat 4 but @admins tends to frown upon such claims/designations

Ideal beer for a hot summer day/night. Can't think of any Hardywood beer that I've reviewed unfavorably.

Re: Ymm, Beer!
From Thursday night:
Samael’s Oak Aged Ale-Avery Brewing Company
From their “this beer is no longer brewed” Demons of Ale series
Not. Local.
Credit-probably a Total Wine purchase in 2016
Style-^^^^
Format-12 ounce capped and foil sealed bottle; shared unequally 3 ways
Bottling info-May, 2015; Batch No. 11
Stemware-mini snifters
Appearance-clear, medium amber with 3 bubbles; the last ounce was muddy
Nose-brown sugar syrup and grain alcohol
Mouthfeel-a sweet alcohol burn
Tastes-brown sugar grain alcohol, wet oak, some vanilla and a hint of coconut
Adjunct-turbinado sugar
Aging-American oak chips
IBU-N/A but guessing low 30s
ABV-14.6% (@wbmcards88 approved ) but felt more like a 17+% DFH 120 on the palate
Overall impression-truly a “hot” beer
Ymm, Beer rating-low cat 3; happy to have saved and shared for the experience/tasting; Batch No. 12 was apparently the last brewing (Avery Brewing Kills Off Six of Its Acclaimed Demons and Dictators Beers | Westword)

Re: Ymm, Beer!
Ryeway to Heaven-Revolution Brewing
Local when bought in March on an aeroplane trip to Chicago and store by our daughter and her husband without any on-site evaporation
Credit-a keen eye, a few surplus to be spent and thirst
Style-rye/BBA rye ale, technically a "ryewine,’ I guess
Format-12 ounce can, not shared (keep reading)
Recency data-FILLED OCT/27/2022 07:31:16
Stemware-Founders snifter
Appearance-medium dark amber; maybe 4 bubbles
Nose-bourbon, rye and caramel
Mouthfeel-warm and sultry
Tastes-bourbon, wet rye bread, gobs of dark caramel, some leather and dark, dried fruits
Adjuncts-60% rye grain bill
IBU-25
ABV-15% (approved and likely previously reviewed by @wbmcards88 )
Overall impression-haven’t had any of the Boulevard Rye (on Rye on Rye on Rye) ales in a year, maybe two, but this is quite comparable
Ymm, Beer rating-solid mid cat 3; happy to have 3 more, IIRC, may use one or two as trade bait…

Re: Ymm, Beer!
Tampa Bay Beer Week Thursday-Cigar City Brewing
Local for the Queen Victoria guy
Credit-huuuuge thanks @TeacherTom for procuring
Style-blended ale not from Brian; see below
Format-500 ml bottle shared not quite equally among 3 people
Stemware-mini snifters
Appearance-decidedly dark brown; thin tan head
Nose-booze and dark fruits
Mouthfeel-seductive
Tastes-really complex with bourbon, rum, dark cherries and other assorted dried fruits, dark chocolate and caramel, dark brown sugar and some sautéed apples
Beers and barrels-imperial brown ale from cherry brandy barrels, old ale out of coconut rum barrels and imperial stout that exited apple brandy barrels
IBU-N/A but probably low 30s
ABV-16.5% (yo, ho, ho and a bottle of…)
Overall impression-truly rivaled some of Brian’s Blends
Ymm, Beer rating-mid/upper cat 3; amazing zipper; not quite a beer if the year nominee but close

Saison Blanc 2023-Brewery Bhavana
We live here=local
Credit-needed share and/or trader beers
Style-“wine barrel aged farmhouse ale” (not quite true; keep reading)
Format-pint can, shared two ways
Stemware-pictured
Appearance-pictured
Nose-white wine and fruit punch
Mouthfeel-sour
Tastes-Sour Patch Kids fruit punch and wine, wood, lemons and limes
Adjuncts-guava, mango, grapefruit zest, passionfruit and peaches
Barrels-“single use white wine”
IBU-guessing under 10
ABV-6.6%
Overall impression-mislabeled or farmhouse ale aged to sourness; you be the judge
Ymm, Beer rating-low cat 3; would pair nicely with sweet/sour dishes; quite intriguing and happy to have 3 more to share/trade
