Chili Cookoff

Post by Miles » August 17th, 2009, 9:14 am

Kelly and I had a long ride home from the DBAP due to torrential down-pours. Once we got home, we decided that it was gonna be chili night. So we headed to the store, picked up some ingredients and headed home; each of us to prepare our own pot of chili. The whole event, both of us cooking two very different chilis at the same time reminded me of the Chili Cookoff and it inspired me to enter next years competition. I know it's a long way out but I'm just so excited and thought I'd post here to see if anyone might be interested in helping.

The cookoff is held in Havelock (where I grew up) during the month of October.
I'm looking for a few people that might be interested in helping around the chili booth. I'll need people to take tickets, serve chili, coax people into our booth, set up, tear down, etc.
I'm also gonna have to figure out signage and booth graphics. So I'd love ideas on a theme, team name, etc.
I might need sponsorship help but I have over a year to save up so I'm not too worried at this point.

In the meantime, I'm going to buy an outdoor gas burner and a giant pot so I can try making large batches of chili and see how they come out. Maybe I'll bring some chili to the Brunchgates and y'all can help me out by sampling and offering suggestions.

There are Brunchgates on Oct. 3rd and 24th. Avoid those weekends and you might have some takers! Or, just bring the chili with you to Brunchgate!

I'd love to help, and I'm only 15 minutes away!
As long as it's not a brunchgate weekend, I'll be there. If there is a game being played during the event, a tv is required also!

This year the Cookoff is October 17th. Not sure about next year but we have some time. I'll see if I can get the organizers to respect the Duke Football Schedule. :-D
You can be sure that I'll be crossing my fingers though because I would love the help!

Good news, no Duke game that weekend! Bad news is hopefully I'll be in DC, at least that morning. Maybe I'll make it back in time.

Have to reiterate. I'm entering NEXT YEAR, not this year. Just not going to be able to put together the funds, crew, time off from work, etc. to make it this year. So I have about a year to work on the recipe. :-)

I was thinking of trying it out at one or two of this year's brunchgates. How early do people get there?

Well, there's no Duke Football but there IS Duke Basketball. Saturday is the Blue White game. And Friday night I'll be at Avery High School (at the other end of the state) watching my son in laws HS marching band in their football game. So I won't make the chili cook off.

Okay folks, let me make sure I'm clear. I AM NOT ENTERING THIS YEAR.

I AM ENTERING NEXT YEAR

Of course, it will be around the same time as this year's event so some of the same concerns will be in effect. I'll just be crossing my fingers that everyone's schedule lines up and folks can make it. So moving on.

Help me come up with a theme or team name.

They're doing the blue-white on a non football day? That sucks!

Right up there with another new arrangement for this football season, the carolina game being only the fourth to last of the year. Terrible.

For one thing, they wanted the State - carolina game to end the season. When we win the conference championship this year, they'll be sorry they did that!

Yeah! They better switch it back after that happens, and after State crushes UNC.
I didn't know the ACC was supposed to be this good, 4 preseason top 20 teams.

Okay so, it looks like there is a cook-off in South Carolina on April 17th. I'm thinking of entering this competition so that I get my feet wet. That way, when I roll up into my home town I'm not a rookie.

Now all I need are ideas for the team/theme. Any suggestions?
