Prim-Upland Brewing Company

Local from the land of davec

Credit-another trader from Dark Lord davec; thanks!!
Style-barrel aged fruited sour
Format-500 ml bottle, half with dinner, half at bedtime
Bottle date-APR 21
Batch No-H 21
Stemware-Gouden Carolus chalice
Appearance-cloudy lavender ; pale purple fizziness
Nose-plum
Mouthfeel-puckery
Tastes-unsweetened lemon/limeade; plum, white wine, spice
Yeast-Lambic blend Belgian style ale strain, Sherry strain, two Brettanomyces strains, Lactobacillus and Pediococcus (wow!)
Malt-Pale, Pilsner, raw white wheat, Bonlander Munich
Hops-aged German spalt
Adjuncts-plum and cardamon
Barrels-unspecified but I’ll guess chardonnay

(interruption-I don’t see any chit listed anywhere)

IBU-10
ABV-5.5% on bottle, 6% on their website and website (not 15%+ here!!)
Overall impression-an excellent sour; I could not have named cardamon as the spice had I not read the brewer’s notes; Mrs dd took 2 sips and made a funny face at which I politely smiled as it automatically meant more for me
Ymm, Beer rating-mid cat 3; reminded me a lot of the Wicked Weed plum sour that mattman traded me several years ago; high quality stuff

Oak & Rosé-Upland Brewing Company

Local again for the purchasing agent and delivery guy.

Credit-can I get another Hell, Yea for davec?

Bottle date-4/17/19 (had a few doubts but keep reading…)
Batch No.-M19
Stemware-Gouden Carolus chalice
Appearance-almost clear apple/cherry cider; thin rim of bubbles
Nose-apple cider berry vinegar
Mouthfeel-fruity and sour
Tastes-sour cherries and raspberries, apple cider vinegar, lemon/lime juice and Zinfandel
Adjuncts-Chambourcin grapes (Chambourcin is a is a French-American hybrid grape variety)
Yeast-Lambic blend
Malts-Pale, Pilsner, Raw White Wheat, Bonlander Munich
Hops-aged German Spalt
IBU-8
ABV-5.8% on the label but 7% on their website and 6% Untappd :man_facepalming:
Overall impression-if I had to side by side this with a Rodenbach product, I’m not sure I could tell the difference and that’s about as high as the praise gets; a fabulous sour
Ymm, Beer rating-easy mid cat 3; I could sip this many, many more times; thanks!!!

Sorry, no beer photos :kissing_closed_eyes:

Local for davec.

Balance of Sour-Taxman Brewing Company

IBU-15
ABV-6.5%
Overall impression-high quality product very comparable to a Belgian sour
Ymm, Beerrating-low/mid cat 3; I liked the winey/grapey flavors of the Oak and Rose from Upland a shade better but this was excellent and I’d likely have trouble differentiating this from a classic Rodenbach in a side by side; more high praise

Permanent Crease-New Anthem Beer Project

The NC coast is local

Credit-shamelessly stolen from older daughter and her husband’s beer fridge for dog sitting fees; thanks!!
Style-hazy IPA (or DIPA?)
Format-pint can
Dots on bottom of can-22 004 (shrugs)
Stemware-16 ounce wine glass (no wonder a bottle of wine only lasts 1.5 days for Mrs. dd; oops)
Appearance-hazy citrus juice
Nose-grapefruit and resin
Mouthfeel-some juice, some rind
Tastes-grapefruit juice and rind, some resin/pine, splash of guava
Hops-Simcoe, Citra and Centennial
IBU-“no IBU” but I’ll guess low 40s
ABV-7.7% (IPA or DIPA)
Overall impression-I could probably do without the Centennial hops but still appreciate the high quality
Ymm, Beer rating-low cat 3; I prefer the NEIPA/NEDIPA a tad more with the juicy fruity hops and less so the “C” hops like Centennial, Cascade, Chinook and Columbus

Speaking of thieves…

Double Universe-Resident Culture Brewing Company

Charlotte brewery; close enough.

Credit-I dog sit, I get a couple beers out of the deal and no one says a word
Style-hazy DIPA, aka NEDIPA
Format-pint can
Recency bias-{shrugs}
Stemware- I greatly enjoy sipping IPAs and DIPAs out of our bigass wine glasses
Appearance-pineapple juice; thick, modest foam
Aromas-pineapple OJ
Mouthfeel-fresh squeezed
Tastes-crushed pineapple, blenderized fresh OJ, some mango and peach
Hops-“100% hand selected Citra”:
IBU-“no IBU” :innocent:  :innocent:  :innocent: but likely close to 40
ABV-8.2%
Overall impression-had to be fresh stuff as it was almost pulpy, very citrusy juicy
Ymm, Beer rating-mid cat 3; rivals our instate #fanboi faves, New Anthem and Burial; find and buy some-the whole damn 4 pack!!

Barrel Aged Blot Out the Sun-Three Floyds Brewing

A “short” drive to local for davec

Credit-All hail davec; thanks!!
Style-BBA imperial stout
Format-12 ounce bottle, divided over 2 nights (see ABV )
Etchings on base of bottle-02121303373B
Stemware-mini snifter (not related to mini Ditka)
Appearance-liquid bituminous; extremely slender tan head
Nose-rye whiskey and dark chocolate
Mouthfeel-seductive
Tastes-some must, whiskey, wood char, black strap molasses, burnt caramel, earthy
IBU-97 (no typo :dotted_line_face:)
ABV-13.4% (again, no typo )
Overall impression-matches up with their slogan, " “It’s Not Normal” with mildly offcenter tastes but with the final product being quite the sipper
Ymm, Beer rating-low/mid cat 3; mustiness drops the rating a bit but the complexity of this is excellent; more than delighted this legendary FFF brew was included in davec’s goodie box

Almost completely evaporated:

Double Carolina Cobble Cherry-Divine Barrel Brewing

Even thought the hor-nots and panthers have teams there, it’s still local

Credit-another dog sitting fee; thanks, older daughter!
Style-fruited imperial Berliner weisse milkshake
Format-pint cam, err, can
Bottom of cylinder info-Canned on 12/22/21 11:32
Stemware-large wine glass
Appearance-see photo; modest chunk on close inspection; large fizzy head (ruh roh) but gone in 54 seconds
Nose-power of suggestion says cherry cobbler
Mouthfeel-mildly sour, yet sweet
Tastes-slightly sour cherry pie with a splash of cream
Adjuncts-double cherries, Madagascar vanilla, cinnamon, graham crackers and lactose
IBU-“no IBU” and they’re close on this one with my guess about 10
ABV-8% ()
Overall impression-not quite Veil beer smoothie Berliner weisse/sour IPA quality but damned close
Ymm, Beer rating-low/mid cat 3; I’d steal another of these from our dear daughter and if you see a can or four, pull out your credit card

Recently disappeared:

Sour Boysenberry Plum-Edmund’s Oast Brewing Company

Not local. Wrong state.

Credit-another dog sitting beer fee; thanks, local daughter!!
Style-ummm…
Format-pint can
Bottom of can info-1447 1449 12/21/21
Stemware-same old boring large wine glass
Appearance-gorgeous
Nose-berries
Mouthfeel-fruity and sour
Tastes-berries, lemon/lime
Adjuncts-might be some boysenberry and plum here; no marionberries :kissing:
IBU-“no IBU” is a reasonable statement but probably <10
ABV-6.5%
Overall impression-wonderful creation; soft, fruity with a hint of pucker
Ymm, Beer rating-low/mid cat 3; not quite Veil quality but pretty close; Ida never stolen this if TW hadn’t reminded me what a good brewery this is

With a few drops left in the snifter, I present:

Crushing Mass-Three Floyds Brewing

Local for the buying/delivery guy

Credit-bows humbly to davec for another gem; thanks!!
Style-BBA coffee imperial stout
Format-3/4 pint bottle, divided over 2 nights (keep reading…)
Glass etchings on the base-021223054973A
Stemware-mini snifter last pm, adult snifter tonight
Appearance-bituminous with a few tan bubbles
Nose-espresso
Mouthfeel-libidinous
Tastes-cold brew espresso with a generous shot of bourbon, drizzled with molasses, dark caramel syrup and fudge sauce
IBU-26 (I’d have guessed 50+)
ABV-15.1% (minimally boozy until about 30 minutes later…)
Overall impression-if you like cold espresso and bourbon, you’d love this
Ymm, Beer rating-mid cat 3; this is excellent stuff and a FFF product I’ve never heard of until davec’s delivery

From last PM.

NC coast=local

Credit-available, affordable, appetizing, needed traders for davec, very low on “platform” beers, thirsty, #fanboi
Style-hazy west coast DIPA
Format-pint can
Dots on bottom-22 095; and, thanks to mattman’s edjumacation that NA uses the Julian calendar to freshness date their brews, my higher math skillz figgered out this was brewed on April 5 so I bought it 10 days old!
Stemware-large wine glass
Appearance-white grapefruit juice; moderate foam
Nose-citrus pith and pine
Mouthfeel-mild to moderate bitterness
Tastes-lotsa pith and rind, pine, resin, OJ at the end
Hops-Centennial
Grains-Pale Malt and wheat
IBU-“no IBU” but likely about 50
ABV-8%
Overall impression-surprisingly good considering mattman “warned” me it was 100% Centennial hops, not one of my faves
Ymm, Beer rating-low cat 3; I’d bet some fake pie that mattman and RJ would rate this mid cat 3 as they both like Centennial hops; I’d rather have a DFH 90 Minute IIPA at 90 IBU and 9% ABV but gotta admit I rather enjoyed this

Shoot, I hope davec didn’t read this post…

Thought I’d reviewed this before but searched crazietalk and it appears I’m wrong again but never in doubt. I’m certain @fuse has reviewed it.

From Untappd which likely means lifted from Revolution’s website but I’m too damn lazy to check:

“A weaponized quantity of freshly roasted whole bean coffee from Dark Matter Coffee imbues our Deth’s Tar Barrel-Aged Imperial Oatmeal Stout with assertive coffee aromatics without overshadowing the base beer on the palate. Pair with rich food or enjoy on its own. Keep cold. Enjoy now. We mean it.”

Café Deth-Revolution Brewing

Davec braving local, state and federal alcohol laws and buying “foreign” goods but I’ll still call it local as we’ll be several miles from revbrew.com sometime tomorrow.

Credit-all hail davec, again and again!
Style-coffeed and BBA imperial oatmeal stout
Format-pint can; lethal if packaged in larger containers; sipped over about 90 minutes last pm
Dots on bottom of can-FILLED OCT/06/2021 08:12:35
Stemware-snifter
Appearance-Texas crude
Nose-booze and espresso
Mouthfeel-Oh. So. Soft.
Tastes-espresso and bourbon, more espresso and bourbon, black strap molasses, vanilla, oak, char
Adjuncts-espresso and oats
IBU-35; I’d have thought 50s
ABV-14.8% (should be marked more clearly and in a bigger font )
Overall impression-simply amazing blending
Ymm, Beer rating-top shelf cat 3; not sure which of the Deth variants I like best, Cherries, regular or this one; maybe I’ll get so sample more this winter

Deth’s Tar-Revolution Brewing

Nearby for the buying guy

Credit-last trader from davec except for the Dark Lord I’m saving; thanks!!
Style-BBA oatmeal imperial stout
Format-12 ounce can because a pint can might be lethal
Inkage on bottom of can-FILLED OCT/04/2021 15:07:52
Stemware-snifter
Appearance-Brent crude
Nose-bourbon and dark chocolate
Mouthfeel-seductive
Tastes-dark chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, burnt dark caramel, wood
Adjuncts-flaked and malted oats (mattman’ll 'splain this)
IBU-35 but I’d have guessed 50s
ABV-14.8%
Overall impression-simply outstanding
Ymm, Beer rating-upper tier cat 3; if you’re in the Chicago area on Black Friday, I think this stuff is about $7/can. If any is still available before Christmas, it’s about $10/can. Worth every damn cent.

Edit: I hope davec didn’t run afoul of any state officials for his out of state purchases

Drunken Vigils-Southern Pines Brewing Company

close to local

Credit-the new owner (well, for about 5 years) of the original Bottle Revolution held back a can for me a couple months ago
Style-BBA flavored imperial stout
Format-pint can; shared Friday night
Stemware-snifters
Appearance-bituminous; thin, tan head
Nose-bourbon and dark chocolate
Mouthfeel-oh, so sleek
Tastes-semi sweet chocolate, bourbon, dark fruits, espresso, molasses, burnt caramel, mild/moderate roasty bitterness and more bourbon
Adjuncts-oats, cacao, coffee
IBU-73
ABV-12.4% and really, really dangerous
Overall impression-stunning
Ymm, Beer rating-front, center and top shelf cat 3; our son liked this better than the Cafe De Olla BCS and I can't really argue with him at 1/3 the cost
From last PM:

Drunken Vigils-Southern Pines Brewing Company

Yea, local.

Credti-TW traded a couple cans of this and their BBA German Chocolate Cake; many thanks!!
Style-BBA flavored oatmeal imperial stout
Format-pint can, shared, but not quite equally (keep reading…)
Printed stuff, bottom of can-Canned on 12/20/21
Stemware-small wine glasses
Appearance-North Sea crude
Nose-chocolate, bourbon and coffee
Mouthfeel-obscenely smooth
Tastes-dark chocolate covered raisins, bourbon, dark roast coffee, dark caramel, wood char
Adjuncts-Ecuadorian cacao, local roast
Grains-oats and “traditional floor malted grains”
IBU-73
ABV-14.9% (the bar was raised from the 2020 version; :open_mouth:)
Overall impression-outrageously sippable and amazingly constructed/blended
Ymm, Beer rating-sits next to its 2020 brother on the top shelf cat 3; Bottle Rev may have some left on the shelf…

Barrel Aged Behemoth-Three Floyds Brewing

“It’s not normal” but it is/was local.

Credit-trader from younger son in law last week; thanks!
Style-BBA American barleywine
Format-12 ounce bottle, shared 2.1 ways last PM
Etchings on bottle base-sorry, didn’t copy and bottle is long gone
Stemware-small wine glasses
Appearance-light brown mud with a bit of foam
Nose-booze and wet leather
Mouthfeel-bordering on bracing
Tastes-an unusual bourbony flavor, wet leather, tobacco, hints of vanilla and coconut in a wet oak vessel
IBU-45 (Untappd sits upon a Throne of Lies as this is an American barleywine and the IBUs taste/feel like 70-80 range
ABV-13.6% (not hidden; this monster is strong)
Overall impression-the BBA mutes the expected harshness of the style; English barleywines are much more malt forward, smoother and almost cloying, especially if the ABV is this high
Ymm, Beer rating-low cat 3; delighted anytime I can procure a FFF product, especially one of the less common ones and this may have been a brewery only offering

Tastes-Harry and David chocolate covered blueberries and dark caramel
Adjuncts-blueberries, milk chocolate/cocoa, lactose
Grains-“English barley malt”
Hops-German Ariana (new to me)
IBU-“no IBU” but I’ll guess about 40
ABV-5%
Overall impression-very favorable first tasting; younger daughter ranked it below Raspberry Tart and Serendipity of her favorite NG fruit beers (not sure how many she’s had)
Ymm, Beer rating-mid cat 3; no barrel aging and low ABV but this is a wonderful sipper

Beer cocktail from last PM:

Balance of Sour from Taxman and Raspberry Tart from New Glarus

Local x2

Credit-more accolades for davec and a single clap for me for saving my last Raspberry Tart to share with Mrs. dd and invent another beer cocktail
Style-y’all know
Format-500 ml Taxman and 12 ounces New Glarus with most of the sour for me and most of the NG for my wife (because that’s the way it works in our house :face_with_hand_over_mouth:)
Cups-8 ounce hotel plastic  (2 ounces of Balance of Sour and 2 ounces of Raspberry Tart, shared
Appearance-cloudy burgundy with a quickly disappearing pinkish, bubbly head
Mouthfeel-sweet and sour
Tastes-a raspberry sour with a splash of lemon/limeade and hints of apple cider vinegar
IBU-maybe 20?
Overall impression-helluva way to “tame” a Belgian style sour
Ymm, Beer rating-mid, maybe upper cat 3; an absolutely delightful sweet and sour ale/cocktail; TW might even be able to make this a cat 4 concoction with a splash or three of his grandma’s apple vodka :muscle: :muscle:

ABV-10.4%

Ymm, Beer rating-low/mid cat 3; not quite as good as the recent Hardywood monsters of 12-13%+ but I’m delighted to have 3 more cans

An actual review; from last pm:

Richard Flare Chest Chop-Divine Barrel Brewing

Credit-device rep’s treat; thanks!
Style-American pale ale
Format-draft
Cupathy-8 ounce designer plastic
Appearance-pretty clean amber/bronze; 2 mm off white foam
Nose-weed and grapefruit
Mouthfeel-dank and bitter
Tastes-grapefruit, pine, cannabis, hint of caramel
Hosp-Simcoe
IBU-56; a bit high for a pale ale but not surprising
ABV-5.8%
Overall impression-nice pairing with a slice of New Yorker pizza
Ymm, Beer rating-upper shelf cat 2; worth a half pint draft (free!) or a single can

Maximum Frequency-Heist Brewery

Credit-device rep treat; thanks!
Style-hazy/NEIPA
Format-from the tap
Container-8 ounce rinsed designer cup; plastic shortage claimed
Appearance-pretty close to photo
Nose-pineapple and orange fresh squeezed

Hops-(from Untappd) “Galaxy, Mosaic, and Rakau. All Mosaic on the first dry hop, blend of Galaxy, Strata, and Mosaic on the second dry hop”
IBU-“no IBU” getting real tiresome but I’ll venture <40
ABV-6.5%
Overall impression-another good pairing with pizza
Ymm, Beer rating-low cat 3; clearly better than Rick Flare (sic) but not quite Burial/NA zip code; never turn down a Heist beer

Strike Fire-Wise Man Brewing

336=local

Credit-device rep; thanks!
Style-west coast IPA
Format-spigot derived
Drinking vessel-same rinsed half pint plastic cup
Appearance-yellowish light amber; 2 mm offwhite head
Nose-citrus zest
Mouthfeel-resiny
Tastes-orange and grapefruit zest, pine, caramel
Grains-“all German”
Hops-Mosaic, Mandarina Bavaria, and Hallertau Blanc
IBU-73 (more than I’d have guessed)
ABV-6.6%
Overall impression-another good pizza paring
Ymm, Beer rating-high cat 2; the mild imbalance and west coast style drop my rating a bit but the hop combination sounded interesting and promising and I got less mandarin orange than I thought given the Mandarina Bavaria choice
