I was just about to post a thread about this. I guess today is truly the day the music died.

I've been meaning to pick up the guitar again (haven't played in years so will have to restart from scratch) and had decided to buy a Les Paul because holding that in my hands would've encouraged me to pick it up and practice.

Major bummer. He was an awesome guy, and music wouldn't be the same without him.

I know that notable people die with regularity, but it honestly does seem to me that this summer has brought an unusually high number of celebrity deaths.
Am I imagining this?

Not just this summer. Man, you can count them all the way back to January. I know this isn't a comprehensive list, but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head:

Karl Malden
Farrah Fawcett
Michael Jackson
David Carradine
Gayle Storm
Steve McNair
Les Paul
Mike Seeger
John Hughes
Gordon Walker
Walter Cronkite
Eunice Shriver
Harve Presnell
Billy Mays
Pat Hingel
Dom DeLuise
Jimmy Boyd
Natasha Richardson

Multiple actors from the Wizard of Oz died this year, too.

I don't know who most of the people on the following list are, but here's a pretty comprehensive one for this year: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_in_2009

Got to visit the nice folks at Gibson Guitars who make the Les Paul a while back. Some very interesting stuff, even if I'm tone deaf.

This is really sad news. What a genius!

I hope that some of the best guitarists do a tribute concert for him.

No Les Pauls were used in the recording of Freebird**. It wasn't until Steve Gaines joined the band that anyone used a Les Paul when playing it live.

**But a Gibson Explorer and a Gibson SG (which was originally called the Les Paul Second Generation until Les Paul saw it and demanded that his name be removed from the model) were used.

Actually, Once Bitten, Twice Shy was originally an Ian Hunter song. Great White covered it (and some others such as Substitute by The Who).

Have you heard the Neal McCoy song "Billy's got his beer goggles on"?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORqzaOFUCsg

It's pretty funny. "Free Bird" reminded me of it.
