Duke at Virginia Tech

Post by Bob Green » September 18th, 2019, 5:26 pm

Bye week is boring so I'll go ahead and start the Virginia Tech game thread. My expectation is Duke will be a 3 or 4 point favorite when odds are posted next week. Sagarin rankings have Duke at 52 and VT at 85. This is a winnable game and we need to win it.

I like us coming off a bye. Starting with 2012 (1st season of bowl eligibility under Coach Cucliffe), Duke is 6-3 coming off a bye:

2018: Beat Georgia Tech
2017: Loss to Army
2016: Loss to Georgia Tech
2015: Beat Virginia Tech
2014: Beat Georgia Tech, Beat Pittsburgh
2013: Beat Navy, Beat N.C. State
2012: Loss to Georgia Tech

Boring bye also = a healing week. I like how our byes are spread this year, and it's nice to have one right before conference play kicks in.
Of course VT has a bye, too, so I'm expecting a physical game from two teams itching for action. Thankfully, VT did NOT lose to Furman! I think the loss to ODU set them up to take out frustration on our guys last year, and came out the opposite...totally flat.

VT opened as a 7 points favorite but the line has moved down to VT -2.5 points.

Prediction: Duke 24, VT 14.

Being that both Furman and ODU put up 17 on VT, I'm giving us more in the BC range.
I'll say Duke 31, VT 24

Jim Sumner VT preview article at DBR:

WR Jake Bobo will play giving Quentin Harris another weapon. RB Brittain Brown will make the trip but there is no guarantee he will play. He is practicing but no contact yet. He is dealing with a shoulder issue.

Duke 45, Virginia Tech 10

No one saw that coming especially after going 3 and out on our first three possessions. Duke absolutely embarrassed VT in Blacksburg. B-)
