2019 Season (Practice started today)

Post by Bob Green » August 2nd, 2019, 5:31 pm

Here is an article from GoDuke on today's first practice:

http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml? ... EM_ID=4200

Money quote from Coach Cutcliffe:
The best part of our day was that for the third period we were able to line up and go full speed with teamwork and not bat an eye. That is a carryover of coaches and a carryover of the experience that people might not think we have.
Jim Sumner has promised some practice comments later today so I'm anxiously standing bye.

He won't be out for the season, maybe not even all of September. Not saying he will heal as fast as DJ, but it wouldn't seem unreasonable.

Another Jim Sumner article this one on the first scrimmage. These updates are pure gold:

https://www.dukebasketballreport.com/20 ... llace-wade

Defense is ahead of the offense. Key positive takeaway is some key injured players are back and looking good: Edgar Cerenord, Dylan Singleton, Mataeo Durant.

A couple of updates:

1. Back-up QB Gunnar Holmberg hurt his knee and requires surgery but it isn't a ligament. This leaves the team with only two scholarship QBs: Quentin Harris (#18) and Chris Katrenick (#15).

2. True freshman receiver Jalon Calhoun (#5) will replace Jake Bobo as starting slot receiver per Adam Rowe at 247Sports.

Per Steve Wiseman on Twitter:
Duke's David Cutcliffe said redshirt freshman QB Gunnar Holmberg had knee surgery today to repair cartilage damage. Surgeon found meniscus was only partially torn. Repair was made. No timetable for recovery. Long-term prognosis good.

Coach Cutcliffe comments on Friday's scrimmage:

https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/art ... 19697.html

1. Team stayed healthy! That's a good thing.
2. First offense scored 24 points.
3. First defense held second offense scoreless.
4. The team is getting better every time it takes to the practice field.

Coach Cutcliffe commented the kicking game is progressing but my interpretation of his facial expressions while making the comment is it isn't where it needs to be.

Senior starting linebacker Koby Quansah broke his thumb in practice Thursday, underwent surgery Friday and is out indefinitely. Hopefully, he is back 100% healthy no later than the Virginia Tech game. :(

I like this prediction from Pat Forde.
Notre Dame (4) will lose twice in November to unranked opponents. The Dash previously wrote about the difficulty the Fighting Irish have awaiting them with six games at an open-date disadvantage. That will catch up with them late in the season, when healthy and rested bodies are at a premium. Notre Dame has four straight November games at a rest/prep disadvantage: Virginia Tech, at Duke, Navy and Boston College. They’ll lose two of them — or perhaps one and the season finale at Stanford.
https://www.yahoo.com/sports/forde-yard ... 02253.html

Of course, Duke is not included in those predicted losses, since we'll be ranked by then. :D
