2019 Football Schedule

Post by CameronBornAndBred » January 16th, 2019, 2:48 pm

Aug. 31 vs. Alabama
(Chick-fi l-A Kickoff Game, Atlanta, Ga.)
Sept. 7 NORTH CAROLINA A&T
Sept. 14 at Middle Tennessee
Sept. 27 at Virginia Tech (Fri.)
Oct. 5 PITT
Oct. 12 GEORGIA TECH
Oct. 19 at Virginia
Oct. 26 at North Carolina
Nov. 9 NOTRE DAME .............ACC Network
Nov. 16 SYRACUSE
Nov. 23 at Wake Forest
Nov. 30 MIAMI

Only one home game in September, that's a welcome switch. Since that one game is against A&T, you can take it to the bank that it will be a night game. Three in November...football weather in Wallace Wade!

The schedule is tough so achieving six wins and bowl eligibility will be a challenge. I'll go with 2-2 in out-of-conference, although beating Notre Dame is not impossible, so we are going to need to win at least four conference games. In the Coach Cutcliffe era, Duke has won four or more ACC games three times: 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Two bye weeks this season: September 21 and November 2.

The two bye weeks make it convenient to split the season into three phases:

Phase I - the first three games. We need to go 2-1. Wins over NC A&T and at Middle Tenn are almost mandatory to achieve six wins and bowl eligibility.

Aug. 31 vs. Alabama
Sept. 7 NORTH CAROLINA A&T
Sept. 14 at Middle Tennessee

Phase II - the middle five games. This is where the rubber meets the road. A 3-2 record would go a long way toward bowl eligibility. Anything worse than 2-3 and we are in trouble.

Sept. 27 at Virginia Tech (Fri.)
Oct. 5 PITT
Oct. 12 GEORGIA TECH
Oct. 19 at Virginia
Oct. 26 at North Carolina

Phase III - the final four games. We will head into November needing a win (or two) to count to six. Hopefully it is only one because November will be brutal. There is no easy game although three games are at home against teams we beat the last time we played.

Nov. 9 NOTRE DAME
Nov. 16 SYRACUSE
Nov. 23 at Wake Forest
Nov. 30 MIAMI

It is way too early to start making predictions. Perhaps we pick up another recruit or a grad transfer but I'm not hearing any buzz now that OU QB Austin Kendall is headed to West Virginia. It sure would be nice to pick up a 5th year Offensive Tackle. Moreover, we need players to get healthy.

I love where the two byes are. Beating VT would be a momentum builder, and a matter of pride. To carry that victory back home before we face Pitt would be huge. Unfortunately, VT has a bye the same week, so they will get to prepare for us just as long. It will be the first conference game for both teams. Friday Night Fun in Blacksburg. Depending on how the team has looked leading into that one, it could be a fun game to make the trip for. (My parents live 30 min away.)

Having the second bye before Notre Dame is great, for all sorts of obvious reasons. They don't have a bye, in fact they will be playing the Hokies the previous week.

That got me thinking...Spring practice has to be starting in a few weeks, right?

Jim Sumner stated in one of his end of season articles that Spring practice would start in March but a specific date was not included.
