If I decide not to go the hybrid route I’m considering a Mazda CX-5. I do not drive often during the week and, like you, do not know if the hybrid is worth the extra expense. With that being said, most of my driving is in the city, so the improved gas mileage in the city would be good.

Our son and his wife bought a 2017 Forester (about 18 months old with about 20K miles) late last year in Columbus, OH, and have been very impressed so far with interior space, features, handling, MPG (about 26/32) and Subaru's reputation/value.

Our younger daughter and her husband bought a 2015 BMW (about 28K miles) 328 XDrive last month in Chicago. Came off a 3 year lease and got it for about $11,500 after it started about $17-18K and got the bumper-to-bumper warranty extended to 6 years/60K miles or something like that as part of the CPO deal along with several hundred $$ of other options like all-weather mats, car washes AND detail with all services. He walked out on the salesman twice on the last day of the month before buying . Rated about 26/34 MPG but premium fuel is suggested but he thinks it'll be fine on mid-grade.

Are you considering an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid? Might not be worth the $3-4K (or more ) for either feature, even if fossil fuel is $4/gal and you drive it >15K miles/year.

I’m looking at gas-electric. I really need to look at how many miles I drove last year. I don’t drive to work; I use public transportation instead. Assuming my calculations are correct, I’d need to average about 288 miles/week to get 15000 miles/year. I do not do that. Maybe I am better off keeping my expensive vehicle...

We have a 2006 Ford Freestyle with 140K miles (19/24 MPG), a 2010 Accord with 101K miles (22/31 MPG)and a 2012 Prius with 80K miles (48/51 MPG). All are paid for and in good running order and driving condition. The Ford is driven 90%+ on highway so decent MPG, Accord and Prius are mixed driving and average 26-28 and 46-48, respectively. All use regular unleaded fuel. We plan on driving them until they stop running. Sounds like your current car may be your best choice...

Can you lower your monthly payments with another car, say something with 0% interest for 36-60 months?

Have you considered a Civic or Corolla, either of which would be 30+ MPG in town or small hybrids like the Prius C or the new Honda Insight?

I think the whole premium fuel requirement for my current vehicle means that the hybrid might actually pay for itself in the long run. Need to test drive it and see how I like it.

Electric isn’t an option as I need longer range. Had a CRV before and liked it but it was not comfortable for long trips. My first car was a Corolla; it was great.

I re-visited the RAV4 hybrid info and learned it's now rated at 38/41 MPG, much higher than the old 31/34 MPG that I remembered, a very significant improvement. How about the Subaru Impreza at 28/38 MPG at several thousand less $$ than the RAV4 (~$19K vs ~$27K)?

We took the RAV4 to PA last September and I found it very comfortable - both driving and as a front and back seat passenger.

I finally retired my Mini Cooper after 250,000 miles and bought a used Ford Focus hatchback. It's a 2018 and had 16,000 miles on it. It had been a rental car and had been in a left front fender bender, but no no frame damage. Of course it had been repaired. It has all the bells and whistles and get s 38 mpg highway. I love it!

[rant] I’ve got a grammatical pet peeve, related to my previous post. Stupid autocorrect on my iPad automatically changes “its” to “it’s,” even when it’s not the correct form. Granted, the correction is very convenient when it’s the right form, but not so much when it isn’t. It’s no wonder grammatical mistakes are so rampant. Autocorrect adds some of them. [\rant]

Thanks, and agreed! For a while now I’ve wanted a Duke Blue car and a hybrid. I got them both in one vehicle!
I drove to AR for my twin nieces’ graduation. Got 39 mpg on my first tank of gas, and it only cost around $25 to fill it up. Didn’t have to fill up until partway into the return trip, and I’m still driving on that tank of gas. Yeah, I think I’ll like driving a hybrid. It’s fun to watch your mpg improve while sitting in traffic.
