Duke at Virginia Tech

Post by Bob Green » October 23rd, 2017, 3:44 pm

Duke is a 15.5 points underdog with the over/under set at 48. I'll take the under. Duke games have been under for the past six games due to our decent defense and broken offense.

Last game I said I'd be happy if we won by only one point. I wasn't happy.

This game I'll be happy if we don't get blown out like the Cheaters were.

I had a deputy who's a huge VT fan call me yesterday and say he needed to call me this week and not next week, after they blow us out.

I told him I expected them to win and would be happy with less than 59-7, and thanks for blowing out the sheep in that fashion. :9f:

While I cannot muster any significant optimism, after the stinkers the past four weeks, I do not believe VT will blow us out. We will keep it competitive much like we did against Miami and Florida State. The 31-6 final against Miami is skewed by the 14-0 4th Quarter.

The offense is going to have to play much, much better and the defense/special teams need to create some breaks...turnovers/big plays, etc...

I'm feeling better as the week progresses toward Saturday, and I'm sure I'll be convinced we are going to win by 7:15 pm right before kick-off, but even if VT whoops us in the end, I do not believe anything approaching 59-7 is in the cards.

I refrained from posting after the Pittsburgh loss because I knew I would not have been able to hold back. I would say this is the most frustrated I have been with our program since we blew the Coastal division title by losing back-to-back home games in 2014. In my opinion we have lost two games to teams that we were more talented than, (UVA, Pitt). Blowing a 10-point second half lead to a Pittsburgh team that is going through their worst year under Narduzzi was embarrassing. The offensive play calling was once again embarrassing. Barring us winning out, I do not see how Roper can be retained as the OC after how this first year and a half has gone.

Our defensive line coach, Ben Albert, is arguably the best positon assistant coach we have right now. He has completely revitalized a position group in a matter of a few months. Albert was not a "Cut" guy and came from one of the best defensive coaching staffs at Boston College. Cut needs to do the same with the offensive coordinator position this offseason. As Bob explained, we need an experienced offensive coordinator that has had success at the FBS level. This is a hire that does not come cheap. Cut needs to convince Kevin White to extend the budget or else I do not see how this team improves on the offensive side of the ball.

In regards to Virginia Tech.....

I do not see us getting blown out either. Our defense has continued to impress even during a four game skid. This feels like the game we will have a meaningless special teams touchdown. I do not think we will win this game, but I hope the fight is there.

The Turkeys play Miami after Duke. I am hoping beyond hope that they are looking past us some.

Coach Cutcliffe has to see this. Change has to happen.

The injury report is clean with Will Taylor Out for the Season as the only entry.

The weather report is calling for temps in the 40s and rain. Bad weather helps us I believe. It might force the OC's hand to call more running plays.

Multiple VT turnovers combined with Special Teams magic for Duke results in:

Duke: 21
VT: 17

There might have to be (needs?) to be a house-cleaning on the *ffensive side of the ball. Five TDs in five games (plus a pick 6)? Are you freaking kidding me? My fear is Cut won't do that (cough Ole Miss cough) and it'll then come down to an AD decision. And we all know how that ended at Ole Miss.

AD Kevin White might have a tough situation on his hands in the off season. I see this as an either or situation.

Either, Coach Cutcliffe makes wholesale changes on the offensive staff. Zac Roper, Jeff Faris and Marcus Johnson are all seating on very hot seats. Or, Kevin White makes a change at the top.

Yes this sounds absolutely ridiculous. Coach Cutcliffe has been and probably will continue to be the perfect fit for Duke but the program is regressing so change is inevitable. Either Coach Cutcliffe makes the change or Kevin White will be forced to act.

I really, really hope Coach Cutcliffe sees the light. The only caveat I'll throw out on the table is bowl eligibility. If Duke beats Army and somehow manages to win one of two against GT and Wake to finish at 6-6, I believe the status quo will be given new life.

I'm assuming we'll be underdogs in each of those games. I had two of them penciled in as wins at the beginning of the season.
