Thanks to those who have expressed their thoughts and concerns for Mason over the last few days here and elsewhere. They are much appreciated.

Mason first joined the family 7 years ago. After the passing of Eva, I eventually adopted Audrey. After some complaints from the older cats and some prodding, I decided to follow the sage advice to adopt another kitten to go along with her. Mason came from a hoarding situation in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area where he was one of 28 cats. He didn’t challenge the older cats and being bigger and stronger at the time, presented quite the challenge to Audrey. While the two weren’t greatest of buddies when they reached adulthood, they still got along well. They also shared the same love, tuna fish.

3 years ago after a terrible bout of sneezing, a runny nose and various steroids and antibiotics we came to the conclusion that Mason had one of a few things going on. A foreign body in his nasal passages, a fungal infection, or chronic sinusitis. There are solutions to the first two but no cure for the latter. The internal medicine specialist prepared me for the likelihood that Mason would not have a long life. After the latest flare up which did not respond to the treatments that earlier minimized the symptoms, Mason ended up in the ER struggling to breathe Sunday morning. At that point, the risky decision to do a CT scan and rhinoscopy to answer the question of which of the root causes was driving his health issues was made. For the last three years I've done my best to make him as comfortable and healthy as possible. Over the last couple of days while he was at the hospital, I realized what all that exactly was. Today, the procedure was performed and the initial indications did point to chronic sinusitis. Unfortunately, while taking Mason off the air tube and anesthesia, he stopped breathing. They reintubated and resumed anesthesia and his breathing resumed. After a while, they halted the anesthesia and he was breathing with the tube. As he awakened he started wanting to chew on the tube, the sign that it needed to come out. After several minutes of breathing on his own, his breath became labored again and ultimately, his heart stopped. After an extended period of time, they were able to resuscitate him and using the tube get him to breathe. At that point he was unresponsive and all body movements were reflexive.

At 5 PM this evening, with more than a few tears, I said my last goodbyes and Mason passed. I will miss his constant kneading on me, his announcement as he would enter a room, his insatiable love for tuna fish and most of all his curling up next to my knee to sleep. Because of the timing, whenever I hear Taps, I will remember those who served our country and are no longer with us, but I will also remember my little Mason. I will always love you, Woogie. I also miss how he used to sit on my keyboard to get my attention wanting belly rubs. As I type this from my computer I miss hearing his snores after he laid down on the stack of papers next to my computer. He loved sleeping on paper.

For what it is worth, we haven't had any rain since Hurricane Harvey. We did get a sprinkle last night.
