Do the reporters still talk into those little masks where nobody can hear them? They fascinate me. You can be sitting right there and not hear a sound. Or do they just tape everything these days? Never understood why not.

The high court judge court reporter records and runs the sound through a program where the words are (mostly) downloaded into written form. In low court in Henry County, where it is rare to have a court reporter for a run of the mill case, the court reporters have a little thing that looks like an adding machine and "type" into that and get something that looks like ticker tape that makes sense to them.

She recorded it all on a tiny recorder. But, she also spoke into the stenomask and made a recording of her own voice. And, she took notes. But here's the interesting part: the court reporter's words were going into a program connected to one of the other attorney's computers, and he was hearing her typed words read back to him through one earbud. It's helpful to him to hear the words read back to him because he is BLIND. He is taking notes on his computer, too. He is the smartest and sharpest attorney I think I've encountered in 30 years!

As I understand it, she makes two recordings so when she's making a transcript, she can check her verbatim tape in case she has trouble deciphering the real recording. And that's why she takes notes, too, to spell words.

My cousin is a court reporter here in our judicial district. She usually sits with the resident Superior Court judge and records his proceedings. She uses the mask and the tiny recorder, too. It's a neat job.

It sure is. But a tough one. I can't imagine sitting there all day doing that.
