Yes, captmojo, you are correct. Forgot to say Somerville, MA in my post about the Bumpas bridge. I think it's only one 's' but I'll check the next time I drive over it.

What do the locals call it? I've lived here for 15 years and I call it "the freeway."Bostondevil wrote:I. L. "Buck" Dean Highway. Quick, where is it? And what do the locals call it?

I guess if I called it the Durham Freeway that's like asking for an English muffin in England. ;-)Bostondevil wrote:Either "The Freeway" or "The Durham Freeway".

I've never ordered an English muffin in England. Do they really have what we call English muffins?

Re: LTE 2.0
When it first opened in 1974 or 75, we thought it was I-40, because it started at 15-501 and connected to 40 in the RTP and ended at the Raleigh Beltline as Wade Avenue (now the Wade Avenue Extension). This section of I-40 went no where else but between Raleigh and Durham, and we wondered why there was that grass strip that seemed to go off straight to nowhere where 40 turned right to head to Durham. It was a decade or more before I-40 began to take shape.TillyGalore wrote:I always call it the Durham Freeway.DukeUsul wrote:I guess if I called it the Durham Freeway that's like asking for an English muffin in England. ;-)Bostondevil wrote:Either "The Freeway" or "The Durham Freeway".

Yes, they had them at the cafeteria when I was in England. Except they just call them muffins.TillyGalore wrote:I always call it the Durham Freeway.DukeUsul wrote:I guess if I called it the Durham Freeway that's like asking for an English muffin in England. ;-)Bostondevil wrote:Either "The Freeway" or "The Durham Freeway".

I guess I never call it the Durham Freeway since we're in Durham and there's just one freeway.

It's called the Durham Freeway by the locals because it's the freeway that takes you TO Durham, says the South Durham County Girl.

Speaking of funny names like Bumpas, my wife grew up in the Shenandoah Valley. Two brothers in her high school class had the last name Fender. They named them Rusty Ford and Dusty Dodge, so yes, their names were Rusty Ford Fender and Dusty Dodge Fender. Those were their REAL names, as in, on their birth certificates.
One of my favorites is the guy who the story from the movie "Walking Tall" was based on. His real name: Bufford T. Pusser.

Re: LTE 2.0
With a destination of Burlington,if one vehicle exits off I40 westbound, onto the freeway and the other doesn't, they will meet together where I85 and I40 do at Efland. This is true only if both agree to drive at the posted speed limits, both ways.
I've witnessed this.

Groucho Marx once had a contestant on his quiz show named Safety Furst. His parents were German immigrants.bjornolf wrote:Speaking of funny names like Bumpas, my wife grew up in the Shenandoah Valley. Two brothers in her high school class had the last name Fender. I thought they should have given him the name, "Last" and "Name" for his middle.
Last Name Furst

Just to PW for a moment, I think I may have mentioned before...
I have a friend, I grew up with, with the last name of "Case".
He named his first-born son, Justin.

I have a fraternity brother whose last name is Heyman, pronounced "High men". He signed his bulletin board pledge picture Buster Heyman. And a new name was born. His mother couldn't believe everyone called him Buster - she about had a cow that first parents' weekend visit. But to this day, he's still called Buster. At least by us.wilson wrote:My brother had a fraternity brother by the name of Robert Aycock.DukeUsul wrote:My mother used to work with a Richard Hare.

Re: LTE 2.0
I had an acquaintance at Duke whose name last name was Fag. He was in ROTC. Think of the unfortunate combos his rank and last name would make if he made a career in the military: major, general, captain, private, corporal.

In my class at Duke (1993) there was a girl whose surname was "DeCock." Her unfortunate first name was "Edith."
One wonders what her parents were thinking.
I did not know her personally; but thankfully it appears that she has married and changed her last name. (Yes - I used to check the alumni guide every year.)
