Booze Hounds

Post by Miles » August 4th, 2009, 5:53 pm

Okay, so discussions of booze have taken over EJ's Moderator thread, and we've already got the best beer thread in the world, so I'm starting a thread to celebrate (or mourn depending on what you did last night) alcohol. List your exploits, stories, words of caution or wisdom here.

My advice: Do not take shots of Everclear. You know something is bad when you chase it with Colt 45 and the Colt 45 tastes like Kool-Aid.

OK, I'll bite. Here's mine. Remember that old saying:

"Liquor after beer? Never fear. Beer after whiskey? Very risky."

True or false? Discuss.

My aunt was a bartender and told me the cure to a hangover is to take two aspirin and drink a glass of chocolate milk. Can't remember why chocolate milk. I haven't tried it as she waited until my college days, aka major drinking days, were long over.

Never celebrate your 21st birthday with people you don't know. They don't care about you and will keep throwing alcohol at you even after it's way too much.

Or: Liquor before beer, have no fear. Beer before liquor, never sicker.

And yes, it is true.

Irn Bru, a Scottish pop, is a hangover cure. The stuff made in Scotland contains a drug that is used to fight malaria. That and a huge caffeine content are what does the trick.

I heard it as "Beer before wine, feeling fine. Beer before liquor, never sicker."

And from personal experience at a tender age, scotch w/nachos=no-no. Very young was I....

The only time I drank bourbon was after quite a bit of beer. I learned I shouldn't drink bourbon after beer. Several times... The last time was the night Leon Spinks beat Mohammad Ali. I think that was in 1978.

My dad told me about drinking milk with 2 aspirin before going to bed before I went to college. Worked pretty well for me!

Do not ever drink Absinthe and Tequila together - either as a shot or as a cocktail. Just trust me on this one...

I always heard the rhyme "Liquor before beer, never fear. Beer before liquor, never been sicker." My mother swears it's the exact opposite. In college, we kept with the former and seemed to barf pretty regularly anyway. Nowadays, I know I'm going to probably feel like shit eventually (either tonight or--much worse--in the morning) if I do any kind of mixing of the various alcoholic beverage types.
Maybe we should merge this thread with Ben63's solicitation for college advice. ;)

I don't buy into the liquor before beer theories. In my opinion, it's just a matter of over consumption.

I've never heard about aspirin and chocolate milk, and quite frankly THAT does make me queasy. I'll just stick to a few glasses of water interspersed with cocktails and try to avoid gratuitous shot-taking throughout the night.

If one must continue drinking, it's best, as the evening goes on, to drink weaker and weaker drinks as your liver is falling further and further behind in processing the alcohol - the average person metabolizes about a drink an hour. Accordingly, the correct phrase is "Liquor before beer, never fear; Beer before liquor, never sicker" which is how I learned it.

It's not strictly accurate, though, as it implies that it's the order of the drinks, not the quantity that's important. If you're having X number of drinks in a night, it doesn't matter which ones you have first. As long as you monitor your intake and limit yourself to the amount of alcohol you can stand, you can drink those drinks in whatever order you care to drink them in - it won't make any difference.

So why is it a good rule of thumb? Alcohol suppresses your inhibitions, so as you get drunker, the more likely you'll lose count of your drinks and/or drink more. But Beer is more filling and as a general rule contains less alcohol than liquor drinks. Accordingly, you'll tend to get less alcohol in your system (and hydrate better) by sticking to beer after you are already drunk, because you'll start feeling full and it takes longer to get the booze into your system.

Too true. Since I, for one, refuse to be responsible about my alcohol consumption I really do not want to read anything about alcohol consumption that makes sense.
