BostonDevil has gotten herself in trouble

Post by Bostondevil » January 22nd, 2015, 2:33 pm

I waded into a discussion of football over there. I knew I shouldn't have. I sat there typing post after post telling myself to quit and just let it go. But I didn't. And somebody just went off on me accusing me of being a UNC grad.

I had to come here and feel the love. And to apologize. I've already apologized over there and it earned me accusations of being a TarHeel.

Does moonpie post here? I hope not. Because he's an asshole. (I'm assuming it's a guy. I might be wrong.) There, I fell better. I may have been one too, but I never called anybody a UNC grad. I did say that the general tone of horror and outrage over deflategate reminded me of a bunch of Kentucky fans crying about Laettner. But I never accused anybody of being a Kentucky fan. I like to think I know when I've crossed the line.

The basic gist of my argument. In a year when I have come to despise most things NFL, deflategate ought to be the least of anybody's worries. I'm pissed at the controversy and pissed at the Patriots for drawing attention away from more serious problems but it's far from the worst scandal ever in sports, please. I've made a lot of people mad by having that attitude.

No moonpies here...no cowpies iether :poo: :)

Calling someone a UNC Grad is pretty low. Only thing worse is word that sounds like what you do on 4th down....

I find the level of outrage over things like deflategatge is directly related to how invested someone is in the parties involved. If the Cheaters were accused of using deflated balls during there trouncing of us in November I am pretty sure I would be a little more wadded up. I lot more wadded up. I real don't give two craps about the Patriots. I do get a little miffed with 'well they would have won anyway' logic - that to me says 'cheating is fine, as long as it doesn't really impact the outcome'.
I do wish some of the other transgressions around football got the same airplay.

And honestly, I really can't watch much college football anymore, as per many of the things you stated in an earlier post. And by the way... we in Kentucky LOVE BostonDevil!!!

I was okay with what you said over yonder. Air pressure in footballs was the least of indy's eors that night and to believe that was the only "cheating" going on is naive.

We are all friends here, and have the ability to have rational discussions even when we respectfully dissent one from another. :ymhug:

That being said, I echo Ymo's post. And I sent you sporks too. Anyone accused of being a unc grad deserves help from their friends.

I think I've posted OY twice in the last 5 years. I just can't stand pretentious outrage that is provoked by innocuous comments.

Thanks for the support, crazies! (And the sporks.)

Also, thank you to Bill Belichick for today's press conference. I know it won't put the issue completely to rest for everyone, but, it did for me. Pats didn't cheat! On to Arizona!

GO PATS!!!

(The one team in the Super Bowl with no domestic abusers or accused rapists on their current roster! I'd be rooting for them even if I didn't live in Boston!)

So you're saying that Belichick pulled out the Lance Armstrong defense today.. or was it the Sergeant Schultz defense?

Actually, as a science nerd, I believe his explanation was plausible. It's all about the Ideal Gas Law. PV=nRT. Footballs aired up inside, them taken outside. i always liked to think of it as gas molecules huddling closer together in an effort to stay warm. :D

Great. So they should have known about the Ideal Gas Law before submitting the footballs. They were still illegal footballs, I gather. Fine the Pats already, and move onto Week 2 of the Super Bowl Media frenzy... when we can get back to pablum interviews, clichés, etc...

I just can't get into following the NFL.

Actually, it's more than that. The Patriots are completely allowed by NFL rules to do whatever they want to the footballs. Belichick explained that it's not about pressure for Brady, but texture. They put the balls through their normal game day procedure, then, when they were at the point that they would normally turn them over to the officials, they measured the psi. After doing what they do, the ball came in at 1psi higher than when they started. Bellichick did not say what they start at. I assume it's in the range. BUT - according to NFL rules - they are at that point allowed to ask the officials to set them at their preferred pressure within the range which for the Patriots is 12.5, the bottom of the allowable range. Still within the rules. The officials then have control of the balls. As my hubby the physics professor said, "If the officials let any air out of those balls, it would make a big difference."

And it would. The best analogy I've come up with is, imagine shaking up a Coke can just before you ask someone to measure the internal pressure. Then ask them to let enough air out to reach a certain level of pressure. Letting air out of a fizzy Coke makes the pressure drop much faster. More of the agitated contents escape and the pressure of what's left inside drops faster. But that is all legal. The Patriots shouldn't even be fined. It was an NFL mistake.

Comparing the Patriots' footballs to the Colts' footballs makes no sense, by the way. Once you let teams prepare their footballs the way their QBs like them, they are no longer comparable sets of balls. Second part of the analogy - the Patriots' footballs were fizzy Cokes and the Colts' footballs were probably more like flat ginger ale. The fizzy Coke will lose pressure faster than the flat ginger ale every time. Even if the Colts' balls were slightly fizzy, they were not treated the same and the rate of deflation would be different, every time. There is an underlying rate of deflation, btw. We don't know what it is, but there is one.

Finally, Sunday, according to some reports I've read, was the first time the NFL has ever measured football air pressure at halftime. One data point. This level of deflation could be very common. We have no way of knowing until we collect more data. It also might be highly variable. We don't know. One data point. One data point in a discussion like this one is absolutely useless.
