Cheater School Update

Post by CameronBornAndBred » October 22nd, 2014, 1:13 pm

The latest report on academic fraud at the University of North Carolina could result in the loss of employment for some university faculty members, sources close to the investigation told WRAL Wednesday.
Of course no mention of any loss of scholarships, eligibility, or athletic department jobs. It's all the fault of those damn teachers! Sigh.

3100 students involved in these classes, of which approximately 48% were athletes.

But of course there isn't any collusion to keep athletes eligible.... :9f:

Stevo kills me. He is immersed in the anemic blue koolaid. Although he finally acknowledged what happened and that it was wrong, he still believes Dadgum Deputy Dawg Roy knew nothing. His excuse is that it stopped in 2005 and Roy had only been there since 2003. I call bullshit. There is no Roy didn't know. After reading the timeline in the N&O article, I have no idea where Stevo gets the "it ended in 2005" idea. Absurd.

I just read about this in the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Holy #$%^@%$#^!!
The quote that sticks out is: "One revelation in Wednesday's report is that far more people were involved in the fraud than was previously known." As for Roy:

I really don't see how the NCAA can ignore this report. If they do, several schools should pitch a fit. The most notable one, IMHO, is UConn. As much as I'm not a fan of the 'Victs, they were suspended from postseason play for poor academic progress. Given the lengths that UNC went to in order to maintain player eligibility, a lack of punishment sends the message that UNC's bogus major route is more acceptable than UConn's legit academics route. At the very least, UNC should be forced to vacate any championships gained through the use of otherwise ineligible players. They should also get at least a one-year ban on postseason play.

This only takes the academic fraud issue into account. If one takes the illegal benefits (i.e. rental cars) issue into account, is UNC in line for even harsher penalties?

Okay, NCAA, you're up. Let's see you step up and do the right thing. And I don't mean imposing penalties on Cleveland State. :9f:

I wonder what the percentage of the overall student population at Carolina is. Think it's 48%? ;) CSU better have some good lawyers.

CNN has an article about it too. They say it went on until 2011, and that Butch Davis admitted knowing there were "easy classes". Article also says a lot of non-revenue athletes benefitted too, and there was a huge uptick in "Olympic" event athletes attending UNC during that period.

I think it's too early to know what sort of consequences will follow and who will determine them. Based on what this investigation has turned up, there's plenty to deal with. ;;)

Gail King's son graduated from Duke in '09. I'm guessing she was trying to be diplomatic :)

The national press is on this in a very harsh tone. I'm enjoying reading all the stories...there are a countless number condemning UNC's systematic betrayal of the system to achieve athletic success at the expense of academics. There are too many voices for the NCAA to not take a significant action. We all worry they will turn a deaf ear; I don't see it this time.
