We will be wearing the Blue/White/Blue uniform Saturday night in Miami. This is a good looking combination and really makes that Duke blue pop!
In 2013 we were 2-1 while wearing this specific uniform set. Wins on the road against Virginia and Wake Forest, and the loss coming to Texas A&M in the Chick-fil-a Bowl.

That was hard to watch...but unfortunately not completely unexpected. A truly disgusting offensive performance, from the play calling down to the actual plays. Boone was way off, Skura was a nightmare. I blame ESPN for jynxing them both with profile stories this week.
I find it hard to blame the defense for much. There were breakdowns, but we knew Johnson was going to put up numbers. I was impressed by the number of stops we made once we got into the game a bit. They would have meant a win if the offense had followed up.
ONE FUCKING THIRD DOWN CONVERSION!!!!!!!!! THAT IS BULLSHIT!!!!!!!! (And no 4th downs)
Arrrrgh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boone's inaccuracy is difficult to stomach. We need to get Sirk healthy during bye week so the 2-QB system is available at Georgia Tech. I'm not going off the deep end and advocating benching Boone after one loss but I am saying Sirk needs to play more snaps so we can see him throw the ball. He has to be more accurate than Boone.

Last year the defense gave up 30 to a Duke Johnson-less Miami team. Twenty-two wasn't unreasonable.
TEN. Ten was so unreasonable as to be putrid.

I think we actually had 2/15 3rd downs if my beer-hazed memory is correct as I'm pretty sure I saw that wretched stat sometime in the 4th quarter. Your points are well taken, though. That was about as wretched an *ffensive showing as I've seen out of a Cut coached team. Yea, VT last year was pretty bad with Boone's 4 INT, but we won that one as Martin saved our asses with two 50+ yard FG. Bob posted OY that Cash cramped up on the 4th and 19 TD pass on which he got beat. He played a great game otherwise. And one of our other DBs basically quit on his coverage (yes, the replay showed him effing jogging) for their 47 yard TD pass that put it away.CameronBornAndBred wrote:That was hard to watch...but unfortunately not completely unexpected. Re: Duke vs Miami (7:30PM Kickoff, ESPN2)
This was awful to watch. This was by far, the worst offensive performance by this team since 2012.
Our defense played GREAT. Holding Miami to only 16 points until very late in the game was a truly awesome performance. Jeremy Cash played like the NFL player he will be. Our defense gave Boone and company multiple possessions to take the lead with a score and our quarterback looked terrible. I did expect us to lose, but I figured if our defense played well we would win.
If our offense does not improve in the Georgia Tech game, we will lose again. We all need to remember that Anthony did not play very well during our 8 game winning streak last year. He was benched multiple times during that streak and Connette played more snaps. I guess we'll see in 2 weeks..

I think the Miami game is the first defining point for the season. The defense performed better than many thought possible. Miami showed us the weaknesses in the offense and provided a reminder of how fragile confidence is. The season isn't lost. I look forward to seeing what sort of changes the coaching staff comes up with and how the players respond.

The game was very hard to watch after the 1st quarter.
The Kicking game was great!!! Defense did better than I expected. The Offense.......... failed to show.
Next Play !!!
Time for a good Open Week and regroup and recover.

Re: Duke vs Miami (7:30PM Kickoff, ESPN2)
I went back and looked at the 2013 stats and we had 3 bad games on offense then, GT, VT and F$U. GT basically destroyed us as we gained 254 total yards and they gained 469. I'm still amazed we beat VT at their joint last year as they outgained us 387-198. F$U was no contest after the first quarter, as expected, and they outgained us, 569-239. So, I am rather surprised/shocked/disappointed at the countless mistakes we made on Saturday, especially after rolling them last year and with them playing poorly on the defensive side against Nebraska just a week before our game. I kept hoping Boone would right the ship and Cut and Scottie would run the ball more but neither happened, even when we were only down 2 and later by 9. Our D gave us just about every chance (except for 2 bad plays by our secondary) they could to capitalize and we failed repeatedly, especially on our dreadful 3rd down performance.wolfpackdevil wrote:This was awful to watch. I know Cut is an offensive genius, but I was a little confused by a couple of quotes in his post-game press conference Saturday night. He said, "we put ourselves in position to win the game in the fourth quarter until we made a few mistakes defensively."
Yes, you read that correctly.
The mistakes made by this team were on offense. Period. Special teams was excellent, the defense was outstanding. If you remember, Miami's second touchdown was right after an Isaac Blakeney fumble that gave Miami the ball at the 25 yard line.
I'm not trying to be too hard on this one loss, but that was not the same Blue Devil team we have been use to seeing under David Cutcliffe.

That's interesting to read. Thanks for finding. I agree with you about the (many) offensive errors, both on the field and on the sidelines/from the booth. Yea, we had some problems tackling at times and gave up the 4th and 19 TD pass when Cash apparently cramped up and the 47 yard bomb when Fields (or Borders?) jogged while covering their WR allowing him to get 5 yards or more behind coverage . Monday punted for a 49+ yard average, our KO coverage was very good and they missed a PAT and FG, all from our outstanding special teams play. The D held them to about 2/13 on 3rd downs and had 2 picks.wolfpackdevil wrote:I know Cut is an offensive genius, but I was a little confused by a couple of quotes in his post-game press conference Saturday night. Besides Cash's play, the highlight of the game was Burnsesq's comments to Loran in chat. It was way too early in the game for the over the top negative commentary. And I was starting to worry about loran's blood pressure.

Re: Duke vs Miami (7:30PM Kickoff, ESPN2)
He was specifically talking about a blown coverage on the 47 yard TD. Per his comments in his Sunday telephone call, our DBs did not communicate so they were not on the same page. However, I agree with you the offense lost the game. Coach Cutcliffe stated, "Offensively, we can play better across the board." The turnovers were the difference. As you pointed out, the short field helped Miami immensely.wolfpackdevil wrote:I know Cut is an offensive genius, but I was a little confused by a couple of quotes in his post-game press conference Saturday night. On top of having a strained muscle, Thomas Sirk was sick with a virus. He will be ready to go against Georgia Tech and we need him to play significant snaps. If Boone has another bad night, Sirk needs to be inserted into the line up like Connette was last season.

That's really good stuff, Bob. Thanks for finding and sharing. Makes more sense now to hear about blown coverage on that play instead of one of our DBs jogging his way down the field. This makes me think the deep zone coverage never showed up which is why the Miami receiver was wide open .Bob Green wrote:He was specifically talking about a blown coverage on the 47 yard TD.
