My client this afternoon showed me a cell phone picture of her little girl in her Halloween costume. "Look! She's Snow White!"

And there was her little girl, just as brown as she could be, in a Disney Snow White costume. She was precious.

I'm trying not to overthink this thing, but I did think about it a lot this afternoon.

My next selection for THE BOOK:

The bearded lady in the Juvenile Court hallway asked, "Hey, aren't you a Commonwealth?" as I walked by. Even though I am not as big as a Commonwealth, I stopped to talk to her.

She was in court on a custody review and wanted to know her chances of getting full custody today. (Answer: I don't know. I'm a Commonwealth. You need a Social Services.)

She then informed me that she was unable to work because "he" had pushed her and the "cartridges" in her knees were damaged. :9f:

If you are a Commonwealth, do you get to wear one of those hats with the feathers in it, or do you get to wear a powdered wig?

I have one client who suffers from schizophrenia, paranoia and dementia. He was on a roll recently and kept calling me to rant and rave about everything. He told me, "The doctor says I have Demetrious, but I know exactly what is going on. I don't have any Demetrious."

Then on Sunday, I saw one of my clients at church. She was telling me about her brother-in-law who suffers from "dimension."

(I think she has a touch of Demetrious, too.)

I talked to a barrister for the Crown from Toronto at a conference once. She said they still wore black robes to court, and she thought it was great because she never had to decide what to wear. :9f:

I mentioned this in Section 21 tonight, so let me mention here as well.

The new elected Commonwealth's Attorney for Martinsville (the city of Martinsville, although surrounded by Henry County, is a separate jurisdiction with its own governmental structure) has offered me the job as his Chief Deputy. It would certainly be a promotion over my job with Jethro, but at this point I don't know what the money is going to be. The last Chief Deputy (who left due to family issues, not because of the election) made significantly less than what I make now. If it's a big drop in salary, I will turn it down.

Anyway, vibes that I make the right decision. Things have been way more pleasant with Jethro than I thought, but this is a sweet offer (if the money is right) and the new guy is well thought of. The case load is markedly less, which means I could actually talk to victims before court and be way more proactive than I have time to be at present, and I wouldn't be making less money than the midget down the hall who flouts orders at every turn. :9f:

Congrats on the offer, it is always nice to have options. You should ask if the position comes with tickets or not. :)

Happy Veterans' Day and a special thank you to all our veterans today. My dad is a vet of the Vietnam conflict and I have a great respect for all our veterans who work to defend us every day.

On a related note, my son said to him yesterday, "Hey, Pop-pop, you're a pop-pop AND a Colonel, so I guess that makes you popcorn. Get it? POPCORN KERNEL?" Pop-pop cracked up laughing.

Bjornolf, you can never go wrong with the classics.

Cub Scouts / Boy Scouts sell popcorn every year as their primary fundraiser. The adult volunteer who coordinates the effort for each troop is also known as "The Popcorn Colonel." Other than scoutmaster, it's probably the most thankless parent job there is. Needless to say, I have dodged that bit of duty...

P.S. And thanks to your dad...

Another chapter of the "you can't make this stuff up" saga:

I am going to Martinsville to fill in for their lame duck CA on Friday, so they can shut down their office for a funeral. (Today, eleven years ago TO THE DAY, I got the call from Mom that I had to come home IMMEDIATELY. This office called that office to try to get someone to cover, and they said they "might have a meeting" so they couldn't fill in for me. I may have forgiven, but I never forget. Part-time Cliff, who was in Franklin County at the time, juggled his office schedule to cover for me instead. I don't forget him, either, but in a different way. Thanks to Cliff, I made it home to see Dad while he still knew I was there, about 3 hours before he was gone.)

Anyway, I have agreed to do the five misdemeanor appeal cases set in the morning. Pretty typical stuff, a driving charge, a fail to appear, some good behavior violations, and an assault and battery. Facts on the assault are as follows: Female defendant is mad at female victim over a man. He is CLEARLY a fine catch, because they are debating which of them he will reside with when he gets out of jail on his drug distribution convictions. Defendant tells victim's sister, "Hold my baby, cuz we gonna fight." Sister refuses. I think defendant put the baby down. Defendant then commits an act of unlawful touching (ie, assault and battery) when she runs over to victim and hits victim in the face with her "titi's". :9f:
