I think it's funny that he makes a big deal of it (giving it its own thread even?) yet supported the pithforks over the post count idea.

Yup. If anyone else had posted a "look at how many posts I have" comment/thread, it woulda disappeared in minutes.

What happens to your title when you hit 12,000 posts?

I think nothing happens. The titles change at every 2500 posts after 7500, IIRC. So, I anticipate a change at 12,500, which, at my recent posting rates, will be months away .
