Player to Watch:
Senior Devin Street (73 receptions for 975 yards) will make anywhere from 25 to 100 grabs in 2012. The latter is a possibility: Street's an All-ACC receiver playing with a big-time quarterback, so a hugely productive final campaign is very much in the cards. The lower end is also a possibility: Street is the only receiver on this roster of any consequence whatsoever, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see the senior double-teamed on every play, come rain or shine.
Devin Street meet Ross Cockrell.

I will enjoy beating them, and watching the pundits once again talk about "Duke's surprising season". That's the one nice side effect of winning, we have more "surprising seasons" than other teams. Grrrrrrr.

Keeley addresses her comments in this write up in the N&O.
It's come to my attention that a further explanation of my comments on the running game might be helpful to some. I took the time to give a more detailed explanation in the preview I wrote for Sam, but, seeing as I'm on furlough next week, I'll post said explanation here.

Basically, my theory on Duke's running game is this: until proven otherwise, I’m not expecting a whole lot out of this group.

Now put down the pitchforks and read.

I'll stand by my thoughts before.

Pundits and media have a reason to rank us last. Other teams may have issues, but they have something going for them too. When we lost Thad Lewis, I didn't think we'd miss a beat...but we did. I could be wrong, but if I'm not mistaken, we're losing the most highly touted QB we've had in 40-50 years. He was really good. We are losing a player that didn't come in with tons of stars, but left breaking college records of NFL stars.

In basketball, If Clemson gets to the sweet sixteen of the NCAA tournament on the strength of an incredible point guard and he leaves for the NBA. Even if they've still got a shot blocker down low and a lights out shooting guard, it's reasonable to say...but can they really consistently beat top ACC b-ball programs? You'd go down the list and say, where are those wins going to come from.

Still, I drink the kool aid. I think we're better. I think in any individual game, we could've had a better chance of winning if we ran the ball more. I also don't think coach is stupid. I think he understood that he didn't have the depth to do it the whole year and that we'd probably struggle against top teams with tons of defensive line talent. Plus, he had some great tools in the passing game. He's talked all along about liking a 3 star guy in his 5th year as a redshirt senior a lot better than his 1st year out highschool. To get the full value in the 5th year, those guys had to be healthy getting there.

Regarding VA....yeah, Bob, you're right...they've got issues. QB is critical and they're lost at sea for the moment, but I'm a big proponent of good coaching. We got 4 wins with Coach Cut's first year. That was pure coaching. With Tom O'Brien and 2-3star QBs and 1-4 star QB, they'll be okay. Yeah, they'll make some errors, but with several 4 star DL and a few 4&5 star linebackers, their defense should keep them in some games. Plus, their strength on offense is with their WRs. To me it's always about the differential. Their QBs won't be great, but will they be much worse than what they had last year. The pieces around them are better and the coaching got an upgrade.

I'm just saying, I understand the media picking them ahead of us. I'm enjoying this off season following a bowl game. There's some lively discussion on here that's great. Still, I'm looking forward to the season too. Of note, the pundit I put the most stock in (Phil Steele), doesn't officially rank us dead last and has us tied with Va and Pitt. That's very positive as he's got a good record of being right more than most!

#72: Wake Forest

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nc ... w/2459897/

Their offensive line will be the turning point for the season as Coach Grobe intends to return to a run oriented offense. The line was hurt/inconsistent last year and spring training didn't change much so the outlook is unknown.

Nothing good to report...another defensive tackle prospect (Deshaywn Middleton) committed to NCSU.

The Midshipmen return a solid sophomore QB, three starters on the offensive line and seven starters on defense. The major loss is leading rusher Gee Gee Greene. Navy will be a tough opponent on October 12 in Wallace Wade.

Good for whichever panel at VT decided this thug shouldn't be at their university. The facts are BAD. He got involved in a fight between his girlfriend and ex-girlfriend, and broke the nose of one young lady and the cheekbone of her cousin. The restitution amount ($13,000 plus) only covers medical expenses and lost wages, no pain and suffering, etc.

The sheep should take some notes. :9f:

NCSU: #53

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nc ... w/2516925/

The Wolfpack are ranked 33 positions higher than Duke. I do not believe it so I remain convinced NCSU is a team Duke will beat on November 9.

So looking forward to that game, I hate that we have to wait so long for the next one.

Excellent article, I really agree with this statement:
Gut-check time: Sept. 14-21 (Georgia Tech, Pitt). The Blue Devils open the season with what should be two easy games against NC Central and Memphis, and then have to face Coastal Division opponents Georgia Tech and Pitt in back-to-back weekends. We should know a lot more about what type of season Duke will have after these two games. Consider last season, Duke did not play its first ACC opponent until Week 5 and came out with a win over Wake Forest. If Duke wants to get back to a bowl game, I think it is going to have to win at least one of these games.
We need to go at least 1-1 in those two games. If we go 2-0, look out!!! If we go 0-2, look out (negative connotation)!!! I do not want to think about having to play Troy on September 28 after losing two straight Coastal Division games as team morale will be at an all time low.

This year is going to be similar to last in that we must win the games we are suppose to win starting with the four non-conference opponents. In conference, it is time for the team to step up and win.

Here is a look at Duke and the eight teams which comprise the 2013 ACC schedule:

But I'm not vouching for the author as I heard he is a shady character.

Good stuff, I like the mini-season idea. You are right about the author though...dude can barely put two sentences together! :duke:
