Had a meeting with The Boss today to discuss my one-year evaluation. The meeting went even better than I thought it would. Basically, I can keep on my current course. This is a good thing; I'm learning lots of useful new skills. I'll hit The Boss up for lab space, etc. when the time is right. It's all about knowing when to play your cards.windsor wrote:People generally do not change.ArkieDukie wrote:Well, if I have learned anything within the last couple of days, I have learned that I was correct in not contacting Old Boss about a job. I sent him an email to ask his opinion about something I'm working on; it's an analysis he does quite frequently. We'll say that I asked a question on a 12th grade level, just for the sake of argument. His reply was at about the 5th grade level. Dude still doesn't think I know anything at all. I'm not sure he will ever realize that I have a brain.
I am wondering if could speak informally to current boss regarding what your job was supposed to be and what it is...in a non confrontational kind of way....

This sounds like an interesting appliance. Would love to learn more. Love me some hard boiled eggs.windsor wrote:One of my co-workers has chickens. He has been supplying me with fresh eggs. As long as I keep bringing him egg cartons he'll keep me in free eggs.
They are awesome.
Mr. Windsor loves hard boiled eggs. We bought what I thought was the most stupid small kitchen appliance ever - an egg cooker (serioulsy....a pan, water...who the hell needs a cooker to make hard boiled eggs)
Boy was I wrong. That little thing rocks. Perfect eggs, every time, and pretty darn quick.

Thanks for the link, Ima! This looks like an intriguing book. I'm going to see if it's available in ebook format. If so, it will be my next book purchase. Will report back to the group.Ima Facultiwyfe wrote:

I hope this link works. This guy from The Wharton School (youngest tenured there) has written an interesting book on "getting ahead" by whatever means and whether or not nice guys always finish last. He was on the Diane Rehm Show a couple of days ago. Verrrry interesting stuff for you guys out there dealing with back biters, etc.

I once decided that I needed to remove the wax from my kitchen floor. I'd thought that my floor covering was yellow. Turns out, the previous owner had waxed the white floor so much, it had a yellow sheen.
Anywho, I called around to find out how to remove the wax. This one gentleman told me, "First you need to put some 'Skripper' on the floor. It will loosen up the wax, and then you can scrape it off."
I went to the Home Depot and asked them if they had any 'Skripper' because I thought that was the name of the product.
The very nice man at the Home Depot pointed me to shelf which contained gallons of wax STRIPPER. I am such a

Since DD is paying, the Rev Lawgrad would certainly offer his services for a small fee.

Hey, you've got the makings of a choir, too - CathyCA, DinK, and myself. Anyone else? (In the interest of having a somewhat balanced group, I'm alto and not very strong. Re: LTE 2.0
I need to come up with an outfit for my 25 year college reunion party next weekend. The party is being held at an art gallery that's owned by one of my classmates. What should I wear? Dress? Nice slacks? I purchased a cute spring green dress with medium-size white polka dots, and I bought a white crocheted shrug to wear over it. I was going for not too dressy. Would this work, or do I need to try again? Paging CathyCA, personal shopper at large...

If the reunion party is during the day, the green dress and shrug will work well.ArkieDukie wrote:I need to come up with an outfit for my 25 year college reunion party next weekend. If it is at night, wear black and lots of bling.
Solid colors work best for pictures. So do three-quarter length sleeves, unless you have Michelle Obama arms.
When you pose for pictures, place your feet in a modified third position and turn one shoulder toward the camera. NEVER look straight on into the camera (unless want your photograph to look like a mug shot). Spend some time in front of the mirror to figure out which side of your face (and body) is your best side. Look slightly above the camera lens. Lift your chin and tilt your head to reduce the appearance of turkey neck. Thrust your tongue against the back of your top teeth to minimize shadows if you have any spaces between your teeth. Think of your favorite person and SMILE.
Wear comfortable shoes. I say this, even though every inch of heel visually subtracts 5 pounds. I'm going to wear 6-inch heels to my next reunion. LOL
Also, get a spray tan before you go. My girlfriends laugh at me, but I tell them that "tan fat looks better than pale fat." Do not go to a tanning bed, or you will end up like me with a dermatologist and plastic surgeon on your payroll.
Get some whitening strips for your teeth. White teeth make you look younger.
Most of all, have fun with your friends!

AD: I am in for the choir. I sing alto most of the time but can cover any part but bass in a pinch.

Here's the best advice I can give you: spend some time looking at the pics the Duke Alumni Association posted on FB this morning. You will notice that most everyone in those photographs could have benefited from my advice.CathyCA wrote:If the reunion party is during the day, the green dress and shrug will work well.ArkieDukie wrote:I need to come up with an outfit for my 25 year college reunion party next weekend. After looking at those photographs, I have decided that I will be wearing a v-neck top to all of my reunion events next year.
I will also get my roots touched up and my eyebrows waxed about four days before the event.
Go to the Class of '83 photographs and take a look at President Brodhead's pose. He knows how to pose for a picture.
