When I called her, she talked for 40 minutes, mostly about her cleaning lady and church. When she talks about things other than how bad she feels, she is doing better.

Fiesta here in San Antonio starts in couple weeks and runs for 10 days. I've been invited to a local pre-Fiesta event with some of the organizers and a roast for a local politician who is retiring. Never been this close to the inside of a real get together with the local movers and shakers any where I've lived.

I've been at my current job for just over a year now and am starting to re-evaluate whether or not this is the right place for me. The work with Road Runner and MacGyver is good (and with one other collaborator). Otherwise, not so much. The work that The Boss wants me to do is not something I'm interested in at all, if I'm completely honest with myself. The work I like doing is the type of projects that The Boss is steering toward Wile E. Coyote. I don't have direct access to an instrument for the type of work I want to do. The only people in my department with suitable instruments are Road Runner (whose instrument is completely busy) and Wile E. Coyote. WEC has 2 instruments, one of which is completely unsuitable for the type of work I want to do. I raised major objections with The Boss over the purchase of this instrument, and WEC somehow managed to convince him that it was a reasonable purchase. Road Runner's work is great as well, and I like working with her, but she has made it clear that BarMinion is her person, and her top priority is keeping BarMinion happy - which would explain why I'm listed behind BarMinion on a paper for which I actually did most of the work. BarMinion does not like me or anyone else she feels threatened by, and she tends to make trouble for them (exhibit A: the "hostile workplace" claim). I have a great idea for a project with Road Runner, but I'd have to work with BarMinion as well. My concern is that BarMinion will do as she has done with other things and completely take over to the point of edging me out completely. To say that I trust BarMinion about as far as I can throw her is an understatement of epic proportions. I also don't have lab space, although The Boss once offered me space in Wile E. Coyote's lab. Given the fact that WEC has been caught rummaging through Road Runner's and MacGyver's supplies, I don't particularly like that option.

I have a sneaking suspicion that PHB would hire me back. He has made a couple of comments to me about not having anyone who can do the work that I did. I believe the ball is in my court, and he would come up with a position if I asked. Recall that my condo hasn't sold yet, so I would still have a place to live. I think I would have a greater chance of doing the type of work I like with PHB, but there's the issue of past history. We got along fairly well before he went completely nutso, and go nutso he did. History has shown that, even if he does make promises, he will backtrack at the drop of a hat. Recall that I had my job responsibilities changed and didn't find out for a couple of months - and I didn't find out from him. As with lawgrad's PHB, he seems to make decisions based upon political expediency. I think I'm in a pretty good negotiating position (I think PHB needs me and knows it, and I've picked up additional valuable skills since leaving). The question is, if I'm right, can I trust anything he says? And, the even bigger question: am I crazy for even thinking of starting negotiations with PHB?

My short answer is there is never any harm in testing the waters. Having said that, for me a BOSS I can not trust is a deal breaker. I suggest you go back and re-read your posts in the Interesting Dilemma thread. Memories are funny things.

I wonder if you could use the possibility of leaving to improve your standing where you are?

If you talk Ye Olde Boss I would use "love the job, Texas not so much...condo hasn't sold" angle. If he thinks you are happy in the JOB you are negotiating from a position of power.

I don't see any harm in looking into it. You are in a position of strength with Olde Boss at this point, so if you could get advancements IN WRITING, with the condo not selling, it might be worthwhile to return.

But do remember that leopards don't change their spots. If you couldn't trust Olde Boss before, can you really trust him now?

I remember the Interesting Dilemma thread quite well, and the contents of that thread are the reason I haven't contacted Old Boss up to this point. I do not trust Old Boss any farther than I can throw him, and I can throw BarMinion farther. Not sure I could even lift Old Boss. With that being said, I no longer really trust New Boss, either. Let's just say that he hasn't exactly come through with everything he promised in order to get me here. And, yes, I have thought about using negotiations with Old Boss to improve my standing here.

Thanks for the advice on negotiating with Old Boss. As always, you make an excellent point. I believe I can also throw in the new skills I have learned here (things he wouldn't let me do, by the way). They are skills that he needs at the moment. Another intriguing possibility would be to see if I can negotiate a way to maintain my collaboration with Road Runner - assuming she's interested. I can do the same work I'm doing with Road Runner in my old lab, and probably with more resources.

Thanks, lawgrad. The leopard's spots are the reason I haven't contacted him yet. Up to this point, whenever I've been tempted, all of the leopard's spots take over my field of vision. On the flip side, the leopard now knows I will walk. One wonders if that will change some of the attitude. The advice he gave me just before I left was that I should always make my boss think I'm ready to walk in order to get what I want. That's how he operates. In looking back, I believe that some of his actions toward me were motivated by his thinking that he could treat me like dirt and I wouldn't leave. Guess I proved him wrong on that point.
