This afternoon PHB called a meeting of the office and informed us that he had appointed young and arrogant as his chief deputy. The secretaries all cooed and smiled. MP, who was certain he was in line for the position, said nothing. Randy the Genius was in court. I said nothing. Afterward, I told PHB that he had made a horrible mistake, and for good measure I told him he had a terrible morale problem in the office. I told him that young and arrogant had a significant ego problem and it was just compounded exponentially.

I didn't want the job forever. I don't live in the Varnish Zone, and don't intend to move there. What I am pissed about is that PHB didn't have the balls to call me aside and talk to me about it personally. I've been there sixteen years, three months and three days, the longest tenure in the office. Randy the Genius really is a genius, and he had been head honcho in Martinsville City for 24 years before he lost the election. MP, for all his faults, has been a prosecutor for 20 years, albeit in 3 different jurisdictions, two and a half times longer than Mr. Arrogant.

Yet PHB didn't pick us, and not only that, he didn't have the balls to tell us personally, or even the three attorneys separately.

So, things are about to get interesting. I need three years, eight months and 28 more days to reach partial retirement. To get that retirement, I will not be able to work for an agency in Virginia. I live in North Carolina. The federal court system doesn't count, so any federal court job, I could do without messing that up. The countdown clock starts now....
OMG - PHB appointed the male version of Supervisor Barbie to be Chief Deputy. SB was promoted to a position above her level of competence/experience due to her innate ability to suck up. Colleagues recognized her for what she was. So, I think Ken needs to be part of his name. Chief Deputy Ken? Lawyer Ken?

I'm really sorry, lawgrad. This situation sucks out loud on so many levels that I cannot even begin to list them all. Can't wait to hear windsor's take.
Needed: A name for LG's saga. :D

Holy Crapola. PHB is a scum sucking bottom dweller...with no balls at all.
The only reason to NOT to tell the lawyers who have more experience/seniority than Jethro (on a count of he "grad-ge-ated" the sixth grade... Only took three years) is because PHB knew he was screwing them and did not have the stones to face them. His gamble was that in a public forum they wouldn't react. He was right.

That sucks long and hard. I will interested in hearing what Randy the Genius and MP have to say about all this.

I would be ice freakin' cold to Jethro and PHB..professional but ice freakin' cold. The time to reel out rope has begun.

so is PHB solely responsible for naming/hiring his replacement? Is there a formal process?

So begins the new series "As the Gavel Drops".....

MP is pissed beyond all recognition. Haven't talked to RTG yet.

Like the Jethro reference. I say we go with lawyer Jethro.

Since things haven't sucked enough already, Mom called at 7 am to let me know she would be in the hospital this evening, if her stomach issues didn't get under control. It would get me out of the office, at least. :9f:

Lawyer Jethro is at the Martinsville Speedway this morning with his volunteer fire department, of which he is captain. Smh.

Redirecting to the important stuff - :wizard: :wizard: for Mom!

Is PHB's job an elected position? Would Lawyer Jethro have to be elected? Can we use photoshop to see to it that that NEVER happens :D

Dear Lawgrad:

Crap.

Just crap.

I think that a countdown to retirement calendar would be AWESOME. You could get one of those little digital gizmos and put it in your signature line over here at CTN.

Signed,

CathyCA

PHB's former job is an elected position. If he has a second in command, that person is appointed interim until an election can be held. I assume the election would be in November. MP seems to think he would win in an election between himself and Jethro. I haven't heard of anyone else that might run, but it's certainly possible that another attorney would throw his/her hat in the ring. The best time to unseat an interim is in the interim's first election.

PHB's new job is appointed by the General Assembly. I think the terms are six years for lower court judge.

If PHB had taken me in his office (or come in my office) and said, "I am appointing Jethro to give him a chance to get his feet wet before the election," I would not be angry. Instead, I got the good news third-hand, from someone who doesn't live or work in the Varnish Zone, and then he didn't have the decency to tell me in private.

BTW, he did call to express concern over my mother (I left the entire office an email this morning, before I went to work) and wanted me to call to confirm that I had gotten his call. I have not done so. Haven't heard anything from Mom, so there's nothing to tell him. Well, I could tell him, "Fuck you, and the ass you rode in on," but I'm taking Windsor's advice. Icily professional and handing out rope.

According to calendar-365.com, there are 1367 days between now and January 1, 2017. Tick, tick, tick....

Thanks for all the Mom vibes. She said she is feeling a little better and is at home still.

When I called her, she talked for 40 minutes, mostly about her cleaning lady and church. When she talks about things other than how bad she feels, she is doing better. :9f:

LG - so glad Mama LG is feeling better and I hope it continues. Will keep healthy vibes going for her.
I will also send step-on-your-own-you-know-what vibes toward PHB and lawyer Jethro; sometimes idiots do all the work for you...
Here's hoping that 2017 gets here very quickly and then you'll need one of these

A little late to the game, but still sending vibes. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

This whole thing reminds me so much of several of my former jobs. Your PHB and my former PHB really has a whole lot in common. As you may recall, PHB sent out the big news about the lab promotions relating to the big cancer project while I was out of town, attending a professional conference that I had to pay my own way to attend. He passed over myself and Blustery, promoting NuBarbie instead. The one big difference is that your PHB is leaving after putting your NuBarbie equivalent (Lawyer Jethro) in charge. In our case, PHB delegated things that NuBarbie was too incompetent to do to Blustery and me. To me it felt as though he was using us to disguise NuBarbie's incompetence to the outside world. From secondhand accounts, Blustery was as unhappy about this as I was. Your PHB won't be around to use you, MP, and RTG to make Lawyer Jethro look competent. The question is, will Lawyer Jethro be able to make the three of you do things he doesn't know how to do (and then take credit himself), or will his ego lead him into thinking that he doesn't need your help? If it's the former, be sure to have plenty of wine on hand (and maybe a voodoo doll). If it's the latter, the next few months could prove to be entertaining. Or, in the brilliant words of windsor, start reeling out the rope. And it wouldn't hurt to have plenty of popcorn on hand. You could be in for an entertaining show. I really, really hope it's the latter. :9f:
