I can recall only one lecture in law school about the grand jury process, and that was more than half my life ago. (But I do know that grand juries don't reach verdicts.) Lawgrad likely appears before the grand jury several times a year.

One time I heard a prosecutor say, "Notre Bill was returned."

I thought, "Notre Bill? Is that like Notre Dame's little brother?"

Then I realized that she was saying "no TRUE bill."

Intimate Grand Jury knowledge is not required, knowing they do not reach verdicts is pretty basic if you are an attorney.
For those who have never had the pleasure –
Grand Juries are not adversarial. They are not about guilt or innocence, but in the simplest form “is there enough evidence here to pursue the case”. They had down indictments (aka ‘true bills’). Generally the case is presented to the GJ by an Assistant US Attorney (in the course of the year of service, one day a week, you get to know the A-USAs pretty well) Usually testimony is from federal agents (FBI, Secret Service, DEA, ICE). The Grand Jury deliberates and determines if the feds have proven the elements of whatever the crime(s) is (are). Truth be told it is almost always a rubber stamp.
The other things little miss legal eagle missed is that it was too soon for me to serve on a Petit Jury. Federal Grand Jury gives you a two year exemption so that you never server on a petit jury where you could have grand jury knowledge of the case. I would have said that, but I was having too much fun with her not knowing grand juries don't had down verdicts.
Another tidbit…Grand Jury service is exceptionally hard to get out of, and Federal judges have a short fuse for juror bullshit. Our judge excused 4 people out a of a pool of over 40.

In Virginia, regular grand juries usually only see the officer who's bringing cases and only see the prosecutor if they have a question about something. When we have special grand juries, they are secret squirrel shit, and most of the times PHB handles those and the rest of us only read about what's going on in the newspaper or hear it from the defense attorneys, who hear it from their clients. I've worked on a couple of those where PHB has prosecuted someone who's now a witness and he thinks they will clam up when they see him.

Grand juries are hand-picked, and the ones we have here often have a fairly extensive knowledge of the criminal process. (The clerks choose them, and they usually pick people that they know from church or who work at the bank or are retired probation officers or police officers.) As Windsor said, all they are supposed to determine is that there is probable cause that a crime was committed and the person charged committed said crime. Most of them realize that the more questions they ask, the longer they'll be stuck in a windowless room, so they don't ask a lot of questions.

Petit juries (the guilt or innocence people) are chosen through a more random process; voter rolls, DMV lists, etc., and they are supposed to have a reasonable cross-section of the community. When I was in intern in the Norfolk CA's office, the clerk's office decided to use the first three digits of Social Security numbers to get jury lists, and ended up with several jury panels composed entirely of Caucasians from Maine and Boston.

Notre Bill? =)) =)) =)) That sounds like a prospector in the 1840s. :9f:

I made it into the box today in a civil trial. The Plaintiff's attorney kept me, but the Defendant's attorney dismissed me. (I'd had a case involving one of her partners about a year and a half ago.)

Anyway, the Defendant's attorney asked one of the jurors, (and I shit you not. . .) "Was that a CIVIL grand jury or a criminal grand jury you served on?"

The judge lifted his head from his nap and shouted, "There is only one kind!"

I go back tomorrow to see if I get picked to serve in a criminal jury.

Good luck tomorrow.

I had a defense attorney show up at 4:15 to pick up discovery on a drug distribution case set at 9am tomorrow. He didn't even know what the case was about until I gave him my synopsis of the facts (which includes the phrase "the purchaser is an undercover State Police Special Agent.") :9f:
