Taking suggestions, ideas, solutions!
Native reports that the big blue-feathered Indian head dress he ordered to wear in Cameron came. It's spectacular. Problem is, the feathers are NOT dark enough blue. Not good .... not good at ALL. And could I darken them to the correct shade. (I can't decide if being his grandmother is keeping me young or making me old, bless his heart ) Naturally, I will rise to the challenge somehow. Any ideas good buddies?

Re: Taking suggestions, ideas, solutions!
yee gads that is a tall order. Coloring feathers is hard enough when the are not already on a headdress...
here is how to dye stand alone feathers:

I'll think on it, but it might be easier for Native to transfer to a school with a lighter shade of blue......

Re: Taking suggestions, ideas, solutions!
Well, I'm experienced in dying wool strips for my rug designs. I'm hoping that is beneficial. I'm thinking since the dyes will run if he gets caught in the rain, maybe paint would actually be a better solution. I know that Martha Stewart has a craft paint that can be used on any surface. I think I'll try watering it down and spray painting some feathers to see how that works. Then I have India ink in colors for my calligraphy. That's permanent. It might work.
That was a good site, Windsor. Gave me insight on how the feathers might react. Thanks.

You know, the folks who make the outfits/costumes for professional ballroom dancers have to add color to feathers and all sorts of materials. I'm not currently in contact with anyone who does that sort of design, but the local dance studios might offer some suggestions about who's knowledgeable. Also ask in stores that sell dance supplies for referrals for competition ensemble makers. I know the dance community is very knowledgeable about treatment of feathers!

Re: Taking suggestions, ideas, solutions!
Well, after several aborted attempts at dying or painting the errant turquoise feathers, I decided I had no choice but to pluck OUT each and every one. (There were lots more on the crown in the back where you can't see.) Then came the search for Duke Blue feathers to replace them. A.C. Moore and Michael's had boas and feathers. Armed with my glue gun, I began replacing feathers one by one and re-wrapping the blue "feather holders" with ribbon. It took three days in between the care and feeding of my hip patient. I finished at 1:30 AM. I think I still have blue feathers in my underwear and some of my fingers are permanently glued together.Devil in the Blue Dress wrote:I'm curious about how you did it..... the colors are excellent!Ima Facultiwyfe wrote:Idon't know if this should be on the good night thread, the middle of the night thread or the good morning thread or this thread. Now we wait to see whether or not it's allowed in Cameron. It's pretty big. We may have to tie some of it together so people behind him will be able to see.
No doubt about it looking spectacular, though.

That's an amazing job Ima, even more impressive that you had to replace each feather. Any chance it will debut at the football game?
